Bene ‘n’ hot

Post by ClaretCliff » Tue May 02, 2023 7:53 am

Just read this in US Magazine Sports Business Journal in an article about JJWatt’s investment -The heavily industrial, northern England city traditionally enjoys a drink of the French liquor Benedictine and hot water on match days, an example of the local color Watt wants to share with Americans.. Also seen it referenced in a tweet from Watt. Time to buy shares in Benedictine before it hits the American market!

Jack Daniel's, Southern Comfort, Benedictine.
Got a nice flow it, any cocktail creators on here?

In 1982 just 15% of the production of the liqueur was sold in France with 45% of the product going to the United States of America.[3] Benedictine is sold in over two hundred markets. The United Kingdom remains a significant market in Europe where much of the Bénédictine is consumed in the Burnley area of England.[citation needed] This is as a result of returning Great War soldiers of the East Lancashire Regiment acquiring a taste for the drink while stationed in France during the War. Traditionally people in East Lancashire drink Bénédictine with hot water, known as "Bene 'n' 'ot", and the Burnley Miners Club is reputedly the largest single customer.[4] The abbey at Fécamp was used for a convalescence hospital.[5]

I’ve never seen Benedictine for sale in any Duty Free shops. The reason I was told is, all the sellers of Cigarette's, Spirits or perfumes have to pay a fee for Duty Free shops to sell their products. Benedictine seemingly won’t pay it.

Bought a bottle of Benedictine at this liquor store in Nashville, TN : https://goo.gl/maps/Cza6jvNZV7HfD8uN9

I was rather gobsmacked to see it there - it was the only bottle and was extremely dusty!

There was a bottle behind the bar in the Holiday Inn in Reading. Next question - 'You don't have a kettle, do you?'

Brandy and Benedictine is reasonably known in parts of the US. Probably more so than in the UK.

I was at a fairly posh dinner in a London restaurant last week. I told the assembled throng about Bene n’hot and I’m delighted to say they all ordered it and (professed to have) enjoyed it.
Another example of the spread of Clarets Culture!

I was in a similar situation in Bayeux and I felt like the new messiah it was so well recieved. Now legendary dinner that also included an incredible goats cheese and black pudding soufle. It was even better than it sounds.

Bought a BnB...( Brandy & Benedictine) whilst visiting the Monastery a good few years ago, can't say I've seen it in the shops in the UK.

From a quick look online, it appears to be mixed fifty-fifty, so could be made at home.

Integral component of the original Singapore Sling. Also popular gift for women after they've given birth to help with the confinement period.

Yes, I was pretty surprised when a pregnant Chinese colleague was asking me where she could get a bottle of Benedictine from. Seems it is a "warming" food.

Just been on wiki and it says in the 1930s it could be bought bottled as Benedictine and Brandy.

Few drops Angostura bitters
Ice
50ml Pineapple juice
25ml Lime Juice
Topped up with sparkling water
Garnish (cocktail cherry...)

Isn’t it owned by Bacardi which is still a private family company?

Sadly the chances of JJ going all Ryan Reynolds are slim to none (the latter of course made more money from gin that he did from acting).

Maybe in terms of current practice, but that’s how the monks used to drink it rather than drinking it on its own.

They taste even better in the Long Bar at Raffles. However, the price of them sticks in the throat a bit. When he was 17, my late son had a night out in Singapore with some friends and I said I’d fund him. He ended up buying rounds of Slings, but it was £350+ well spent. I just wish I could do it again.
