I live in Thailand where driving isn’t for the faint hearted.
1) car and motorbikes being driven on the wrong side of the road
2) cars being driven round the wrong way on roundabouts

Over the past year, I’ve twice come very close to being hit as a pedestrian at different zebra crossings. In both cases, the drivers were very elderly. I had some sympathy for the first old fella who was extremely apologetic but less for the second one who had the nerve to honk his horn at me for having the temerity to be half way across a crossing having approached it at speed. He’d seen me but not the zebra crossing.
I’m getting on a bit myself but there are some older drivers who really shouldn’t be behind a wheel.

1) Drivers that are coming off M65 J10 from Nelson, in the left lane wanting to go anywhere other than down Westway. They either cut across the lanes on the bridge or even worse, stop at the non existing “junction”

2) Drivers who have obviously got their phone on their lap and are texting. Was behind a driver the other day on M65 who was “drifting” across lanes and at one point was half on the hard shoulder

There’s too many and I’d have 2 different ones tomorrow

Potholes: Some are getting so big they are more like tank traps. I had a very expensive experience with damage to a brake caliper caused by a pothole on the A41 just north of Wolverhampton.
Caravans and caravan drivers with underpowered vehicles: They have a right to be on the road but please have a vehicle capable of pulling the bloody thing. Perhaps we could allow them on the road on the 29th February between the hours of midnight and four in the morning.

Point one I fully agree with. I have to navigate that junction from the roundabout each morning and need to move over to the left hand lane to go down west way. The amount of times I have had to stop to allow a driver through before I can then move over is unbelievable. Also point 2 I’d extend this to texting at traffic lights. I’m frequently having to beep the driver in front to set off. I did it twice to the same driver one morning and he had the nerve to tell me where to go through the back window the 2nd time!

And how many times are these people Mums or Dads putting baby in the car from roadside?
Not much choice if you have two kids with car seats though.

Anyway:

1. Drivers on motorways who stick religiously to the must be on the left unless overtaking rather than looking ahead, realising that they will be overtaking that lorry shortly and staying in the same lane rather than pulling in and then veering back out again.

2. Ludicrously sized SUVs that don't fit in parking spots so drivers put them half on the pavement.

Interesting one. Signage coming up Westgate makes no indication of Westbound vs Eastbound lane, both lanes are labelled M65. Driver coming up there for the first time would assume they could use either lane. In fact, logically you’d assume the inside lane would be for the first 2 turns, down Burnham gate or Accy Road, and the outside lane for the right, and final, turn off the roundabout.
Good point!.........an awful lot of people on their daily commute assume everyone knows the road as they do....set off 5 mins earlier & most of the gripes on this thread will disappear.

1. My gripes are people trying to get on the freeway doing 35 mph & expecting to merge.

2.This maybe unique to the US......I used to get up very early to go to flea markets (on the road by 5am).
My route was 405 fwy to 10 fwy......405 has 6 lanes and there'd be one car in each lane doing the same speed...practically no-one else on the road but still blocking it. Free country &all that jazz.

1) Middle/3rd Lane hoggers
2) SUVs.
3) People who haven’t got the speed of thought required to be on the road.

Having said that, SUVs hogging the middle/3rd lane are likely to be driven by people without any recognisable thought process.

1. People who approach motorway down a slip road going at 40mph, hoping to enter lanes travelling at 70mph plus, and then get worried and slow fown even more!
2. Vehicles blasting down country lanes like they are one way streets and that they own them.

I have 2 kids seats and had to take one of them out on the road side on quite a busy road yesterday. No idea how I would have got my youngest out, and particularly back in safely from the pavement side. Methinks your wrath be misdirected.

I didn't say "Oh I'm not into rants". If you further re-read you will see that I wrote "I try not to get into driving rants".

I regret you did not and do not appreciate the just jesting context, but for your and anyone else's benefit who may have misconstrued my comment, let me be clear; not once, not ever have I even considered cyclists as targets. There have been times and they are rare, that I have thought behaviour by cyclists has been inconsiderate, or inadvertent, but I am all too aware of their exposed position and I drive accordingly.

I could, of course, point to my driving record of never having collided with, crashed into or similar, a cyclist; further this also applies to pedestrians, horses, stationery objects and all mechanised, steam and electric vehicles. I realise I've only being driving for a little over 50 years, so I'll not rest on my laurels but will still endeavour to maintain this standard.

Having moved up to Burnley from Bristol recently, one thing is consistent in both places...

1. Taxi drivers. There are two types - those who drive like they are driving in a lawless third world country without road markings or speed limits and those who drive like they are also trying to read an A3 sized 1996 AA road map and can irrationally stop, slow down or turn without indicators with the predictability of an average Championship matchday.

2. 50mph speed limits for 10+ miles because of roadworks that last longer than the average lifespan of a family dog.

1) Red light/zebra crossing jumpers. Gets on my wick as my mam is blind and would have no chance getting out of the way when she's crossing roads on her own.

2) People who swing out wide before taking a corner. You're driving a fiesta, not an articulated lorry you absolute pillock.

This might have already come up on the thread but a proper pet hate of mine is people who indicate at roundabouts, but can’t use them properly.

For example people who are taking the third exit at a roundabout will correctly flick the right indicator on. However rather than flicking this to the left at approach to the exit, or even turning it off they keep the right indicator on so it looks like they are continuing past the 3rd exit. :x :x

Holds up traffic at the next exit whilst you attempt to be a mind reader working out what the hell they’re going to do!

2. Drivers in queueing traffic blocking side roads.

Far too many to list but the main ones are

1. Lane hoggers.. these are just ignorant drivers who cause congestion.

2. PCP warriors… does no one seem to own their own car anymore and want to hook about in something you can’t afford.

I travel and work abroad a lot therefore drive abroad a lot and Central European drivers are so much better than the IL drivers. Driving through Germany/Poland etc is an absolute breeze and people understand lane discipline very well.

Probably helps that Germany has a minimum speed limit for each lane and about 5 times as many traffic police officers.

1. This seemingly new trend of ridiculously bright LED lights on oncoming vehicles, which end up blinding you as they approach (or blinding you in the rear view mirror if they're behind you).

2. Parking on double-yellows, especially next to a school. 'Oh, I'll only be 2 minutes' - doesn't matter, you're blocking the road and endangering the life of your, or others, children.

Car manufacturers have fitted automatic LED to the front of the vehicle without thinking about the rear and subsequently neither have the drivers of said vehicles when it raining heavily or foggy.

People who drive with their seat in a stupid position so their eyes just about clear the steering wheel. They normally wear a Baseball Cap and/or a Hoodie whilst driving.

1) Red light/zebra crossing jumpers. Gets on my wick as my mam is blind and would have no chance getting out of the way when she's crossing roads on her own.

2) People who swing out wide before taking a corner. You're driving a fiesta, not an articulated lorry you absolute pillock.
Number 2 grates me. They're usually in a small car anyway

It's not illegal far from it when there's a open stretch of road in front of you but when overtaking round bends or dead ground dips potentially putting the motorist you are overtaking in a sh1tshaped position double damn right lights will be flashed for the inconsiderate w@nkers, not implying you drive like that.
I'm relieved you're not implying that I drive like that.

1. Drivers parking on the wrong side of the road facing oncoming traffic, especially at night with their headlights on.
2. Drivers in queueing traffic blocking side roads.
Those are 2 of mine as well.

1. is made even worse by the retina burning headlight bulbs seemingly found on most newer vehicles these days.

I'll add...driver A waiting at a fairly wide junction to turn right from a side road onto a busy main road but positioning themselves right in the middle of said junction so driver B queuing behind them wanting to turn left can't get past until driver A has been able to turn right.

I do find it strange why other fellow motorists are flashing their lights at you whilst overtaking, it usually happens when the other motorist is doing it dangerously it's something I don't experience when overtaking.

1. folk driving in poor visibility without their lights on. just because you can see doesn't mean everyone can see you. it's especially dangerous when people do it in heavy rain on the motorway. knobs.

2. the bloody M62 and it's ongoing mission to continually disrupt me and thousands of others by never, ever, ever finishing their mysterious upgrades.
