Carrick is the most decorated but not really an enforcer.

Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
Butt was a top player, but had to play second fiddle to two of the best ever in Keane and Scholes. I remember that World Cup, but he never really played the same role United and they played so much on the front foot then.Darthlaw wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2024 6:31 amUnfortunately the closest we had aside Hargreaves was Nicky Butt of that generation who as I recall had one brilliant World Cup then fell into obscurity. Prior to that Ince and Batty but by the time our golden generation got into their prime they were way past it.
It’s amazing to look back though and see each great team’s destroyer
Keane for Man U
Makelele for Chelsea and Madrid
Deschamps for Juve and France
Kante for Chelsea and even Leicester
Gattuso for Italy and Milan
Vieira for Arsenal and Petit before him
Busquets for Barca and Spain.
Rodri for Man City
I’m probably missing loads more.

Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
Same issue for England I suppose. If Scholes (probably the best English player of that generation) couldn’t depose Lampard and Gerrard, it’s unlikely they’d find a formation to accommodate Butt.helmclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2024 8:26 amButt was a top player, but had to play second fiddle to two of the best ever in Keane and Scholes. I think Sven et al even pushed Hargreaves to the left or even as fullback to accommodate him?

Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
England had the personnel to absolutely crush a 4-4-2 diamond, or a wing back system - criminal that we shoe horned someone into left midfield instead.

-----Lampard
--Rooney--Owen

Could Beckham have been a full back in the modern day game, he's not too dissimilar to Trent but probably better defensively.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2024 11:23 amEngland had the personnel to absolutely crush a 4-4-2 diamond, or a wing back system - criminal that we shoe horned someone into left midfield instead.

I think they could have been a great side for a manager that bothered with the tactical side of the game in terms of patterns of play etc. Always fun to give theoretical teams so il go with this:
Beckham---Rio---Terry---Cole
---------Hargreaves--Carrick
Lennon----Scholes/Gerrard---J Cole
---------------Rooney

New episode out now! ANOTHER defeat but positive signs? It’s a strangely upbeat episode this week…

I enjoyed the Payton episode. Interesting contrast to the Duff one and the difference in the two eras of football not that far apart.

You’ve got to be positive at times, Dan. Take Ben Duckett for example. What a glorious innings and now looking set for a 150… perhaps even a double century. Listened to three debriefs and I was in agreement with the majority of comments. I wouldn't take an editorial line that some people feel we are negative so we need to balance or vice versa. Just call it as you see it. All debate that is sincere and well intentioned is of value and will find an audience.

If we all buy a T-Shirt, can you sort a decent microphone/computer for Chris Boden so it doesn’t sound like he’s nipping into another room halfway through every sentence?

It just sounds like a noise gate prematurely kicking in - could be on the mic or audio interface/recording software.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 7:29 pmyou get the impression he keeps leaning backwards wile speaking - he can completely disappear when he is speaking, quite annoying really

I think you’re right CoolClaret - I think it’s something on his audio interface that keeps kicking in. He’s on his last warning - any more sound issues and we’re giving him the same punishment as we gave Simon!

I did appreciate the delicious irony of within 2 minutes talking about ‘how much we’ll spunk on a league 1 GK‘, followed by talking about how Dan Burn is being bullied by his own fans at Newcastle.

Can't wait to hear how the Podders are going to keep the positivity going....
Love the show and they've been bang on but all of the sudden they descended into madness this week with someone (who shall remain nameless) even declaring that this is the week Arsenal will implode and Burnley's season will be transformed.
Knowledgeable Clarets they maybe but Nostradamus they ain't....!

I think there’s a mix of the two. There’s plenty of anger but also a weird sense of apathy towards what’s happening before our eyes.
I should add that we’ve tried to add a little bit of humour to lift the gloom - whether we succeed is not for me to say!

Tried to listen to another well know BFC post-game podcast first this morning, but turned it off when one of the panel admitted they hadn’t seen the game. I’m not an expert, but I reckon watching the game you’re on to talk about might be a prerequisite.

It's quite cathartic listening to this after such a crap performance, I find.
One slightly annoying thing, Chris Boden's microphone, or maybe he just keeps moving away from it. I noticed it on the last episode, he fades out and then back in randomly and you miss a lot of what he's saying. I thought it was my Bluetooth connection but it only does it when he's speaking.
