Culvert work starting

Just noticed that Yorkshire Street is being closed off for the refurbishment of the culvert.
I don't know if the "Sean Dyche way" signs were put up by someone on here but the chances are they will be removed and lost, maybe they could be removed and replaced after the works done?

The “Culvert” dates from 1796, but rebuilt over the years to cope with increasing traffic. Strictly speaking it’s an aqueduct, but perhaps it was named The Culvert as a joke, which stuck. Rather than water it allowed traffic to pass under the canal.

A road running under a canal is correctly called a culvert. Another example is the Medina Culvert that runs under the Erie Canal.

That's how I understand it.
The bit that carries the water over the top is the aquaduct.

I'm sure I once heard from a bloke who was told by a bloke who's great great great great etc grandad worked on the canal banking for the straight mile that a stream had to be diverted underground to flow into the Calder near what is now Tescos or the straight mile banking near Yorkshire st would have been scarified.
Same bloke also told me about the time Ole Gunnar Solskjær was spotted at Gawthorpe so it must be true.

Must have been a big job when it was widened. Probably had to drain the canal along the golden mile to do it. Fantastic engineering feat the golden mile, one of the canal wonders of the world.

Apparently they're diverting a drain under it so that it will finally be described in the correct terminology.

The sign on the old photo says “drive slowly through culvert”. This suggests that back then it was the road/tramway tunnel that was the culvert.

Full details above, and yes, they are cleaning the stonework and repainting the Ironwork on the " culvert " ... it's known as the " Straight mile ", not the " Golden Mile " ...
All sorts of arguments about whether it's the best use of £6.1m to be spent in Burnley, but it's from the Government's " Levelling up " fund so the Council had to bid for it, and I'd rather it be spent in Burnley than any where else. The same fund has given a £3.48m grant to update Colne Municipal Hall, Pendle Hippodrome and Colne's Little Theatre ...

On the odd summer night once upon a time it could have been known as the curry mile with some anglers ordering takeaways & munching on kebabs & other items to keep them sustained before darkness fell, you can easily collect takeaways or they'll even deliver to the canal with the carpark nearby.

Thanks. Really hope the repainting incorporates claret and blue.
I take your point on the spend. For me personally I’d have rather seen the money spent on removing the roundabout - which will presumably turn it in to a concrete and tarmac jungle - being spent refreshing and reinstating the shop fronts up that stretch to the turf.
You can have great public realm, street furniture and the like, but if the buildings are poorly maintained it’s not a good look.

It’s part of the Town2Turf project - to say it’s being cleaned up is probably understating it. It definitely isn’t being painted claret & blue.
Harry Potts Way is also closed for a few weeks from a week tomorrow (Harry Pots Way according to the signs. The pavement on the football ground side needs doing and they will be installing the automatic bollards in the road.
Project in total is 18 months which includes the removal of the Keirby roundabout with traffic lights being installed.

I wasn't aware that it was being painted - it is a mess now though and water leaking down, that's going to be repaired. The automatic bollards will be a huge improvement on the farcical thing we have now at either end of Harry Potts Way every match day. By the time they've got it in place, it's time to take it away again.
The roundabout does look strange with the trees gone, and I agree with you on that, but they will be more planted to compensate. The whole traffic light system is changing to incorporate those near Tesco, the new ones where the roundabout is and at the Wellington. They must have examined it enough to know it will improve the situation. What will improve is the fact that the horrible underpass across Centenary Way will be blocked off.

The section of the canal towpath from Healey Warf to the Mitre has been resurfaced with very loose gravel, there are signs instructing cyclists to dismount.
Very difficult for those with young children in pushchairs, I'd guess also very challenging for wheelchair users.
Which goes contrary to what the Council are implying.

Has that part of the upgrade started? I assumed that’s be last. Or is your point that it has and the surfacing isn’t ideal?

Very pleased to hear about new trees being planted. I’m a big tree fan!
Remain to be convinced on the traffic changes but will give credit where it’s due if they get it right. My main point is that changes to road systems are so expensive - I’d have just much preferred it spent refurbishing and upgrading the buildings along that stretch. That would’ve had a much greater impact on the area imo.

Regards the roundabout, anything must be better than the current situation. Absolutely grid-locked at times. It was probably ideal when initially constructed, but the sheer level of traffic that passes there must surely be 100 times greater. Not just match days, busy shopping times, school runs. There's been occasions when I have wanted to turn off at St. Peter's and had to miss the exit due to the nature of the traffic and not being able to bear left.

They can't spend money on buildings given they are privately owned.
