Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
My first ever visit to Turf Moor to watch Burnley was in August 1950 to watch Burnley play Blackpool. I remember it was a 0-0 draw and the ground was packed partly due to Stan Matthews playing for Blackpool. Does anybody have a copy of this 1950/51 Burnley v Blackpool programme for sale?

Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1050/51 match
0-0 it was in August 1950 with Burnley having won 2-1 at Bloomfield Road eight days earlier with two Billy Morris goals. Attendance at the Turf was 38,688.
I'm not sure you will find someone with a copy of the programme to sell, might be worth looking on Ebay.

We did get better attendances prior to the Norman Conquest, lost a lot of supporters in those battles (and against the Vikings as well)

I believe we lost to France in the 1066 world cup final but I don't think any Burnley players were in the squad.
Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1050/51 match
Twas a while back. We played in blue and white in those days of yore

Beat you by 10 days DesiC. 0-1 to Areholes another last minute winner by them. Think it went in off the crossbar
Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
My father worked in Retail always had to work on a Saturday, so I was limited to midweek night games for quite a few seasons.
Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
What was the capacity of Turf Moor in the 1950/51 season, somebody told me it was over 50,000?

Officially, maybe, but in reality nowhere close....ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 11:08 amIt was over 50,000. The last time there was over 50,000 at a game was in 1962 against Everton in the FA Cup.

Liverpool game, we were front of Longside near where all the snow had been piled up.

.......And somehow after extra-time, and an extraordinary goal Alex Elder, we still contrive to lose the game.

But here's the thing.....no matter what the record books might tell you....26th Jan.'63 is probably the the only time an attendance in excess of 56,000 has ever been seen on Turf Moor......in fact it was considerably more....as anyone on the CF end stand that day will attest to.

Where's the OP ?......Never understood this....Starts a topic then disappears.
Adamson, Cummings & Bray.
Sounds like Harry Potts (of all people) misses an easy chance in the last few minutes....Dad would be furious.
Mac just a few games away......then plays successive game forever.

Sometimes people post and don't come back. To be fair to the OP it was only this morning when they made the thread!

Hey Royboy I am still here, my main interest on this thread is my first Burnley game v Blackpool in August 1950 and in particular to try and get a copy of the programme so I could reminisce a little more and recreate my memories before I forget them forever. I have no problem at all with you taking my topic in a completely different direction as I enjoyed reading your memories of that Liverpool game.

Despite your fantasy world believing it was a record attendance at the Turf, let’s get back to reality and confirm the attendance was under 50,000. And the ground had four sides.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 2:51 pmBut here's the thing.....no matter what the record books might tell you....26th Jan.'63 is probably the the only time an attendance in excess of 56,000 has ever been seen on Turf Moor......in fact it was considerably more....as anyone on the CF end stand that day will attest to.

No worries DesiC......this late error from, of all people, Harry Potts, is giving Dad nightmares.
Mac was soon to assume the No.10 jersey for ever.

Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
I've got a programme for the 1947 match v Blackpool at Turf Moor. Same cover. Handed down from my to dad to my brother then to me. It's hanging together. Keep meaning to frame it.
Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
DesiC, I’m out of the Country for a couple of weeks and will have a look in my old programmes, for a copy of it, for you, on my return.

Thank you BFC much appreciated
Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
I checked on CT's results section from 62-63 season and assumed it was correct BUT there is a typo and the date should be Jan 26th but has it down as December 26th
I think the replay which was lost in the 120th minute, not unlike poor Barnsley, was Mac's last game for us
Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
Desi - the programme you need is currently being offered for sale on eBay. Starting bid of £3.99 & 1 bid received.DesiC wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 4:55 pmHey Royboy I am still here, my main interest on this thread is my first Burnley game v Blackpool in August 1950 and in particular to try and get a copy of the programme so I could reminisce a little more and recreate my memories before I forget them forever. Re: Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 match
Not surprised. I was at the Liverpool game in 1963 but mum wouldn't let me.go to the one v Everton the season before. It was in the middle of 'the big freeze' but a slight thaw enabled the game to go ahead. Think some sort of pellets were used on the pitch, too, to effect a thaw but I stand to be corrected on that one.
A lot of very noisy support from a buoyant Liverpool, just promoted to the First Division. Kevin Lewis put them ahead in the first half (just over 12 months later he missed a penalty for Huddersfield in a 3-0 5th round fa cup tie win for us. John Connelly equalised right after half time.
Surprised it took so long for the replay especially with Liverpool being next to the sea but suffice to say it was mind- numbingly cold and even the sea froze over in some parts. 1-1 and last minute of extra time and we had a goal kick. Ref ready to blow for full time but Adam kicked the ball straight at Ian St. John, who was then fouled by Adam as he tried to go around him. Penalty put away by Alf Moran and that was that.
Mc's last game for us, he was wearing the No 10 shirt but unlike Royboyclaret I always thought he made the No 8 shirt his own. When Andy Lochhead came.into the team replacing Jimmy Robson Andy wore 8 and Mc took up the No 10 shirt. What was definite was the end of an era led by the guile of Jimmy McIlroy.

I have it in my collection but will be watching with interest. Hope you win it.

Great news. I won the Ebay auction this evening, I ended having to pay £42 plus postage for the Burnley v Blackpool 1950/51 programme. I am sure even Jimmy McIlroy wasn’t being paid anywhere near £42 a week in the 1950/51 season.
