ARTICLE: A Noble signing as Clarets prepare for the top flight

Post by ClaretTony » Mon May 29, 2023 10:16 am

The plan was to cover the 1972/73 season during 2022/23 (50 years) but I brought it forward two years to provide some material during the pandemic. Now at 50 years, today the story continues with some transfer news.

Peter Noble was one of my favourite players as he could play anywhere he was required and also he could be taken off with a injury on a Tuesday and he back playing on a Saturday showing how he would play with a knock. Peter was also a very nice person and family man.

I think there are very few Clarets who were fortunate to watch Uwe who don't miss him dearly.

My first favourite player. Alway looked like he gave absolutely everything. Ever since i first saw him on the turf I have been a massive fan of desire and effort and hard work over talent and skill. Not saying he wasn’t talented and skilful mind - he was, just that he absolutely never stopped running and working hard for everyone.

Smashing fella too. Miss seeing him out and about…

Uve, pure quality.
So many of our players of that season were snapped up by 'bigger' clubs, I'm amazed nobody came in for Peter Noble.

So glad they didn't though.

They did. Bob Paisley twice tried to sign him for Liverpool.

That last line sums him up. Was so sad to see him suffering in his last years.

He was struggling with his arthritis for years, long before his illness.

I don't remember that, and surprised Bob Lord didn't cash in, he normally did.

Why do they have 4 teams promoted from the Division 2? It is definitely lopsided with 4 up and only 2 down.

The four up and down between the bottom two divisions came in I think when they disbanded Division Three North & South leagues.

He was that good he would have been a top Premier league player today, loved just seeing him on his market stall as well.

A real human dynamo who always appeared to give his all. Great penalty taker too.
Can't recall which paper this pic is from, one of my favorite Burnley goals by Uwe in a 4-1 demolition of Newcastle.

Proper player who always looked to be putting a full shift in every game. A striker of some quality who could play in midfield but became a full back.

A great player unfortunately I witnessed his strike playing against us for Swindon in the league Cup semi
But saw his debut in our rare win at Bramhall Lane replacing Mick Docherty
A tremendous player and I feel privileged to have seen him in a Burnley shirt.

I only caught the back end of his time with Burnley, but like many he was one of my favourites from a young age. I always used to marvel at being served by one of my heroes running a market stall (don't think i ever managed the double of getting a bus from Nelson to Burnley driven by Billy Ingham then shopping at Noble Sports). I used to buy football boots, trainers and more often subbuteo teams from his stall. Used to annoy my mum that it would take half an hour to buy a team, 2 minutes to decide which side i wanted and pay for it, 28 minutes listening to Uwe talk about his time as a footballer. Really was a genuine nice bloke and he had a daughter who was a year or two below me at Walton High in Nelson. One of the saddest days when Uwe passed away. Top player, top bloke.

He was an amazing player for Burnley. The goals he scored, the tackles he made, the brave diving headers to score or block opposition strikes. Even held the record of 28 successive successful penalty kicks at one stage.

Notwithstanding all the above qualities imagine the influence he must’ve had on his teammates especially in tough games where others might not have been in the mood. Seeing his efforts and commitment must’ve won us countless points over the years.

Great that he stayed in the town after retiring from football and just reading the notes above shows how he took time to chat and do business with countless local shoppers and sports fans.

He used to have to put up with chatting to me occasionally on a Saturday evening at Churchills bar which was popular back in the early 1990’s. 😩

It was indeed a sad day when he passed. RIP Peter.

The word “committed” could well have been invented as a description of Peter Noble. Whole hearted…dedicated and an inspiration to other players. Loved watching him!
