29 May 1997: Death of Jeff Buckley

Post by ecc » Mon May 29, 2023 12:21 pm

26 years ago today Jeff Buckley died.

Whilst he never really knew his father as his mother remarried, they shared a great deal in common. Jeff Buckley said he only met his biological father once when aged eight.

I never realised until reading someone's comments on YT but the lyrics of Tim Buckley's beautiful "Song to the Siren" can be interpreted as being rather prescient. Even though Buckley didn't write the lyrics (they were the work of Larry Beckett) it's still somewhat unsettling.

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle

And you sang:
"Sail to me
Sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you"

Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks

For you sing:
"Touch me not
Touch me not
Come back tomorrow
O my heart
O my heart
Shies from the sorrow"
You might also like
I am puzzled as the oyster
I am troubled as the tide:
Should I stand amid your breakers?
Should I lie with death, my bride?

Hear me sing:
"Swim to me
Swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you"

Furthermore, this song was covered by This Mortal Coil. Elizabeth Fraser went on to to be the lover of...Jeff Buckley.

They recorded an unreleased song which is equally beautiful.

Song to the siren is a beautiful song. Elizabeth Fraser made a pretty good version of it in her This Mortal Coil days.

Sorry ecc didn't read the whole of your post specifically the reference to Elizabeth Fraser and TMC. It's an age thing!
