And no matter how today ends, Barnsley will be without Adam Phillips for the first three games next season.

Can they appeal it? Doubt they would win though due to VAR agreeing.

There is literally no point going through it as there are too many claret tinted spectacles for anyone to have a respectable and grown up conversation about it.

In short, both decisions were not clear and obvious so we’re not overturned.

They were both very clear and very obvious, the VAR should have suggested the ref takes another look.

I love it when someone knows they are wrong so they use an even further nonsensical argument to further their argument ^^^^^^^^^

Both decisions were wrong, VAR overturns both of them in the PL

On the field that red is completely understandable. Philips came in very late and very forcefully and the Wednesday player's reaction made it more difficult to judge.

I have sympathy with VAR even if I think it should be a yellow card myself. Is it a clear and obvious error? It's grey. The threshold is so difficult to apply those marginal calls are almost impossible to be consistent on. Shame that was shown up in a play-off final.

The decision needs to be a clear and obvious error, not just an opinion. For example, the red card for me was harsh but the decision was given as the tackle was mistimed, out of control and reckless. At that point, if the referee gives a red, it’s not a clear and obvious error as it’s a justifiable decision. Same for the penalty. I would expect the decision not to be overturned on either of the red had given a yellow and awarded a penalty.

Fans too quickly misunderstand VAR as if it’s changing every decision they disagree with. The bar is a lot higher than that fortunately/unfortunately.

How it is used is up for rightful criticism, not the technology itself imo.

Agreed, his acting didn't help but the ref took that long to send Phillips off that the Wednesday lad had got up and had a chat with him. Obviously wasn't hurt. Should have booked them both and got on with it.

I don't necessarily agree Tony. Clear and obvious is a very high bar. Phillips foot was well off the ground and there was force. Contact may have been minimal but I don't think it's as clear cut as is being suggested. It's a really tough one for VAR. A very good example of why it doesn't remove controversy.

So basically do away with var then. As refs make decisions based on what they see or believe so therefore there is no clear and obvious error.. as they wouldnt have given the decision in the first place. So your argument is that the ref is infallible regarding any decision he makes . In both instances with the benefit of slowed down replays they were clearly errors…. But not enough to overturn the ref… total nonsense brought about by Var

It’s why you see VAR really only overturn offsides and very poor decisions. VAR is something that could be used so much better but unfortunately it isn’t.

The distinction between reckless and dangerous/excessive force is a subjective one; an opinion. On that basis, how can there ever be a clear and obvious error? And, yet, there is precedent for such on-field decisions being overturned.
