Championship 23/24

Post by depechedingle » Mon May 29, 2023 6:34 pm

Some big clubs in there now, with the three down from the Premier League and the promotion of Ipswich and now Sheffield Wednesday.

I know, we won't be in the Championship next season it should be interesting though.

Further, despite Vincent saying we might have gone up a season or two earlier than expected. I think, it now looks an excellent time to get promoted.

I won't miss that entrance into the away end at Leeds though 😉

Clinton Morrison was happy to say that Sheffield Wednesday will be fine in the Championship given their home form at Hillsboro. The three promoted clubs Plymouth, Ipswich and Wednesday lost only 4 home matches between them all season with Plymouth winning 20 at Home Park.

It’s going to be a very tough season. Wouldn’t shock me to see all three relegated teams come back up. Has that happened before?

"Leicester's total borrowings stand at £344m, but much of that is related to the owners, who wrote off £194m earlier this season" The main issue they face is a loan agreed with Australian bank Macquarie for advanced payments on player amortisation and broadcasting revenue.

That is set against TV money so it is quite feasible the club will not see any of the 'parachute payments' as they will be allocated towards paying the quarterly interest on the loan, which stood at £19m last year.- BBC

It has never happened before (in the Premier League era), closest was in the 06/07 season, Birmingham, West Brom and Sunderland had been relegated the year before, Birmingham and Sunderland went straight back up and West Brom lost the play off final to Derby.

From the first Premier League season:

92/93 - Palace, Middlesbrough and Forest relegated (The following season Palace & Forest promoted).
93/94 - Sheffield United, Oldham and Swindon relegated (The following season none promoted).
94/95 - Crystal Palace, Norwich, Leicester and Ipswich relegated. (The following season Leicester promoted).
95/96 - Man City, QPR and Bolton relegated (The following season Bolton promoted).
96/97 - Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Nottm Forest relegated (The following season Nottm Forest and Middlesbrough promoted).
97/98 - Barnsley, Bolton and Crystal Palace relegated (The following season none promoted).
98/99 - Charlton, Blackburn and Nottm Forest relegated (The following season none promoted).
99/00 - Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday and Watford relegated (The following season none promoted).
00/01 - Man City, Coventry and Bradford relegated (The following season Man City promoted).
01/02 - Ipswich, Derby and Leicester relegated (The following season Leicester promoted).
02/03 - Sunderland, West Ham and West Brom relegated (The following season West Brom promoted).
03/04 - Wolves, Leicester and Leeds relegated (The following season none promoted).
04/05 - Norwich, Crystal Palace and Southampton relegated (The following season none promoted).
05/06 - Birmingham, West Brom and Sunderland relegated (The following season Sunderland and Birmingham promoted). *
06/07 - Sheffield United, Charlton and Watford relegated (The following season none promoted).
07/08 - Reading, Birmingham and Derby relegated (The following season Birmingham promoted).
08/09 - Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Brom relegated (The following season Newcastle and West Brom promoted).
09/10 - Burnley, Hull and Portsmouth relegated (The following season none promoted).
10/11 - Birmingham, Blackpool and West Ham relegated (The following season West Ham promoted).
11/12 - Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves relegated (The following season none promoted).
12/13 - Wigan, Reading and QPR relegated (The following season QPR promoted).
13/14 - Reading, Fulham and Cardiff relegated (The following season none promoted).
14/15 - Hull, Burnley and QPR relegated (The following season Burnley and Hull promoted).
15/16 - Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa relegated (The following season Newcastle promoted).
16/17 - Hull, Middlesbrough and Sunderland relegated (The following season none promoted).
17/18 - Swansea, Stoke and West Brom relegated (The following season none promoted).
18/19 - Cardiff, Fulham and Huddersfield relegated (The following season Fulham promoted).
19/20 - Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich relegated (The following season Watford and Norwich promoted).
20/21 - Fulham, West Brom and Sheff Utd relegated (The following season Fulham promoted).
21/22 - Burnley, Watford and Norwich relegated (The following season Burnley promoted).

Think Leicester & Leeds could struggle. Both don't have a manager confirmed for next season. Players will leave from both clubs and whoever comes in won't have the contacts VK has.
Southampton are my bet to be promoted along with Middlesbrough.

I quite fancy Ipswich to go up after the obvious 3.

Bookies have cottoned on to them though with the owner saying they have money to spend.

Of course it all depends on transfers, manager appointments etc but I think it will be a wide open Championship next year.

Middlesbrough for me would be favourites, and I wouldn't back against Ipswich or Sheff Wed achieving double promotions. Dark horses could be Birmingham if their takeover is completed.

only have to go back to 2017/2018 when no relegated side were promoted straight back to the Premier League. 🙄

West Brom currently 14/1 for relegation next season with Bet365, very good price.

Way too early to say because of what the relegated clubs will do, recruitment and managerial appointments. As it stands I’m quite keen on Southampton and Boro. I also think Ipswich will spend and do quite well.

Another vote for Ipswich

Their difficulty was getting out of League One

Good manager - 25k plus for every home game. Their playing style is similar to ours and they have a decent
budget. They will also attract good quality loans

It's almost like a Premier league 2 with the size of some of the clubs down there, as an earlier posted said we got out at the right time. Even small clubs like bstards who are massively subsidised to the equivalent of parachute payments every year won't get a sniff.

I think Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday will really struggle

Sheff Wed look completely abject of any real quality - they might get a few quid to spend but they have a hell of a lot of dross in their ranks.

Plymouth done good but already lost a striker to Blackburn and are unlikely to add much extra quality.

Turning into PL 2 is the Championship; our achievement this season really cannot be understated

Ipswich gave us a couple of hard games in the cup. A couple of additions, and the confidence bounce, and they will challenge next season.
A lot of vagaries for the relegated clubs, but I also think Saints are best suited for the battle.

Southampton although criticised for the lack of players signed with premier league experience this season have a really exciting looking squad for the long term.

I have a friend who is a Southampton fan and he thinks quite the opposite of that.

Also only rarely do relegated teams keep the same squad together for the following season.

Leeds owe over £100 million on transfers according to Kevin Maguire, which isn't a good start

Sheff Weds have an old squad that will need upgrading

Agree on Ipswich, seem to be on the way up

Think Southampton will do well, and I can't see Leicester not sorting themselves out

be very tough for the clubs without a sugar daddy or premier league money

I should have mentioned that bit, as its v funny

They probably will need some sort of fire sale, and I'm not sure they will get the money back they paid on certain players

If Southampton keep Tella, Adams and Armstrong then they have three players you’d expect to get 15-20 each in that division. That’s before you possibly includes the likes of Onuachu, Sulemana and Alcaraz.

They’ll probably sell Ward-Prowse, Walker-Peters and Lavia and likely get around £80-100m for those alone so will have plenty to spend too. It’s very hard to see past them in my opinion as I rate Martin.

Everyone is saying how big the league is next season due to the size of clubs in there. How many of them have money? Size of club means nothing unless they can get decent players in, which takes time if you have nowt.

Rovers and Leeds could both get promoted but they could also crash and burn. Let’s hope it is the latter
I think Ipswich Saints and Leicester will be too 6

I honestly think the horse fiddlers will struggle next season, and PNE too. Could depend on any decent loan signings they may get. Gonna be a tough tough league next season.

I seem to be in a minority, but I think Southampton will struggle next season ... didn't show a lot of fight this season, and with their likely departing players being in double figures, I just don't see it ...

If I had to make a guess, I'd go Leeds, Middlesbrough & Sunderland/Stoke .... As for t'Rovers, Venkys have said that the transfer budget will depend very much on outgoing sales, and I can't see anyone there, apart from Adam Wharton, who'd attract a fee of any significance.

Plenty of positives for Ipswich on this thread but none for Norwich who were the bookie’s favourite last time around. Sounds as though our Ashley is in for a season of toil. At least he’ll be getting well fed.

On paper Norwich had a great squad, on the pitch they were really light weight. We weren't the only team that rolled into Carrow Rd and picked up an easy 3 pts.
Ash will definitely give them some bite and aggression, and Wagner has enough nous to turn them round.
I can see them being in the mix next season, but it's a big mix, which is what will make it so exciting

Proper manager in place now (or set to be in place...) and even though they'll lose a few big names like Ward-Prowse etc, there's still a nucleus of a very strong Championship squad. Lots of pace. I doubt the departures will be in double figures. I actually think Leeds may struggle more - they don't appear to have a coherent strategy and quite a few players there who will either depart or, for me, won't hack it in the Championship. Stoke are a good dark horse bet - looks like they're about to sign Daniel Johnson from PNE whose a very handy player at that level and they've underachieved generally. Think they'll spend some money and have a decent manager who knows how to get promotion.
