JJ’s cap designs

Just seen this. Looks like JJ is getting his own caps designed, probably because our designs are so poor/unimaginative, but loved this one with No Nay Never on it.

What a legend.

Really hope some of his designs are actually sold in store next season, they’re miles better than what we have now.

Would be better if the lettering was the right way round 😉

True. Probably got it made in China!

Anyone got a hat with the other badge? I've got a bee in my bonnet about this but I find it weird that the badge we stopped using in 2009 (apparently for just one season) is nowhere to be seen in the club shop, other than the Score Draw replicas and I think a pair of swimming shorts. It's possible to get stuff with the other badge, from the 70s, so why not the other one? Anyway if anyone has one I'd perhaps be interested in buying it, can't find one on Depop, eBay or Vinted.

As for JJ's hats. They're decent enough yeah. Anyone can personalise a New Era hat, it can just get a bit spenny.

In what way are JJ's hats better than those in the shop?
I've had a few down the years and they've all been fine.

Just generally massively more modern designs, in my opinion.

JJ’s do away with the garish technicolour badge (I like our badge but it stands out like a sore thumb on a cap), and he goes for monochrome badges as per above.

He’s done that blue, a claret one with claret badge, an off white with a claret badge, then a black on black. All look far superior - design wise - than anything I’ve seen in the club shop. Again, to my tastes.

Kompany’s cap is pretty good, no surprise whatsoever he chose that one as it’s one of the more understated designs, else there’s not much selection.

An obvious one would be an 1882 cap for example. Buy as Pickles says, we’ve had so many badges we could have loads of great designs.

He’s earned huge sums in the NFL. His last two year contract was worth at least £20m to him. That’s before any sponsorship deals.

I reckon he could have his own live-in baseball cap maker.

They can't trademark the old badge as it's the towns coat of arms (i think).

Most clubs have new badges for trademark reasons.

The one we stopped using in 2009? That's not the coat of arms. Is it? I've got a bee in my bonnet about the current badge and I bore myself with it sometimes.

It certainly is unusual. Our team wear needs an overhaul.

I don’t think so, unless the intention is to build some interest in these designs & release them next season but no word on it :(

Why is "modern" (which means, so far as I know, the same as "fashionable") necessary? Some people do the same thing with kitchens and bathrooms - rip out a perfectly adequate kitchen to replace it with a more "modern" one. And then ten years down the line, they want to do it again. A cooker is a cooker, a cupboard is a cupboard, it doesn't stop working because it's 40 years old. (Well, a cooker might, but ours hasn't yet. Fingers crossed smiley needed.)

Same with a club badge. Modernity is temporary, class is permanent. A good badge never needs changing unless it's with a view to ripping off the fans for new kit.

The BFC crest uses elements seen in the Burnley County Borough Council Crest, very ornate with the motto "Pretiumque Et Causa Laboris" (both the prize and motive for labour"), and the current Burnley Borough Council crest a simplified version of the old County Borough crest with the motto "Hold To The Truth". Both can be found via Google. Enjoy comparing and contrasting the three versions!

I don’t disagree, but I think you have to accept that tastes change and if you want your merchandise to appeal to younger generations and wide audiences it needs to evolve and adapt to those changing tastes.

Chelsea, City, Villa, etc have all gone for round, simple, clean badges and JJ’s cap design follows that trend whilst still technically using our current badge.

I suppose to use your analogy, you may be quite happy with your 40 year old kitchen and cooker while it remains functional, but it’s likely if a young couple bought your house they’d find it hideous

The right strategy, which is the one the club appear to be adopting from the FAB notes I read, is to cater for all tastes and affections by having merchandise using all logo formats. FWIW I’d prefer say a cap using JJ’s design but maybe tops using the BFC logo, and a retro shirt with the ‘proper’ badge as I call it, so I like them all on different gear.

Good luck keeping your cooker going though 😉

Personally think the stuff JJ Watt posted on Instagram looked like something you'd find on Amazon Ads or the depths of an M&M Direct sale.

Football merch, t shirts in particular tend to be cheap material and horrendously tailored. I’d happily wear them if they were better quality and fit with a small tasteful badge/logo

Agreed. Bought some trackies from the club shop and they are poor quality.

Is it only me that finds the albeit good natured lumox somewhat tiring with his faux “ I’m claret till I die” schtik?
Sure , he’s an investor and raising his profile etc but all this spouting no nay never /bene n hot /we are Longside Burnley from someone who likely hasn’t the faintest idea of the rules of the game is just embarrassing appropriation IMO.
He seems like a really good guy but perhaps he could have eased his way in a little , I’m half expecting him to say he was on the Orient game ..

The duochrome badges could be down to something as simple as finance. Far cheaper producing them than the multi-coloured official badge= more profit.

He just wants to feel included and to let us know that he has done some Burnley research. Why would you want to keep him on the outside when you could welcome him with open arms. He is trying harder than most to spread the word. He has a much bigger audience than most of us clarets.

I thought it was quite odd how he seemed to come out of nowhere one minute and the next he was in the bus parade through the town centre.

I don’t think you can ever try too hard.

He’s going out of his way to promote the club and engage with the fans. And by the looks of things, helping out on the merchandising side, so putting some work in for the benefit of the club too.

I think it’s all great to see and exactly what you want from an investor.

I got one at the start of the season, black with a black badge (agreed, it looks better when understated). So they have had a few different designs.
He was wearing a BFC hat and t-shirt the other day to announce he was working for a US sports programme (although he had to do a second as he got the name wrong ha). I'd never seen the t-shirt, but he's just done a post pretending he was doing a kit unveil and had the same 'new' t-shirt. New to us I guess. I'm loving the coverage he is giving Burnley, you rarely see him without some BFC merch on.

I’ve not seen the black on black cap or I’d have been interested in that. Sounds nice.

Yes, the t-shirt is his own design. I’m expecting him to bring out a range.

What is really like though is for BFC to partner with a clothes house that will design a very fashionable range of clothing/footwear for them. I see a few on Insta pop up with really nice designs/quality but reasonably priced/accessible. Reckon they’d do an absolute bomb. There must be a partnership in there somehow.

But yes, I find what JJ is doing incredible. I see all his reels/stories whatever they’re called on Insta and he’s always in Burnley merch, promoting the club. Even if his actual posts are something else. Incredible to believe sometimes that we have a massive US sports star promoting our club, subtly or not so subtly, to sports fans across America. Real pinch yourself stuff.

If he could add a few more investors like him, willing to put in the same emotional investment too (or partnerships like the DudePerfect one) what they could achieve could be beyond anything we could imagine from the Garlick era.

I think he's great. For those who have also seen the Wrexham documentary, it obviously doesn't take long to fall in love with a traditional British club and its fan base. They're not used to that community feel with clubs in the US.

To say an investor is "trying too hard" is laughable IMO, especially when you see the lack of interest from investors/owners at other clubs.

Spot on.
If only there was some kind of written rule provided by supporters which stipulated exactly how you want an investor to behave.

Anybody who has friends and family over there will tell you how big a deal this guy is and the kind of exposure he is giving Burnley. He’s reaching a far bigger audience on the stuff he is doing than our televised games over there !!

Plus everything he is saying about the club and the town and its people is positive….extremely positive in fact.
If Dave Fishwick says something positive he’s a saint with some of our fans - even though he has pretty much no interest in football !!
