I'm intrigued as to what systems would suit him? All I'm reading is that United's system didn't suit him either. So he's been a flop at a more direct style (ours), he's been a flop at a counter attacking more mobile team (United). The one common denominator in all of these flops is the 6 foot plus flop himself..

A patient, possession-based system, like our own?
It's been very obvious to me all season that he'd be very well suited to the way we've played this season, an obvious upgrade on both Jay and Barnes and a big help in defending set pieces (our only obvious weakness).

He didn’t really get enough games for us to justify calling him a flop. He is a better player than many on here are giving him credit for.
I would be happy to see him in our Premier League squad next season. Yes he may not score a hatful, however he is a good link up player and can hold the ball up very well. The sort of player we will need next season when we will have far less of the ball than we enjoyed in the Championship.

There is only one system that would suit him and its a one way system to another club ASAP for as much as we can get for him.We don't want him anywhere near our club !

It could just work.

I reckon he'll get further up the pitch in a more controlled way with us, and he's pretty handy with his feet around the box.

So far, I don't like anything about his involvement with us.

Stranger things have happened.

You know why they signed him right?

It wasn't because he is a great player they had a spot to fill.

Everything I saw of him in a Man U shirt suggests he won’t be scoring goals in the PL anytime soon.

Slow, immobile, weak in the air and an amazing ability (for a striker) to get into the least dangerous positions when his team is attacking.

If someone is willing to offer £5m+ for him, cash in.

I hope to god that he doesn't return. The sight of that gangly gait of his striding up and down the pitch doesn't bear thinking about. Sean can have him at a knock down price. I reckon that he must have had a hand in signing him in the first place. I mean, he bought Crouch!

Manure would not have gone anywhere near him if he hadn't scored those two goals in the WC. A so-called top club signing a loan player on the back of two goals.

Only 2 goals in 31 appearances, in all competitions, but none in the Premier League.

He did so well they decided not to keep him. He seems to have become one of those Burnley players who rapidly improve the longer they are out of the team. I can't ever remember a player so talked about for so little output.

To be fair, it's not like he's drifted into obscurity and not played since he left us.

He went to Turkey and averaged 1 in 2.
Scored a brace in the World Cup quarter finals against the eventual winners
Went to Man Utd, played in virtually every single game including 2 domestic cup finals and Europa League games against Barcelona and came 3rd in the league.

Whether or not he comes back and plays for us I don't really mind but all this hyperbolic he's ****, he's done nothing seems to be ignoring the reality.

He's been **** in the Premier League from almost the word go. It's nice for him that he had his moment in the World Cup and before he came to Burnley he clearly had something about him in the Bundesliga.

Nobody can seriously get away from how bad he's been in the Premier League though. Clear to anyone with eyes on the field that his Manchester United colleagues were very aware of how out of place he was in that team. Unless we seriously consider being on the field to be an indicator that he's done something good, there's just absolutely nothing to suggest he's up to it.

One way of lucking at Aggi.

Another one is that he went to a poor league and scored 8 goals

He scored 2 goals for Netherlands after coming on as 4th sub 10 minutes from the end in a game they were losing 2-0

He played for a United team with forwards who the manager had said would not be here in the summer.

He failed to score in 17 premier league games for a team that hardly lost any of those games, scored lots of goals and make several chances a game (some very good ones for WW that he missed)

I agree with you that none of that means he is sh-ite. He very clearly is not. One of the best managers in Europe and one of the most experienced managers in the history of the game would not be picking a player who did not have quality. It’s just a hunch but I’m guessing they know more about the game than any of us on this message board.

The issue is that with the opportunities he has had for us and United it’s a pretty big risk for a team to take him and be confident he is going to score in this league.

People will say that his time at Burnley cannot be used as a yardstick because of the way we played under Dyche (despite the fact he did miss 3 or 4 big chances for us)

And people usually also say that United are a basket case of a club that can ruin a player - and that can also be true - other than this year they had a very good season and I’m not sure whether there is any logic for him missing some of the chances he missed at United which he scored with ease in Germany.

Since early April he's mostly featured as a sub. He only came on as sub in the FA Cup Final. Against Barcelona second league he was subbed at half-time with United 1-0 down and they went on to win 2-1. The impression is that latterly Martial was preferred. It seems like ten Hag had an idea that Weghorst would be beneficial for United but it didn't work out.

How can you arrive at this conclusion when he only played 20 games for us in an ultra negative Dyche set up? I accept he did miss a couple of decent chances, although the Villa one was actually good defensive covering by Mings.
I think if Vincent welcomes him into the fold he will be decent for us next season. Just my opinion of course as I know many on here have written him off. If Vincent doesn’t include him in his plans we will at least get back what we paid for him. Let’s wait and see.

I genuinely cant decide what I think is the right answer.

If the money we paid is offered, snap their hands off.
If Weghorst is back for pre-season in 3 weeks (taking into account he finished on Saturday), then lets see how he gets on - I can't see Kompany freezing him out at this stage.

I think he 'could' work well for us in the role that Barnes played.
However, the attitude, and lack of goals in the prem, make me hope someone puts an offer in.

Or, can we loan him to a championship side? Just for a laugh :-)

Yes, but he's still been coming off the bench virtually every game including the FA cup final when they needed a goal. I'm not saying that if he comes back he's going to score loads of goals or be our star player that keeps us up. Just that those queueing up to say how absolutely terrible he is are getting carried away.

I’m not a Weghorst fan by any means but I do know he’s not shite and neither was Bobby Zamora (he was a long long way from being shite actually)

I think people who use descriptions like that about players who have played for their country and in top European leagues have probably never played the game. If they had played to any kind of half decent level at some point they will have played against a team or a player where you quickly realise they are a step up in quality.

When you then see ex professionals playing the game in veteran matches for example you see another big difference in quality.

Take that up a few notches when you are talking about the likes of Weghorst and Zamora.

Doesn’t mean we should sign Weghorst or that he is good enough for United (or the Premier League even). But on the quality range there’s a lot in between that level and “shite footballer” !!

Who, despite being outstanding for us previously, has also been very poor since. So on balance we probably don’t have too much to complain about (although I imagine keeping Wood would’ve kept us up).

I still think we’ll get the £10m or close to. That’s a pittance now for an international striker, especially when Championship strikers are going for £15-20m. Someone will take him.
