Three out of four - Latcham, Dobson & Buxton all correct.

Must admit, I wouldn't have got the batsman. Nichol by the way left Burnley a year before Dobbo signed.

Taffy used to play in the local leagues.

Vince Overson used to play up Townley in the Summer while he played at Stoke and Birmingham. Not sure if he carried on when back at Burnley as I'd started playing adult cricket at Padiham on weekends by then.

Is the “batsman” (term used loosely) Willie Irvine?

I'd say that's definitely Willie Irvine.

I think I was there that day at Read - possibly about 1970? It was a cold, damp day and we borrowed a few players from Padiham to make up the numbers.

If they were all Burnley players at the time then it has to be 1967 given that Willie Irvine left before the end of the 67/68 season.

Billy O’Rourke RIP used to turn out with us in Rossy workshop league. Useful fast bowler.
He was dating the daughter of one of our lads at the time.

No. A fairly well known local goalkeeper in the 70s. Burnley fireman initials AR.

I remember Dobbo playing for CRGS old boys against the 1st XI. We’d all get the afternoon off school to watch and as Dobbo was in his second spell at the Turf at the time it was very exciting for us clarets at the school.

I know he fielded at slip, introduced some sledging and then caught me.

Bang on the money, the only one you missed was Paul Bradshaw at, well, third slip I suppose. The batsman is Read captain Wally Monk.

And here's the actual match report:
Nine Burnley footballers on Sunday, 15th August 1971, proved that the days of the all-round sportsman are far from over when they took to cricket and beat Read Cricket club by five wickets. The match was organised by Burnley skipper Martin Dobson, who also plays cricket for Read, and he must have been well-satisfied with his colleagues.

Read batted first and captain Wally Monk was out lbw with the first ball of the match from the hostile Doug Collins. With the help of Padiham player Brian Shirtcliffe (five for 19) the footballers shocked Read with some devastating bowling and enthusiastic fielding. The biggest cheer of the afternoon came when goalkeeper Peter Mellor dropped a catch and his colleagues commented that it was just like watching him on the football field. Read were all out for 58, with their top scorers being Frank Newby (27), Malcolm Grainger (26) and Neil Snape (16).

Dobson chose Eric Probert and Mellor as his openers but after scoring a single Mellor fell to David Pollard and then a confident partnership between Probert (13) and Leighton James (17) put their side in a very strong position. Despite frequent changes in the bowling attack Dobson and Colin Waldron kept the score going and when Waldron was out for a very impressive 18 Collins joined his skipper and the two saw the side home to victory.

I've been talking to Brian Shirtcliffe today at Padiham and Frank Newby yesterday when he came over to watch Read.

Did Brian Shirtcliffe play for Burnley for a short time or have I got the wrong player in mind.

Sure Quickenthetempo will confirm, but 99% certain Brian was Ribblesdale League throughout his career.

Copied for the actual match report shown by Grimsdale:

Read were all out for 58, with their top scorers being Frank Newby (27), Malcolm Grainger (26) and Neil Snape (16).

Maths may not be my strongest point and cricket has some interesting ways, but I'm struggling to understand a Read score of 58 when the three top scorers seem to exceed the total. How does that work?

I think we all worked that one out a few hours ago, Claret Toni......it was 158.

I think he tried Burnley for a year but not sure. I will ask him at the weekend.

Brian was one of the people that started the club at the Arbories in the 1950s.

Took many volunteers, over a few years to get the cricket and football clubs off the ground.

I might have the wrong player. Could it be Malcolm Heyworth I’m thinking about? He had a season at Burnley in the early 1990s.

Malcolm definitely did and so did his son Ryan.

I think both struggled to get regular first team games so didn't stay too long.

That did occur to me ever so briefly but I then wondered how a winning score might be achieved:

Dobson chose Eric Probert and Mellor as his openers but after scoring a single Mellor fell to David Pollard and then a confident partnership between Probert (13) and Leighton James (17) put their side in a very strong position. Despite frequent changes in the bowling attack Dobson and Colin Waldron kept the score going and when Waldron was out for a very impressive 18 Collins joined his skipper and the two saw the side home to victory.

Mellor, Probert and James out for 31 and the side in a very strong position. Seems odd. 18 from Waldron, so over 100 required from Collins and Dobson, without a mention of what would be, in context, significant scores. You get my drift?
