Bury are back at Gigg Lane

Post by BuryClaret » Mon Jun 05, 2023 1:35 pm

Great to see the news that Bury FC will be back playing at Gigg Lane in 2023/24.

It was sad to see the ground lying empty for so long. Can't wait to get back to a game there!

Thank goodness the two parties were able to come to an agreement to allow this to happen.

They are in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division which i think is where they were playing last season under the name of Bury AFC.

Same division as Padiham.

Correct. Ramsbottom United have just been relegated to that same division, if you're looking a local non-league derby next season.

Bury v Ramsbottom - now that’s a league fixture I never thought would happen

They'll do well to get back into the league from that level. I have been following the fortunes of Bradford [Park Avenue], largely due to my hatred of Bradford City. Relegated to level 7 - the Northern Premier League - this season.

It's a long haul, but Aldershot did it from an equivalent division. They managed to reach league 2,but are now finding life difficult in the National League

I think Wimbledon started that low too - they joined the Combined Counties League.

Yes, quite a few.

I learned while I was home, been a lot of behind the scenes trouble at Rammy Utd over the last few years.

I think there's a lot of behind the scenes trouble at most non league clubs. When clubs are run by volunteers and players have agents, dragging every last penny out, it's not a good mix.

It's the same old sht Barney. It won't change. The problem was not getting rid of the previous manager at the start of season. The squad of players had no quality for that level however nothing was done about it till it was far too late. Hopefully Wilkes will restore some pride. Phil the Pill.

Bury is a very large town but sadly most of the population support the likes of Man U or city and the likes of Liverpool etc. I lived there for a good few years and really only knew one dedicated bury fan. Yes I know there will be thousands but only a very small percentage of the population would have attended the home matches

That's the set up at Aldershot, although I'm not aware of too many problems.I do some voluntary work for them to keep me out of mischief during retirement.Without the volunteers, the club couldn't survive.

Last time I was there a very young David Nugent was tearing us a new one. I came away wishing we would step in and buy him. Little did I know he would eventually play for us about 10 years too late.

That certainly won’t be the case at Rammy, cannot for a moment think that the chairman would entertain an agent.

When non league football restarted after the lockdowns Ramsbottom were getting reasonable crowds, a few lads I knew had not renewed STs and were enjoying an afternoon at the riverside. This was the opportunity to capture a new audience in a few ways. On the playing side the best players were going elsewhere , off the pitch the place hasn’t improved in terms of catering / refreshments. Been to Trafford and Clitheroe and there’s different bars and food outlets, at Rammy they put a shed up with cans of carling and dark fruit. Not sure if this is because of the cricket club and maybe lease requirements, as in you cannot sell draught beer , fans will have to drink our rank beer.

We have played nearly 6 times the amount of top flight games than they have. Without looking, I’d also guess that we have more trophies than them too.

They won the FA Cup in 1913, the year before we did. That's it, I think. They have spent a lot of time in the 4th tier.

I’ve always thought that given the size of Bradford (it’s big) they have always had the (as yet unrealised) potential to be a huge club. I’ve never understood quite why they have spent what seems like most of their time scraping around in the lower divisions. Their crowds in those divisions have always held up and seem much better than ours when we were down there.
One of English footballs great enigmas I feel.

Interesting, always thought the same about the Bristol teams. There must be a few of the bigger English towns that for various reasons have never had any decent football teams, like Guildford or Bedford

Warrington has a population of over 200k with no decent team.

It’s real but not the old club. A new club called Bury AFC was set up and play at Radcliffe. There were some who wouldn’t/didn’t support it and vowed to get back to a team playing at Gigg Lane.

Cutting a long story short, they had a vote on whether they should merge with the opportunity to return to Gigg Lane. Without the merger it was all off. The vote didn’t carry it but after some lobbying they voted again. It’s enabled them to get some funding that wouldn’t be available without the merger.

This week they’ve received the all clear to be called Bury FC.

Always a popular ground for us to visit from.Rossendale. Over many years I've seen them.beat Man City(.in the 60's), just lose by one goal in the 70's to Nottingham Forest in the league Cup in front.of a very big crowd and sadly beat us in 1980 in the fa cup in front of a crowd of nearly 18,000.
Saw a great run of games in the 70's played on Sundays( three day week era) where they won three of four games and managed promotion at the end of the 73-74 season. Worked in Bury for 15 years too so good luck to them.

I recall the FA Cup tie at Bury. As a kid you would do anything to be there. That meant sitting in car in a pub carpark for 2 hours whilst my Dad and his mates were in the hostelry.

It was the first time I had sat in a stand to watch a match. Me and my dad were used to standing up on the Bee Hole End before I progressed onto the Longside. That day there was no room at the Burnley end behind the goals. Out of the 18,000 on the ground there was probably about 10,000 from Burnley.

We did lose that day but the name Malcolm Smith comes to mind as having some impact on the game.

I will gladly receive any corrections on my account of that day.

A lost ground has now been found.

Remember it well, aged 7! Sat in the main stand, us kids were banned from having any cans of pop as there was going to be no going to the toilet or we would have lost our seats (lines painted on benches). Lost 1-0, bit of a controversial goal , think Stevenson dropped a shot that was judged to be just over the line. Had been to Gigg Lane before then and seen really small away followings (who used to swap ends with home fans at HT) it was a real eye opener for a young lad to see a massive crowd on the Manchester Rd End. There was no swapping of ends that day!!

Easily 10,000 from Burnley. A very poor performance on a very cold day. Malcolm Smith was in the team.along with the likes of Mike Phelan, Marshall Burke and Leighton James. Someone called Whitehead scored the only goal.of the game.

Hopefully they retained the fan base, absolutely terrible what happened to them with the money thrown around in todays game. I wish them the best of luck, hopefully they can climb back up the pyramid quickly.

It was shocking what happened there with Steve Dale but a warning to every football fan everywhere that this can happen.

Pre-season double header at Gigg Lane this weekend - Bury playing Bradford City tomorrow then PNE on Sunday.

Anyone going along?

They passed the 1000 mark on season ticket sales this week I believe.
