Rule 259 of The Highway Code

Post by No Ney Never » Wed Jun 07, 2023 9:02 pm

Rule 259 of The Highway Code is about joining motorways 🛣️

It states:

When you join the motorway, you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway. You should:

✅ Give priority to traffic already on the motorway
✅ Check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane
✅ Not cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder
✅ Stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
✅ Remain in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking

Yes, but what the knobheads who stay in lane one, at the same speed, never giving you a chance to get in? That's just as dangerous.

If you end up having to virtually stop on the slip road that's not a good thing.

Sometimes you can join a motorway carriageway from the right. Take junction 25 on the m60 going anticlockwise for example.

It frustrates the hell out of me does inconsiderate driving but, like many aspects of the HC, the key word is should, not must.

We need to adopt the French system of moving into the middle at motorway junctions to allow the traffic coming on to join safely

If you are in lane one,it's not always possible to move out into lane two due to traffic outside you in lane two.At the end of the day the onus is on the cars coming on to the slip Rd to adjust their speed as they approach the junction.

Exactly. It's the knobheads coming on to the sliproad who are at fault. 😁

The second bullet point is extremely difficult where I live. When I join the M6, the traffic in the left hand lane is usually stationary.

🤣🤣. You obviously don’t use the motorways that much. Have you seen the volumes of traffic? Move over to the middle lane? There’s no room!

To be fair, I genuinely thought that was what you had to do on motorways, and it’s what I look to do where possible. I get very nervous when I’m in the left hand lane passing junctions and I have traffic merging on the left, and traffic on the right that don’t allow me to move into the middle lane. I feel like I’m going to be bottlenecked

And yet the matrix signs constantly inform drivers to keep to the left when possible. Joining traffic from the slip road can join safely, by giving way to traffic ALREADY on the motorway. As per Highway Code. End of.

There are some slip roads that are either very short or at an acute angle so you have a split second to make a go/no go decision.

Then you SHOULDNT virtually stop on the slip road. That would mean when a gap appears you would be attempting to join traffic at 10mph say, and everyone else at 70mph +, and that is as you say not a good thing. potentially catastrophic for many I’d say.
You should carry on at a decent speed along the hard shoulder until you can safely join the traffic.

Moving over to the second lane is not always an option.
Leaving at J9 on the M65 for instance - if you move out here
you'll struggle to get back in to the 1st lane in time to exit the
motorway,

The signing at this junction is awful, it can't be seen until you've gone under
the bridge, by which time its a little late and people pull in and out of the
1st lane like crazy.

The morons slowing down before leaving the motorway, really annoy me. Its dangerous and also causes everyone else to have to slow down. The junction into Nelson/Barrowford is really bad for it.

Said this for ages about this junction, the number of drivers who suddenly pull into the 2nd lane at the last moment is amazing.

Tell that to the guys behind you.

Yes, I know the HC says joiners' responsibility, but the drivers on the motorway need to play a part. I like to think I do.

200k miles a year and much on motorways.

GREEN- entry & exits for slip roads
RED- separates Lane 1 from the hard shoulder
WHITE- in between lanes.
AMBER- on the right separate far right lane from the central reservation

What’s the prize for this quiz?? ;)

The signage on most motorways is awful, with trees and bushes covering up many signs, or at least a half of a sign. Councils should be made to clip em back, or Highways Agency, or anyone!! This country is on its arse.
