Charity Shield 2023
in 1973, as 2nd Division Champions) we were invited to play City in the Charity Shield (Liverpool - 1st Div Champions + Sunderland FA Cup winners declined).
It is customary the Shield is played between 1st Div Champions + FA Cup winners.
As both have been won by City will we be invited to play City in the season curtain raiser?
...it would be some pre-season friendly!

Re: Charity Shield 2023
Does seem silly to not have City vs United instead since at least United won the League Cup.

Double winners tend to play Premier League runners up.
Though with the Premier League runners-up winning a place in the Champions League and the Playoff winners getting a payday at Wembley, I don't think it unreasonable to award the Championship winners a place in the Charity Shield if the double is won.

To be fair I don't to have to fork out to go see us lose 6-0 at Wembley after being awarded a place purely on pity.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 11:38 amDouble winners tend to play Premier League runners up.

Anybody else remember Waldrons winner at Cuty in the 73 Charity Shield ? An absolute classic free kick routine that fooled everybody including me. The City fans were laughing at what they thought was a screw up by us until Waldron appeared like magic to score

Re: Charity Shield 2023
Just a few weeks later we played City at home and got another free kick in a similar position. City this time waited for the late run at the far post which didn't happen and Paul Fletcher just ran to the near post to nod in a simple goal. Absolutely brilliant from us.

Re: Charity Shield 2023
We had some brilliant deadball routines under Adamson.
Waldrons shot that hit the bar against Liverpool in the FA Cup was special, I think that one was from a corner.

Re: Charity Shield 2023
In 1971 Arsenal won double but were contracted to play pre-season friendlies…the Charity Shield was played between Liverpool (FA cup runner-up) and Leicester City (2nd Division champions)
article from The Guardian:
In 1971 Arsenal won the Double, the second club in the 20th century to do so, but whereas that would usually confirm their place in the Charity Shield, they had other plans for early August. Rather than take part in what is the traditional season opener, Arsenal played a series of friendlies: two against Benfica (home and away), and on the day faced Feyenoord in Rotterdam.
During their march to the Double they had been forced to cancel a friendly with Benfica, under pressure from the powers that be wanting their players available for the home internationals. “That left a nasty taste in the mouth,” said Bob Wall, Arsenal’s secretary at the time, so the only way to wash it away was the palate-cleanser of two games in August and a trip to the Netherlands tacked on.
So, with the champions and FA Cup-winners indisposed, who would get the honour of playing in the Charity Shield? Liverpool were a logical choice, having lost the Cup final to Arsenal the previous May, but beyond that the options were wide and varied. Leeds (the runners-up in the league), Tottenham (the League Cup winners) and Chelsea (the Cup-Winners’ Cup holders) were considered, but in the end they plumped in favour of Leicester, the Second Division champions.

Re: Charity Shield 2023
It had become something of a nonsense in the early 1970s with teams not wanting to take part. It looked as though we were going to play in it again in 1974 when both champions Leeds and cup winners Liverpool pulled out. Then the FA moved it to Wembley which quickly led to both clubs changing their minds. Other than years when there has been a team winning the double, it’s been the case since.claretblue wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 3:43 pmIn 1971 Arsenal won double but were contracted to play pre-season friendlies…the Charity Shield was played between Liverpool (FA cup runner-up) and Leicester City (2nd Division champions)

Re: Charity Shield 2023
The whole purpose of the Community Shield is to raise money. Do you really think that if Burnley appear they will raise as much money as, say, Arsenal?
