Action has been taken against 13 German nationals for their roles in disorder which caused a pre-season friendly in Burnley to be abandoned.
An investigation was launched after trouble broke out 38 minutes into the friendly game between Burnley Football Club and Hannover 96 at Turf Moor on August 5, 2017.
Both Hannover and Burnley fans were involved in the disorder in the David Fishwick stand, where violence was used and around £9,000 worth of damage was caused.
As a result the game was abandoned at half-time, and an investigation launched.
We launched an extensive inquiry to identify those responsible, working with partners from across Europe. One defendant was even arrested while on a family holiday in Italy.
The Hannover fans identified were recently given the following sanctions.
A 37-year-old man from Germany - €3,000 fine.
A 35-year-old man from Germany - €2,700 fine.
A 28-year-old man from Germany – €3,000 fine.
A 28-year-old man from Germany – €4,000 fine.
A 28-year-old man from Germany – €2,700 fine.
A 24-year-old man from Germany – €1,500 fine.
A 21-year-old man from Germany – €5,400 fine.
A 19-year-old man from Germany – €3,000 fine.
A 42-year-old man from Germany – €1,000 fine.
A 31-year-old man from Germany – €1,000 fine.
A 39-year-old man from Germany – €2,700 fine.
A 24-year-old man from Germany - €2,700 fine.
A 56-year-old man from Liverpool was given an adult caution for affray.
The Burnley FC fans identified were prosecuted for Section 4 Public Order. Three received adult cautions and two were referred to the Youth Offending Team.
The behaviour displayed that day by a mindless group of individuals is not that expected of true football fans and certainly not something that will be tolerated by Lancashire Police.
This has been a long investigation and many people have worked long hours to identify those responsible for those shocking violent scenes.

If the ages mentioned are current ages, then one of them was 13 at the time

Remember when many on here were claiming that no Germans would be arrested/charged because it was all about the police targeting Burnley fans?

And if you recall I always said it was ongoing. Whatever the rights and wrongs here there was a real determination from this end to ensure that appropriate action was taken against the Hannover fans.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 4:14 pmRemember when many on here were claiming that no Germans would be arrested/charged because it was all about the police targeting Burnley fans?

This is good news and decent fines too. No room for thuggery, either at football or elsewhere.

Why disorder at a pre season friendly??
At any game to be fair, but especially that..

Re: Hannover fans
Werent exactly shocking scenes compared to other grounds
Re: Hannover fans
Who at the club thought it was a good idea to organise a pre-season friendly, especially as the police presence indicated there might be trouble at the match.
Was madness to even contemplate a game against them beforehand.

Re: Hannover fans
I remember watching them being escorted down Centenary Way from the train station and thinking there might be trouble - most of them looked like your classic European ultras, dressed all in black with no club colours.

Fast, fearless and relentless policing from our noble guardians of justice at Lancashire constabulary . It’s easy to call the old bill terrified, overweight ,out of condition , Tik Tok dancing misfits , but this really shows you don’t mess with the best. It sends out a blood curdling message to the wicked Hun. “Stay away from these shores or you may receive an Adult caution and a jolly good telling off”

Re: Hannover fans
In Germany. It would have been very difficult to have brought them back over here but the police here and in Germany have worked together on it to ensure they went to court. I was told some considerable time ago that the Bundesliga were also very helpful with the investigation.

The second world war lasted about the same length of time, glad Lancashire constabulary didn't replace Churchill or we'd still be fighting.

Re: Hannover fans
I had my camera on me that day, this is one of the shots I took. I was accosted by a German lad who said 'delete, delete that photo now' - I told him to chill and showed him the photo and that I'd deleted it; stupid sod didn't realise the camera fired a burst of 12 a second. I knew from their attitudes outside the ground that they weren't here for the footy, and saw the start of the bother from the touchline as I was on stretcher bearing duties.

No need to do that, I just remained my usual polite self, deleted one and had another 11 to do what I wanted to do with seriously thick and he is in this photo too (the blonde one just over the Policeman's shoulder)

They probably knew about Burnley's reputation in the 80s and 90s, Suicide Squad etc and thought there was a decent chance of a ruck.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 8:23 pmStill couldn't really believe that, they came proper up for a scrap at a frigging preseason game

Re: Hannover fans
Glad to see that a form of justice was finally meted out to this lot.
Well done to Lancs constabulary and the others involved for seeing it through, I thought this has been swept under the carpet.

Re: Hannover fans
Not sure organising the game was the problem here, more a case of homework not being done. Plenty of “intelligence” available in the build up to the game suggesting their “ultras” were coming for a ruck. For it to be so badly managed on the day that the game had to be abandoned was very poor.
Re: Hannover fans
I think I'm right in saying they did exactly the same thing the pre season earlier at Norwich.
And then Burnley invited them over to do it all over again.
Bizarre to say the least.

Re: Hannover fans
They’d played at Norwich a year earlier but not aware of anything happening there that was anything like what happened at Burnley.
Re: Hannover fans
I heard they were singing some very rude songs about Delia's Schnitzel and Sauerkraut recipes. Very touchy those Ultras.
Re: Hannover fans
I remember a video going round . After the game they were marching them past the Brick makers Arms. Some old lad on his own comes out from the pub and wades into the middle of them all ranting and raving. The look of confusion and panic on the faces was hilarious.

A few years ago a workmate got arrested in Adelaide airport just as he arrived with his wife and two kids;. Having assaulted someone in Aus fifteen years earlier he'd skipped before they got him to court and assumed they'd have 'forgotten all about it'.
