Worst hotel you have ever stayed?

Post by shulgin » Sat Jun 10, 2023 2:18 pm

Some counterbalance to the other thread.

For me, me and four mates stayed in an attic room above a pub in Blackley, Manchester. Never heard of Blackley before as living away but pictures looked good and 50 quid between us for a night on the pop in 2003.

Got to Blackley, smashed up phone boxes in the drive in. The pub space itself was okay but was full of some violent looking chavs and stank of weed.

The room was dingy, sheets were questionable. Shower was being held together by blu tac.

Went out, came back in the early hours and my mate had his car broken into. The thief had dropped his phone. We went through it and it was clearly a local as the pub no was in his phone.

We grilled the landlord who was cagey the next day and just left without paying.

I worked in Blackley back in the early 1990s - it's not an area where I'd be looking for a hotel though.

Stayed in a hotel in Brighton once which didn’t have a window - I seem to recall it had a jacuzzi bath though so swings and roundabouts.

Arrived at our hotel in Torquay (we were playing at Plymouth the following day) wanting to throw bags in room and get out for a late tea… two single beds, perfect until my mate pulled back his cover… full of skid marks. We were a lot later getting tea than we expected,.. finding a whole other hotel worth of delay. Only time I have actually walked out of B+B.

Between two really:

At lake Lipno in 2001, the digs were basically sheds with bunk beds, the mattresses were 3 sofa style cushions held together with sheets that were frankly crunchy where they bent underneath the cushions. The showe was a single fixed shower head that trickled like a dehydrated squaddie after a 4 day yomp across the sahara.

Kazakh workers digs in Brno. It was basically the Auf Wiedersehn Pet immersive experience. Could prbably charge a fortune for it in the UK as a novelty for stags.

Honourable mention to the B&B in Swansea that said it was near the football ground (Aye, the bloody Vetch about 6 years after the move )and ran by a psycotic looking aussie who greeted us holding a cleaver.

After the first lockdown, we spent a week or so in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders in some lovely places. We decided to travel back down the east coast through Northumberland and finish off in Scarborough.

Having nothing booked for Scarborough, I opted for the Grand Hotel, primarily because I’d always wanted to have a look around it. The room price should have warned me away but how bad could it be!?

Grand it was not! You could see how nice it would have been back in the day but that must have been decades ago.

A thirty minute queue to check in alongside the North East’s finest, adorned in attire that would have struggled to sell from a sale rack in Sports Direct.

On finding our room, it stunk of smoke, curtains hanging off the rail, a bathroom that I wouldn’t have used if I’d shat myself and a carpet more threadbare I am yet to see.

Another queue resulted in an ‘upgrade’ to a sea view superior room - it may have faced the sea but you wouldn’t have known for the salt and pigeon **** all over the windows. It was better but not by much!

I know now why it was fifty quid for a a room!

It’s a shame that places such as this fall into disrepair but they’re probably trapped in a vicious cycle. Perhaps global warming might eventually see the now rundown seaside towns having a bit of a revival.

Until then, I think most of them are up the creek without a paddle.

Seems to be a trope of faded seaside glamour about the huge Seaside hotels. The Norbreck and one at Llandudno come to mind too. They must be sitting on them waiting for someone to make a huge bid to build apartments on the site

Without a doubt a hotel we stopped in on Seven Sisters Road for one night when we were playing Spurs a few years ago in a midweek cup game. Think it’s the game we were beaten 4-1 and Les Thompson possibly scored ?

The hotel was the pits - it was £11 a night each and that included breakfast….which was awful. I think if you chose to not have breakfast it was £12 !!!

Back in the early 80s I was working at Lakenheath in Suffolk with my assistant. We looked for B&B and saw a sign for i one whilst driving along. As we entered, I noticed the house name was Anfield. I said to my oppo that that was a funny coincidence as its where Liverpool play.
We knocked on the door and a guy answered in full reds kit and hat. It turned out to be the guy who was in the news just before for naming his kid after the whole team!
He said £6 per night , sharing. We said ok.
We went to the pub for tea and eventually came back. I opened the bedroom door and could smell fags. Sure enough the third bed in the room was occupied by another guy reading a book in bed and smoking his fag. My bed was about 2ft away. An uncomfortable night was spent. Next morning he lit up and farted.. not a great experience especially us being non smokers!

Almost worse, is when youve stayed in a lovely one, and then have a couple of days at a lesser one before youre flight back.

Put simply, if Marconfort Griego in Torremolinos is 4 star, im James Bond

Stayed in a Keswick hotel last year, no bread or toast available at breakfast and staff had no money to go out and purchase any, £150 per night.

A Travelodge around the Arundel area near Brighton. The room they put me in stank like it had just hosted a gangbang and there was a turd curled up in the loo the width of my forearm.

Spent 5 minutes in there, threw up, vacated the premises and headed into Brighton.

Now demolished but turned up at Pont Gardena on an Italian BH in 1993 and the only room we could get was at the Post Hotel. Travelling with Mrs T and my Ma, we had to share the room. It was filthy. What made the night worse was having two couples of Swiss bikers in the next room in training for the shagging Olympics. The headboards were clattering most of the night.
A night to remember.

Can't remember the name of he place. A late booking 5 nights in Costa Adeje Tenerife. The noisiest hotel I've been in full of chavvy Mancs and Glaswegians - no I'm not saying all people from those places are the same - terrible food uncomfortable rooms.

Best part of the stay was the bus back to the airport.

Can't remember the name but a place in Bristol where I stayed whilst working. Was awoken by water dripping on my head which had come through the ceiling from the shower in the room above!

Romania for me...my honeymoon, 45 years ago. Romania was just starting to encourage tourists....but you couldn't move far.

Arrived late at night. Dingy would be an understatement. Git into bed and both thought it felt damp. Went to reception. No English. Managed to get a room change. Not much better. Spent night in our clothes!

Red Roof Inn at Disney, Florida, I think it made it worse in that this was an upgrade on a trip my husband had won, he always tell everyone that winning that holiday was the most costly holiday we've ever had in our lives together! However, I don't think it's actually the money we spent, more the grief I gave him and what he spent trying to calm me down! It was a three stay holiday, 2 nights Disney, 2 nights Fort Lauderdale and three nights in the Bahamas, all the hotels were rubbish but he'd upgraded to the Red Roof Inn from what was in the actually holiday win. I still find it difficult to believe there could have been a worse place to stay.

We had just moved to the states when he won it, he was so very excited, children were excited, we had no idea what the Red Roof Inn was, but we know now, at least we've learnt from our mistakes!

Hotel in Hull, staying for work. Coming back from drinks with friends, had to share the lift with a ‘lady of the night’ and her client, both of whom were off their faces. Then had to listen to them through the paper-thin walls for what seemed like hours. Must have cost him a few bob!

Definitely one in Blackpool near the Gynn pub. End of season do with the football lads, bit disappointed when told we'd be sharing but at least we could split the cost. My £6 was worth it I suppose, especially as brekkie was chucked in too!!!!

In 1981, I stayed at what is now a refurbished Boutique Hotel on Warmoesstraat in the centre of Amsterdam as a 17 year old on a Rugby Tour. Police Station next door, and on the other side premises for Ladies of " negotiable affection " ! It would have given a Youth Hostel a bad name, I see now it's a " non smoking " establishment, which was not the case 42 years ago, and I'm not talking Players No6 here ...

Apparently the Police Station closed in 2000, but the Hotel is now the starting point for a retired Dutch Detective, who conducts " Murder Walks " around the area, focusing on the 1970's and 80's !

The "bunk house" at the Bridge of Orchy hotel somewhere between Glasgow and somewhere else...

The main hotel we'd stayed in previously was full but they had the bunk house for a low low price.

Just a pair of bunk beds and that's it.

Oh and a massive infestation of fleas absolutely everywhere. It was like the flea Olympics, I was only disappointed not to see a couple of them making their way around the duvet on little bycicles.

Would have slept in the car except we were on motor bikes

I won't include backpackers hostels in this list despite once having an Albanian fiddle with himself in a bunk above me in St Kilda, Melbourne.

The worst that instantly comes to mind was a BnB in Wick on the north Scotland coast. There were 3 competing bad smells. It had dirty nylon sheets. There were handwritten labels on absolutely everything with bizarre rules. The TV had to be turned off at 8pm. Guests had to be in their rooms by 9pm or the front door would be locked. Breakfast was served no later than 7am. The bathroom window had to be kept open when taking a shower. I suspect this was because he could spy on people from the garden when they were taking a shower. Creepy and dirty.

When my life got turned upside down and I was unemployed and splitting from the wife, I had to use a B&B in Chorley to be able to see my kids every weekend. It was an absolute pit of a place, but the only place within my budget. Definitely a place where you wipe your feet on the way out.

After a few weeks of that, decided to sleep in the car instead.
