Close of play on the opening day perhaps
I think you knew what I was implying.
But to answer the question
The only ever 500+ score on the First day of a Test was England's 506 against Pakistan last year, although we did make 481 in an ODI innings in 2018 against Australia.
Australia made 475 in a day against England back in the 1930s
I can't find any record of England scoring 450 + in a day against Australia, but I'll keep looking.

Listening to TMS. Great to get some articulate insights from Alister Cook, instead of the crap Tufnell spouts.

Can't believe they didn't even appeal that Crawley nick there. Can you imagine Ponting letting that go?

Really bizarre that they missed that.
Hopefully Crawley uses that luck to get a big one. He’s batted really well so far.

Your eyes are fine.
I think its one of them. You'd be really unlucky to be given out in real time by the onfield umpire as it appeared to be pitching outside, but the technology showed that it just pitched in line.

Cracking delivery from Boland that. Shame for England and Crawley in particular who had played beautifully.

Aussies will be delighted with three wickets. Decent scoring rate but three in the wickets column is massive in the first session.
Evenly balanced but I'd say that wicket makes it Australia's session.
Big afternoon coming.

England are well on top here, treating their bowlers like they are Lowerhouse 2nd teamers.
The great sign is we're not scared of them.
Despite the mouthing off before the game, the Aussies backed down from the confrontation. Going on the defensive and hoping for mistakes.

Giving cheap wickets away again, why can't we just dig in for a while and bat sensibly, the aussies were always going to come out fighting after lunch, they'd have felt that the match could be won or lost in this session and it looks like that will be the case, root and bairstow need centuries now to be back in a winning position, we should have dug in and put ourselves in a position not to lose and at the same time frustrate the aussies.

With our scoring rate and playstyle it’s hard to conceive of a draw unless there’s significant weather disruption.
To win - Christ, hard to say .. does look like a batters wicket but we won’t know till Australia bat
I’d say absolute minimum we need is 400, but I’d say more along 450, which will be a big ask from here

Hopefully Root & Bairstow can build this partnership and get through the rest of the day.
I’ve a feeling once one of these go, we’ll have a bit of a collapse the the tail enders

Good partnership so far of 94 between Root and Bairstow.
380 about par for me. It's not playing as fast as first thought, not easy to time it to the boundaries.
Might get quicker tomorrow.
This is normally the easier session to score runs. Tired bowlers and long session.
