Another sequence of hot-headed brain farts from our middle/late order could see us bowling again around tea time with a deficit to think about.

Very hard to call. Aussies slight favourites for now.
I'd be quite pleased if we can bat till around tea. At the rate we score that would give us at least parity and probably a decent lead. I would be more concerned that we're out around lunch time.

Top day at headingley yesterday, good start, dull middle, good end. Could have been better if Bairstow and root had worn their bigger hands. The real question is did I spy dandeclaret on the prawn sandwiches?

There was a gent with a strong resemblance in there yesterday.... apparently he's back in Dublin today absolutely knackered having flow in early yesterday morning, and back out late last night.... Where were you sat?

Listening to the Wisden cricket podcast last night - England have dropped 14 catches (6 by Bairstow and a missed stumping) - and that's probably the thing more than anything that will decide this series. Bairstow's nickname of Cymbals well and truly earned.

Down below you in the East stand. I felt posh having access to a proper bar in the long room but it was still riffraffish enough to keep me grounded.

Should be good batting conditions today;

Hoping we can get to 350 +

Bairstow and Rooty did well last night whilst under the cosh not giving away another wicket

Some big innings from Stokes, Ali & Woakes much needed

So the question is why does he keep getting picked, when he's arguably one of the worst wicketkeepers in test cricket?

It's not rocket science is it? His ability level is evidently massive, it's just that he's not in form that often. Last year was one of the most impressive summers of test match batting from an individual that I can remember. So, if you take that Duckett and Crawley are going to open, Root is at 4, and Stokes is at 7, then 4 bowlers then it leaves you to pick from Pope, Brook, Bairstow and Foakes to fill 3 places. Who are you dropping? And don't go down the obscure stuff of people who have never opened being able to open... that won't work.

Yeah agreed, was expecting it to be pretty hostile from the off but it never really got going. Western terrace was just the usual dreary barmy army guff until Carey came out.

I’ll blame the wicket on Nasser Hussain - giving it the big build up “It’s Yorkshire against Australia” 😂😂

Couldn't have started any worse to be honest let's hope we can get at them and try and post a decent score because there's some rain about tomorrow according to the forecast.

I genuinely think we'll follow on at this rate.

Aussies to finish us off (and the series) by teatime Saturday.

Runs will be like gold dust on this pitch today... We need to fight for every single run... I'm not sure we're geared up to do that.

Root got a beauty tbf....no complaints there.

I'm no fan of the tykes, and reckon he's a p1ss-poor keeper, but I'd love to see Bairstow get a score today.

From the BBC:
"I didn't want to be saying this so early but we're told Ollie Robinson will bat if needed today, having gone off with a back spasm yesterday."

Does that mean we could be an extra wicket down if he has to bat like Nathan Lyon?

Good ball, but Root pushed at it. Tough one to receive 2nd ball, he might have played it better later in his innings.

If you're fishing, good bait..... if not, the follow on rule is that you need to be at least 200 behind, which was never going to happen.

Whenever we bowl well I expect the worse... You just know the batters will come out, learn nothing from the other side and do a better job of a collapse

Root and brooks are the only ones with averages above 40

I'm actually not fishing. I thought the follow was if it was less than 50% of first runs scores, not < 200. My apologies.

My point remains exactly the same, I expected this done by tomorrow tea. England have made too many mistakes and not capitalised on Autralias. That's throughout the whole series.

Do many sides even enforce the follow on these days?

I think Australia were one of the first not to bother doing that.

I'm guessing that could be the that drops bairstow, and I can't see a win from this point, game over 3-0 to the aussies. I said at the end of the 2nd test, too many player's treating it like it's just another game, it's the ashes ffs, but 14 dropped catches is never going to win the ashes and we're only in the 3rd test, too many cheap wickets, playing shots we should never be playing at, simply not good enough, time for more big changes.

I know it’s probably counter intuitive but I think stokes and Ali have to go on the attack similar to what Marsh did.
