Also seems ironic with the potential Mbappe transfer muted today.

According to Clough in his autobiography it was £999,999 as he refused to pay a million !ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:24 pmThe first thing I used to think when I heard his name.
An outrageous sum, some said at the time.
RIP
Great player for Forest but even late in his career at QPR I remember he was brilliant
Sad news indeed.

Re: Trevor Francis
They’ve just announced his passing on SSN and mentioned the fee. It turns out it was £1,150,000 in total. Just a bit of Clough.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:40 pmAccording to Clough in his autobiography it was £999,999 as he refused to pay a million !

One that was accurate was Spurs paying £99,999 for Jimmy Greaves.
First time I saw Francis was for Birmingham at Sheffield Wednesday. He was just 16 but even then everyone was talking about him and his potential; he scored twice in a 3-3 draw.
I’m not sure whether he ever played on the Turf.

I was at Birmingham University when he started making headlines playing for Birmingham in what was then the Second Division.
At one stage he scored 16 goals in 15 games.

Just to add, I think he flew back from an England game the night before, possibly in Spain, to play in the testimonial as I recall.BacupClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:53 pmTony, he played on the Turf in Alan Stevensons testimonial

I think I remember the Birmingham strip at the time with that big white vertical stripe down the front ?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:47 pmThey’ve just announced his passing on SSN and mentioned the fee. It turns out it was £1,150,000 in total. Just a bit of Clough.

He seemed to have everything as a footballer - just glided past players. If anything his worst spell was under Clough as don’t think they particularly got on. That documentary about English clubs in Europe you could see how upset he was (and how much of a bully Clough was) when Trevor Francis had to miss the final with a bad injury and he wanted to go and watch the game and Clough refused.
Francis was himself a strong character so I can imagine how Clough would not like any player to have his own opinion

Didn't they both play the second half? Seem to remember Corrigan playing outfield in a shirt several sizes too small for him. Terribly sad news to read of his passing. Such a name in English football he features in the closing theme tune to Only Fools and Horses. One of the greats! RIP Trevor
I am happy to be corrected but I believe he had never been booked in his career until he was sent off for headbutting Billy Wright? in about 1982

Remember him being the big draw for that match. I was certainly incredibly excited that a million pound player was playing at the Turf.BacupClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:53 pmTony, he played on the Turf in Alan Stevensons testimonial

Re: Trevor Francis
Very sad indeed. I saw him score those four goals as a Birmingham fan and went on to meet him briefly in Knowle where he lived. Now a clarets fan through my wife born in Brierfield. RIP Trevor.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 3:46 pmRIP Trevor. Fabulous striker.

About him playing on the Turf would he have played in the mid 70s seasons?

I saw him play a good few times for Forest as his spell with them coincided with me living in that city. Very good player and a humble /pleasant man.
Always a bit sobering when somebody who was a fine athlete and younger than yourself dies.

I think he may have played in a reserve game at Turf Moor but I may be mistaken.
Roy of the Rovers always used to use him in stories, complaining about not being picked for England regularly
