I was discussing this with a friend about who the lowest ranked team we have played in a competitive league /cup game, I thought Canvey Island, but on seeing the teams above, I'm not so sure.

Alan Simonsen did indeed play for Charlton in this game. The visitors actually had 2 players sent off in the 2nd half - Mark Aizlewood & Derek Hales (Hales had also been sent off against us in the away game earlier in the season, thereby recording an unusual double).Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 5:37 pmI was at this game and I'm pretty sure Charlton included Simonson who although well past his best had not long previously been named European Player of the Year (whilst playing for someone on the continent, maybe Ajax?)
I'm also thinking they might have had a sending off but I'm unsure AND that we scored all our goals in the first half, but that seems unlikely tbh.
We were only 2-1 up at half time, and actually scored our final 5 goals in the last 13 minutes.

Re: On this day
Hi Dark Cloud,
I don't know whether or not Simonsen played in that match but he was definitely at Charlton that season. I was at The Valley when he was introduced to the Charlton faithful prior to our game there. He'd just signed from Barcelona. It was a pretty major coup by Charlton. However, and that I couldn't remember, it ended in tears.
"He made a shock move to English Second Division side Charlton Athletic for £300,000 in October 1982. He rejected offers from Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, in order to play for a club with less stress and attention. Despite scoring nine times in 16 appearances, the club had trouble funding his transfer and wages after three months, and he was put up for sale. His £1,300 per week wages had not been paid, and as a result, he was free to leave the club for nothing. Simonsen then chose to return to his childhood club VB in 1983. " (Source: Wikipedia)
I had to check re the Ballon d'Or. He won it in 1977 when at Borussia Monchengladbach.
With all due respect to him, when you think of most of the players who've won the Ballon d'Or, it's amazing he did get it. That same year Rob Rensenbrink finished seventh in the voting but IMHO Rensenbrink was one of the best wingers in the last 50 years.

Just checked. From The Guardian.
Warning: Some viewers might find the language offensive.
Derek Hales and Mike Flanagan
"The story is that the source of the feud was Derek "Killer" Hales's testicles (or, to be more precise, testicle). On January 9, 1979, in an FA Cup tie at The Valley against Maidstone, Hales failed to pass to Flanagan and his curly-haired strike partner is said to have called him a 'one-bollocked *******'. Hales was very sensitive in the groin area and a fight broke out. The pair were sent off."
I believe they were actually mates who occasionally frequented SE London hosteleries.

100 years ago today we reached the FA Cup Semi-Finals with a 3-1 replay win over Swindon Town at Turf Moor. Over 34,000 there for a game played on a Wednesday afternoon, many no doubt having bunked off work. Cartoon from Burnley Express 15/03/1924, courtesy British Newspaper Archive.
Also 41 years ago today another FA Cup QF at home, sadly less successful, although if Steve Taylor had put that early penalty away past Bob Bolder who knows.

Remarkable record at Burnley of 187 goals in 337 total appearances, a record unlikely ever to be surpassed.
If Willie Irvine's serious injury hadn't brought his time at the Turf to an abrupt end the story might well have been different, but still 187 for Beel was some achievement including 35 league goals in the 1927/28 season alone.

Burnley 2 Plymouth Argyle 1.
Scorers Jackie Chew and the legendary Harry Potts.
First season back for league football after WW2 and we ended the season 2nd in Division 2 (promoted) and beaten finalists in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. We would spend the next 24 seasons in Division 1.

Not quite right mdd. You are correct about the rock hard pitch which was also covered in snow in places. However it was Newcastle who missed a penalty, not us. Bobby Mitchell pea rolled it down at the Bee Hole End in the first half. Pilky put us 1 up but Ivor Broadis levelled matters early in the second period.mdd2 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 11:46 amMaybe she is thinking of the Cup games in 1954

One of our greatest away victories at Dirty Leeds. Privileged to be there. 1-4 despite a missed arrest for the police for Hunter's assault on Frank Casper who was at his absolute stunningly best for us that day. A wonderful performance from us.

Bad enough watching Burnley lose an FA Cup Semi-Final but think how annoyed you'd be if you'd walked it to Sheffield like this chap did.
Disappointed that he didn't walk to Swindon for the QF but respect his reasons for not doing so!

Re: On this day
Today marks 50 years since our last FA Cup Semi Final appearance. Alas, the pain from that day is still felt within me and many others. Back in 1974 the FA Cup was a revered, prestigious competition and we had a team genuinely capable of winning the cup. Confidence was high after thrashing Dirty Leeds the weekend before, but it wasn't to be, regrettably.
I struggle to believe 5 decades have now passed and we’re still awaiting an opportunity for Burnley to participate in another. We can but hope.
