England v Italy
Just the point needed for qualification for Euro 2024 in Germany.
Literally wouldn’t shock me if Gareth set up for a 0-0 draw. We should be ripping teams to shreds with the young talent we have at our disposal.
He plenty of plastic chairs being thrown in Germany that’s for sure.

Re: England v Italy
It would be foolish to criticise Southgate with his record but he really pushes his luck.
Starting with an off form Rashford and Maguire, Phillips and Stones who have had very little first team action this season.
He always seems to come up smelling of roses though , is tonight going to be any different ?

Put Saka in that team and it’s arguably our best eleven

Re: England v Italy
It makes me laugh how people criticise Southgate for picking out of form players but it’s alright when Vincent does it.

Id have Dunk over Maguire
Grealish over Rashford

Tbf, aside from Kane every other striker England have is mediocre at best, and the defence isn't that good either when put under pressure.ClaretsPadiham wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 6:15 pmWe should be ripping teams to shreds with the young talent we have at our disposal.
Re: England v Italy
We've struggled for centre backs since Terry and Ferdinand to be honest. Walker is right up there with the best defenders in the world though.
Personally think England have got more than enough quality to win a tournament, just maybe not the right character. You only need a couple of world class players and everyone else to be good players but also consistent performers imo. I think we fall short in the last bit. I think about managers like Fergie who used unfashionable players for specific roles and feel that if you built on a framework of Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Foden, Saka, Walker, Stones- you've enough quality to compete with the very best.
Re: England v Italy
Stones and Walker easily 2 of the best in the world.

Re: England v Italy
The way we’re being exploited on the counter goes some way to explain why Southgate plays two holding midfielders. Phillips seems to be far too advanced when we lose possession and Trippier is getting minimal help from Rashford.

Re: England v Italy
Phillips desperately needs to get out of Citeh and start playing regularly again. There wasn’t much in him and Rice when they broke through but he’s miles off Rice currently.
BTW. VAR is a Frenchman who was looking for any reason to overturn the pen

Trippier at fault for their goal - though why anyone would play a specialised RB at LB I really don't know.

Been poor defensively, doesn't know whether to go tight or stand off, Berardi is cutting in on his left and Trippier stands 5/6 yards off given him the option to shoot or pass to the overlap.dougcollins wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:45 pmTrippier at fault for their goal - though why anyone would play a specialised RB at LB I really don't know.
This is why Southgate won't win us anything we look good on the ball but soon as we're put under pressure we aren't organised as a team and look all over the show.
Shouldn't play two centre halves that have started one league game between them this season
Re: England v Italy
It’s a crucial game as against a friendly. Philips has very little game time at City, how’s he get to start. We lack some creativity in midfield, is Maddison on the bench, I’ve not seen the list.

Re: England v Italy
Probably because he’s not England’s best right back but is better than all of England’s left backs. The game has changed, players are versatile and able to adapt to different positions. Foden is a left footed player playing on the right and Rashford is a right footed player playing on the left.dougcollins wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:45 pmTrippier at fault for their goal - though why anyone would play a specialised RB at LB I really don't know.
Trippier is a battle-hardened, experienced player and someone who Southgate clearly rates highly enough to use in an unorthodox way. I don’t really see a problem with it.

Now another chance to see if GS can coach a lead. On the performance so far I’d take them to score again but the substitutions are vital.

Re: England v Italy
Glad to see the back of Stones, his position for the goal aside he's not played a pass that hasn't been bland and innocuous all evening, more than once allowing a stretched Italian side the few extra seconds needed to regroup
