Used to watch Alan West during the pre match warm up, doing fancy ball tricks. Wondered at the time if we had missed a trick by not keeping him. But this was Burnley, we had to sell players. Worse to come later with the sales of Dobson, Nulty and James.

Alan West was a magician at doing the ball tricks but he was also a very good footballer. He'd done really well and then lost his place at the end of 1971/72 and couldn't get back when we had that brilliant 1972/73 season when the midfield of Nulty, Dobson and Collins was just about perfect.

He went on to have a good career though including a top flight season with Luton.

I watched that recently. He might have lost his hair but he’s not lost the north west accent has he?

Alan West, a little like Geoff Nulty, was a very underrated player for us.
Not a fancy Dan, no frills, just got on with helping the team tick.

Great you tube interview thanks for sharing it

I just wish Bob Lord had been more generous it’s sad to hear Alan played in the reserves for two seasons because they wouldn’t pay him a higher salary
Also it’s also sad there is very little TV footage of Burnley in 70’s team under Jimmy Adamson
