Old football grounds book

Post by shulgin » Sun Oct 22, 2023 9:49 pm

Does anybody know any books containing photos of English football grounds before redevelopment?

Looking for one as a present but struggling to find one.

Any advice appreciated.

This is the original of this book (there have been revisions), the pictures in this book are mostly before redevelopments in this country.

Should be able to pick it up for little money online.

Yes, I used to have the Inglis book. Looking for something new as a present for a 70th birthday.

At that time Inglish went deeper into the the history and architecture of British football grounds that had ever been covered. Not so long later he produced a guide to the Stadiums of Europe.

He foresaw how stadiums would be in the future.

I had this Inglis book. It made grounds like Port Vale seem much more interesting then Man Utd. In any case it was the sort of ground we were visiting at the time!

Aerofilms Football Grounds from the Air - Then and Now (I've not seen this book. Other editions exist and it says they cover all 92 league grounds, presumably at the date of publication):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aerofilms-Foot ... 57&sr=1-10

You can see a lot/all/most of Aerofilms photos here:

Not 100% in line with the brief, but the books released by Vince Taylor who runs the Groundtastic Twitter account look good:

Recommend this, Simon Ingelis is a social historian of some standing.

I have the inglis book.

I also have an original copy of "the non-league grounds of England and Wales" which was accidentally published with the alphabetic order wrong - so they sent us another after they had corrected it. It was the best way to get directions to new grounds before you had Google maps, mobile phones etc etc. Loved it.
