Team v Villa

Post by Roosterbooster » Sat Dec 30, 2023 12:23 pm

Just over an hour and a half til it's announced.
Going for my 4th correct prediction in a row (and I think probably only my 4th correct prediction ever)

...................................Trafford
.........Vitinho..... O'Shae ......Beyer...... Taylor
....................Brownhill ...............Berge
Odobert...................................................... Tresor
............................Amdouni
...........................................Foster

Think you may well get your 4th in a row RB, although I hope for Ekdal and Redmond

Ekdal is injured according to Kompany

I can’t see it being anything other than that team, barring injuries we don’t know about. I too would like to see Redmond feature in games like this where perhaps a bit more ‘nous’ is required but can’t see it.

I would 100% start Redmond

Pau and Digne out do target their left side with ‘know how’

Drop Amdouni today and play Tresor in the ‘ten’

Trafford

Vitinho
O’Shea
Beyer
Taylor

Redmond
Brownhill
Berge
Odobert

Tresor

Foster

Well as long as Wolves don't know that, then I reckon its away win number 3!

If we line up with Tresor, Amdouni, and Odobert away at Villa we will deserve everything we get.

At the very least, Gudmundsson should come in for Tresor.

That from the Club beggars belief. Is no one checking it before it’s released? Sometimes we look like amateurs.

It’s been like that for a long long time. I’d had hoped that the new owners would be stamping this type of thing out. Anyway did I read somewhere that berge was suspended for today?

It’s a quickly corrected error - hardly one for the tower.

JBG in for Tresor i reckon, Odobert to the left. More solid away option from the start.

This is from Tony's preview so Berge is available.

"Kompany confirmed that Hjalmar Ekdal would again be ruled out and I think that was news to us with, I’m sure, no injury having previously been reported. He made no reference to any other player currently out injured so maybe we have a full squad to choose from other than Ekdal and Luca Koleosho."

BBC have news on Jack.

"Burnley have no new injury concerns, while Jack Cork is close to being fit."

You've got to think that Odobert attacking their left flank is the plan given Digne out? Right?

Who plays left to protect us from Cash?

Reckon if he's fit I'd play Ramsey off Foster and Odobert one side and JBG the other. Ramsey has hos limitations but when he played in a free role off a striker against United at home he gave us some running power and I'd like to see more of him in that role.

Ramsey never played a free role off a striker against United. He was one of the dual 8’s either side of Cullen.

Id expect him to get better numbers than Amdouni has so far as well.

I thought he was more of a 10 than an 8. Maybe an 8/10 combo. But was certainly the most advanced of the 3

Interesting you say that, all the passing & heat maps from that game show Brownhill as the furthest forward of the 3.

That was true in some respects but Ramsey had a lot more freedom to attack and Brownhill did a lot more sitting alongside Cullen, so not sure it is a distinction that makes a difference for these purposes.

Ramsey also played as a part of the front two in his cameo against West Ham in which he showed a willingness to stretch their backline in a way that Amdouni didn’t.

It’s a good shout.

I always found it strange that when squad numbers came in players were suddenly referred to as no 10s or no 8s or whatever. Is an 8/10 combo a no 9?

Maybe. But I don't think necessarily reflects things accurately. Brownhill does alot of the ball work when we are around the box, so will have high percentage passes on this area, even if he is deeper than others. And he also does alot of the pressing without the ball which gets him up the pitch. I suspect if you look at average positions when we are in possession, then Ramsey would have been more advanced than Brownhill

If I’m honest I would have liked to have seen Tresor or even Zaroury be given a chance with Foster

For me Amdouni has been really poor

Amdouni is a very talented lad but we’d surely be better going with a slightly more conservative side and staying in the game etc. said it before but he’d be a great sub to bring on and ‘go for it’ if the scores are level etc.

At some point he's going to do something memorable which will be considered to justify keeping faith with him. The question is whether it will have already cost more points than we earn in that moment. My view is he's not contributing enough generally to justify it.

Really don't see the point of having JBG wide at all. After establishing he's better central at his age and signing 100 wingers, he still ends up starting there. Crazy.

I get your point but I actually think it’s a good move. He’s a lot better than any else at keeping a shape and defending.

Think it’s going to be needed today if we are to get anything

100% correct and also not an ounce of fight in his belly, far too much of a luxury player, we need battle and commitment till the end of the season.

I would have liked to have seen Trésor as the ‘10’/dropping a tad deeper and Odobert & Redmond on the wings.

Think we’d be able to play/progress up the pitch better and have more threat in behind

He’s clearly talented but he’s a player that I just can’t see where he fits. Every other player you know exactly what they are and what they are contributing. With Amdouni he just seems be a bit of a mixture and I actually think it’s hindering his game.

For what it’s worth I think we have better options to accompany Foster

I don't think we did establish he was better central, at least not in the Premier League when the onus is more on defending and tracking runners than dominating the game, and the system/set up reflects that truth.

He plays that wide role better than anyone else in this squad.

Really don't see the point of having JBG wide at all. After establishing he's better central at his age and signing 100 wingers, he still ends up starting there. Crazy.
Interestingly Kompany basically admitted he got it wrong with so many wingers, without explicitly saying it. At a presser recently he mentioned how he thought JBG would be more central this season. In reality he’s the only ‘wide’ player with genuine physicality and PL defensive nous, which is what he’s in these teams mainly for. He should have recognised it was needed at this level.
