Re: Joey’s in bother again
Quite agree.
Yank is derived from the native pronunciation of English, Yanglish… Yank and has been used by American’s to describe themselves since at least the later eighteenth century
I can see those from the Southern states being more offended than those in the north, especially those who prefer to be seen as Johnny Reb.
Describing ‘yank’ as a racial slur is strange in the extreme.

American isn't a race, but I suppose any term used in a derogatory way against a race of people could be classed as racist.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 8:52 pmQuite agree.

Didn’t the North describe themselves as “Yankees” during the civil war? I could understand some from the southern states taking offence at the term if so.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 8:52 pmQuite agree.

The main reason it isn’t a racial slur is that Americans are not / have never been a homogenous race (given the term is never used to mean “Native Americans”)

Yeah. So my point is, if someone was to use yank as a derogatory slur towards American people then it could be considered as bigoted, despite the word ‘yank’ not itself being considered offensive.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 8:58 pmThat is why we have the word Bigoted… when it is not racism.

Billy Yank v Johnny Reb. (My hobby away from research is very sad… American history pre the war is my busman’s holiday) . This is where it became touchy term… an artificial division between rural and industrial regions aka the Mason Dixon Line.Greenmile wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 8:57 pmDidn’t the North describe themselves as “Yankees” during the civil war? Not really any such thing as homogenous… it’s all nonsense. Those born on the west of England arrived from the Iberian coast… those on the east coast from France and Scandinavia… and that’s before the Romans got here! The ‘native American’s’ Wandered over land bridges and ice from Asia (southern) and various migrations from the tundra (north).
We are a great mash of humanity in the west, always have been. Racism is a nonsense created by those wishing to cause division. Bigotry towards those nations that in reality dominate you is healthy, if delusional.

Totally agree. It may seem semantic, even pedantic but when someone is accusing another of something - I for one check my vocabulary very carefully.

Crowdfunding a legal defence by promising all proceeds to charity is an unusual move. Especially when you've clearly and openly done what you're accused of.

Attributing a noun before ‘nonce’ suggests he was just being offensive instead of throwing around the accusation.
It's like Inbetweeners’ ‘bus ******’
Sticks and stones and all that. But if someone with the number of followers and reach of Bartons called me a bike-nonce, I'd be fighting back too. I don't want to be associated with that type of weird behaviour on our public roads.

Hopefully we get back to some kind of normality fairly soon and we look back at these times as "what were we thinking?"

I'm not diluting it. I just think it's all childish and stupid. If Vine wasn't taking legal action I wouldn't even considering the image of Jeremy Vine hanging outside schools and trying to entice young children with his bike for his own gratification.
Instead I'd be knowing that Joey Barton is just a football-nonce

Defamation/libel awards can prove expensive, not to mention the costs. Also, high profile people tend to be awarded much higher payouts - damage to reputation etc.

Re: Joey’s in bother again
I don't think Joey has a leg to stand on legally. I hope that I am wrong. It just shows the culture of our sue anybody society. This is what Barton claimed earlier in 1 of his tweets. If it is true it shows Vine to be the disgusting slimeball that he is. This is also the same Vine who called Alex Bellfield (another absolute bellend btw) the Jimmy Saville of trolling. A little bit of the pot calling the kettle. So Vine is calling Bellfield the nonce of trolling but doesn't like being called a bike nonce. Anyway this is what Barton claimed earlier today on Twitter.
So to fill you all in…
His lawyers asked originally for £50k to charity and all his costs and apology.
I offered to give £10k to a charity. Apologise and delete the said tweets.
I then got another letter wanting £100k after
@LozzaFox
had his case in the high courts. (And Eni Aluko’s letter from same firm of lawyers!)
I offered him £25k to a charity. To put it to bed.
I’ve now just had a claim through for over £250k but interestingly it’s no longer to go to his charity.
Needless to say, I’m no longer willing to negotiate. How can a man who attacks you on national TV get upset when the joke turned on him.
What an embarrassment of a man.

Re: Joey’s in bother again
Alex Bellfield was a campaign of harassment toward Jeremy Vine, not just an exchange on Twitter. Vine is right to nip the issue in the bud, and Barton should be grown-up enough to apologise. All in all, it's just another dumpster fire from Twitter.
I blocked Joey Barton a long time ago though. Grade-A bellend.

That's why I put 'Barton 'claimed' to have letters from Vine's lawyers. If he is lying it will come out in court. If people are naive enough to crowdfund a bonanza fest for Barton that will make an odious creature such as Vine and a bunch of unscrupulous lawyers even more wealthy then more fool them.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2024 6:29 pmI'd be reluctant to rely too heavily on what Barton says about the person suing him while trying to cobble together legal fees tbh

Barton’s a millionaire, though he may have to be if he goes the libel route , bearing in mind Vine & Aluko will likely be crowd funded and legal fees in libel cases are eye watering .ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2024 6:29 pmI'd be reluctant to rely too heavily on what Barton says about the person suing him while trying to cobble together legal fees tbh
He’s clearly been advised to put the “ offers “ into the public domain , but I can’t see anyone settling for less than 100k. It’s ludicrous and would have been laughed out of court yrs ago . But if Barton chooses to live by “ silly public name calling in the modern era” he may just have to “ die” for it as well .

Typically when sued a defence tactic is to counter sue. In the end, the legal fees on both sides rack up so much that each party has to fold. The winners are the lawyers so that go fund me page is basically a donation to Barton’s expensive lawyers.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 8:55 amI've just had a look.
