Adding or taking away from a contract.

Hi, I have BT b/b and tv packages,I am now paying over a £100 a month for this,is it possible to say drop the Sky sports package out of the list of things I get ,or will I be tied into the packages I started with?
It really is getting out of hand the cost of b/b and tv.
Any help would be appreciated TIA.

Not sure you will get the answer you need on here as we don’t know the specific terms of your contract. Surely contacting BT would be your best port of call.

Just say you can’t afford it, you’ve had change of circumstances.
I’m sure they’d rather keep a customer on reduced terms than lose one.
You might have to lay on a bit thick though, if you’re tied in

As said, would all depend on the t&c in the contract

If you’re out of the 12/18mth period initially signed to then it shouldn’t be an issue

And even if not out of that period, still contact them anyway and say it’s too much/change of circumstances and need to reduce

The answer is to ring them and lay it on that you’re facing hardship and need help. Often they try to find another package that you can afford rather than lose you. Sky have occasionally asked me “what can you afford” I reply with next to nothing so whilst I’m weighing up priority outgoings I need to see what’s the cheapest deal you can offer me, I can then go away and think about whether I can afford it as something has to give. Good luck with it.

I don’t know about BT, but Sky have a live chat function which I’d much prefer to use than waiting on hold and being passed from pillar to post.

Thanks the tv contract has 4 months to run and the b/b one 5 months I will cancel it all then I was just wondering if I could alter the package to make it cheaper till then

I’ve found customer service at most big organisations has been the absolute pits since covid. Almost like there was an excuse for a drop in standard and no desire to get back to that level. It feels like I’m often connected to someone who is working from home too which I presume is a factor.

That said, I would just leave my laptop on whilst doing something else and wait the 1hr15.

As said above, if you tell them that you can no longer afford it they will in my experience drop the price. In your case there is a service that uses a (human) assistant to talk to BT on your behalf.

I expect that they will put you on a new contract though, so it’s a good idea to check prices so you know what you can pay elsewhere and therefore whether to accept their offer or see the contract out and then move.

I reduced my Sky costs a bit by just having Sky Football and HD ,it’s not a lot but it helps,and there’s always a Firestick which is perfectly league to own and you can always get it loaded( so I’m told)

I've been a customer for donkey's years and was paying way over the odds. (About £140 p.m.) That's for TV, all sports channels, internet, and broadband. I fixed up to go to BT for £80 p.m., and I meant it; before the BT notice period was up, someone from Virgin rang me and I told him that I was so fed up with the standard of Virgin service that I would only stay if they cut it to £60. More than that, and it was going to be BT.

They cut it to £61.

Though of course that was on the phone, It would be a nightmare for a deaf person to try it.

On the other hand, they may be slightly more concerned if they saw a perception that they were mistreating someone who's disabled. You could play on that, within reason, if you don't have any moral objection (which I know some people might, though not me!)

With Virgin Media, if you are on a contract, the basic contract - (broadband, land line, TV) is the contract but additions, which can be added at anytime such as Sky Sports, are not, so one month's notice can be given to cancel these. My guess is BT and Sky are similar but I don't know. Virgin are quite easily contactable by phone or online chat but whether you can get the answers you want is another matter. Currently their Virgin users 150 help telephone line is free to call.

The contract itself is in my view not a good contract from the customer's point of view because Virgin can increase the prices - it's not a fixed price contract. They tell you they increase prices in March at the inflation rate plus 3.9%. This in fact is now the standard for all the contracts I've seen for these sort of services.

I was asking an obvious question and was wondering what their response was.

However, there are a number of options for you if you are hard of hearing.

use live chat or email them.

If they are not your preferred methods try this;

Textphone: Dial 18001 0800 800 150 to connect to a textphone number.

TextNumbers: Dial 18002 followed by the full phone number (including the dialling code) to connect to a deaf or speech-impaired person and a Relay Assistant. TextNumbers start with 03306 or 07777.

NGT: BT has launched NGT, a revamped version of their text relay service which allows people with speech or hearing impairments to hold real-time phone conversations.
