Cowards

Post by Blatherwickstattoo » Sat Feb 17, 2024 7:02 pm

I’ve seen some poor teams in my 35 years watching Burnley but I don’t think I’ve see a team as cowardly and naive as this one. Under coyle / laws we managed 30 points and this side will be lucky to get 20. Absolutely flabbergasted by VK and his stubborn ways after such a brilliant season last season.

Are we too loyal to give him another crack at it next season ? The trigger happy pace has gone quiet (dyche had a more points when he was sacked)

I genuinely feel we have a board who have no idea about football.

Team full of kids with the hope we make profit isn’t going to bring success.

Fans silent on it as most aren’t arsed too.

Worrying times

I agree with all of that apart from most fans not being arsed. I certainly am and every sensible clarets fan I know care too. Keeping quiet doesn't mean fans aren't arsed, it means we know better than to post things that simply aren't right straight after a heavy defeat. All the frustration and criticism should be levelled at the manager and the board. The players we've invested in simply haven't been good enough. And whether we think VK should be here next season or not, he's signed a contract to 2028 and our board think the sun shines out of his backside, so yes he'll get another crack at it next season regardless.

It will bring success in the form of profits though, and that is all that matters to those in charge.

Is the gulf getting too big from the championship to the prem now,the 3 worst from last season that went down are the three best by far in the championship. Also the 3 that went up are all favourites to go back down.Luton only out of it on Everton’s deduction, but still likely to go.maybe it does take a bit if shithousery Luton have put more fight than us up with two heavyweights up front.

The thing about buying young players with potential, is that they must break into a team of men and grow.

We sold the men and just have kids with no umidea, when the going gets tough....every week.

See my post on the “shambles” thread. These are by and large very young players. I don’t blame them. Mistakes have been made with putting this squad together. They’ve not been set up to succeed.

Unfortunately getting battered is damaging their confidence, obviously.
It has nothing to do with bravery.

Coward is too strong a word.

No one can defend today but it wasn't cowardly.

I'm not sure cowards is the right word, but this is the worst top-flight Burnley side in my life as a fan. I first went to TM in 1962/63: Burnley 4 Fulham 0.

It was embarassing and spineless. Had we lost but everyone given 90% or more of what Fofana provided, I could have lived with it

it's not cowardly, it's a bunch of young strangers being asked to play in the toughest surroundings without a hope in hell. They just look completely lost and in any walk of life when you get things going against you (results in this case) every single week your head will naturally drop. Mental toughness is easier for some than others and very often it comes with age and experience. To me today there was a complete lack of fight, I think it's been kicked out of them and that worries me a lot for next season. We will need some experienced players or we won't get out of the Championship.

I don’t think cowards is too strong a word. Just watching MOTD, Brownhill turns his back on the first goal and Taylor on the fourth. It happens with different players nearly every week. They are a bunch of gutless mard arses who would rather concede a goal than get hurt by the ball.

I agree with most of that.
We are a club in massive transition, far too many loans both in and out.
A settled squad for a season, even if it's in the Championship, is what's needed.

Yes, it’s disappointing but no so than losing against Liverpool or Manchester City.

Hope is a wonderful thing but fans need to be realistic.

You can dress it up as much as you like. Whenever Arsenal have come to Turf Moor, I've always fancied us to get something… even if we rarely did, I’d see us give it a good go.

This week, when people asked who Burnley had this weekend, I playfully replied - “Defeat to Arsenal”. I went through the motions today. I came away disappointed even though I knew there wasn't a chance of a result.

I've not felt this unenthused about Burnley FC - probably since the winless streak during Cotterill's days. It was perhaps that Luton Town match when it rained, and nothing happened. There was no hope.

There was no hope today either; it's been a dreadful season.

I'd argue today felt like it was the most in form Arsenal team we've played in the last decade. Doesn't hide our inadequacies but we weren't facing the 'normal' Arsenal, they are bang in form having won their first 5 games of the year for the first time in their history scoring 21 goals in the process. Every chance we will lose at Palace so I'm not using it as an excuse for us being bobbins though.

I think the alarming issue is Arsenal barely got out of second gear and put us to the sword.

Apart from maybe a couple of our players I really can’t see any club wanting to buy them, I just haven’t seen an improvement either in quality of player or playing style. I’m not calling for VK out but we look completely lost.

O'Shea, Koleosho definitely improved (kolo till injury) - rest of the youngsters don't look to have improved have they?

The PL is just not the place to bed so many youngsters in.

I'm sure calling our 'kids' a bunch of cowards will do them a world of good. Maybe these 'apathetic fans' you talk of can shout COWARDS at them for 90 minutes +. That should sort it.

You seem to be in knots over this. First you call them out cowards, when pulled up on this, you say we shouldn't be wrapping them up in cotton wool. Then you contradict yourself by saying it's not their fault, even though you started a 'cowards' thread. Now we find out that in your book, it's fine to condemn them as cowards in an online forum, but you wouldn't do the same to their faces.

Agreed, we were very fortunate to only concede 5. They could have hit us for ten if they had taken said chances.

I labelled Trafford a coward a couple of weeks ago and was shot down by the usual crowd. Seems more and more people are finally waking up to what i’ve been telling them for months.
It seems more and more people see that there is a case for starting Muric over Trafford. There is and has been for a while. But I would have thought the majority of those same people would at the same time refrain from thinking it's reasonable to distastefully label one of our own young players a coward.

Trafford isn't a coward, in fact I would suggest exactly the opposite. The poor lad is being picked to play every week and yet he still goes out and does his absolute best and shies away from nothing. He isn't faking injuries or trying to get away, he is just going out and doing his best. Given how his confidence must be affected by everything, he is still there actually trying (something I am not sure we can say for other players).

It's on VK for picking him.

I am a Muric in person BTW, but saying Trafford is a coward is bonkers. He is so young and is still trying despite his short-comings.

I really hope he succeeds and think he will, just from the resilience he has shown so far, but right now, give him a break.

When I called him a coward - it was in relation to him closing his eyes when he comes to flap for a cross at corners or is bullied in his own six yard box.

Apologies, I missed the context there.

Cowards may be a little harsh but what's clear is that if we go into next season with this mentality and seeming fragility we're in deep doo doo.

There has never not been a case. Traff has done literally nothing for the jersey.

I think a better description would have been a softie? Mind you some people on here might take offence at calling someone soft in today’s current climate. :o
