Are we being out run?

Post by steve1264b » Wed Feb 28, 2024 5:34 pm

People keep saying there is no fight no effort.

What are the stats on our mileage compared to other teams?

This is up there with those threads that are about a certain topic but with a couple of words describing what the title is alluding to - and thats it

Then, it's up to the reader to leave the forum and find out what the topic is actually about.

Would actually love to know this myself.

All feeds in to the sweat on the shirt discussion so I had a look. I have no idea how to use stats websites or where to look.

I did find some data from earlier in the season where we compared pretty favourably in ‘kilometres run’. It was a number for each club and wasn’t in a graph or anything so was hard to compare but a quick glance suggested we were top quarter/third.

Think that was from Oct/Nov time and could all have changed by now. If anyone has a comparison it’d be good to know.

From a rough look online this was one of the best stats analysis that I could find that was also pretty easy to use.

Doesn't quite have what you're looking for but there is some interesting data:

According to Opta Analyst, we are poor on high turnovers which is a measure of pressure applied to the opposition. 15.6 ppda which explained means "PPDA is the number of opposition passes allowed outside of the pressing team's own defensive third, divided by the number of defensive actions by the pressing team outside of their own defensive third. A lower figure indicates a higher level of pressing, while a higher figure indicates a lower level of pressing."

There's no edit function.

It looks like the data for running is an end of season metric.

High turnover is about work rate in the opposition half. We look passive a lot and I'd point at this statistic partially to mean what I think of when talking about Amdouni, Tresor and Odobert.

Outplayed rather than outrun, I'd suggest.

Would it not be reasonable to suggest that sides that keep the ball better would have to run less?

It's simply yet another topic on how poor we have been, but slighly changing the narrative - so it can function as a brand new post

The OP has been wanting to post it for days now, but hasnt been able to just word it right to make it look brand new

Ok sorry if i misled people but i remember Ten Haag saying utd has run less and they had to turn up on sunday to make up the difference.

Im 59 dont understand football data, i just assumed you could look at each match and seen total distances run.

If you cant you cant.

I remember that a few seasons back, in Sean Dyche's team, we had some great runners. Was it Scotty Arfield who always had the best distance covered stats?

Ignore the unpleasant replies you’ve had. Must be some people’s time of the month.

It was a perfectly reasonable OP asking if anyone had information you were looking for.

Not sure how they work it all out but we could have run the most miles in the league but if it’s running chasing shadows I don’t think it means that much.

This is more general:

https://football-observatory.com/IMG/sites/mr/mr68/en/

Spanish teams for the period covered ran more than English teams. General perception is our game is more about physical attributes, the Spanish game slower and better ball retention. So, evidence counters that. Only one study etc...

This is also interesting: "At the level of match results, players from winning teams tend to cover more distance sprinting (>25.2 km/h) than their opponents. However, this primarily reflects the greater tendency for teams taking the lead to counterattacking and not a significant gap between players of the competitions analysed from a running abilities’ perspective." We don't often get the opportunity to counter attack because our error count is so large that we often chasing the game.

You think back players like Airfield,Boyd and Hendricks who used to get pelters on here but would walk into this team.

Could you just run that by me again? You lost me after ‘we are poor’. I thought you were talking about car tyre pressure.

Hendrick criminally under appreciated. Ran his socks off - also a young lad when he signed for us at 24.

You don’t need fancy data to answer your question. Your eyes should tell you.
Outrun, out fought, out skilled, out game planned, out scored, out played. Out managed.
All of the above.

Yep and if people think JT gets scapegoated now then let's cast our minds back to Hendrick. He got blamed for every defeat and every win was nothing to do with him.
