England squad

Post by fidelcastro » Thu Mar 14, 2024 7:58 pm

I'm one of the few who still defends Southgate, but Anthony Gordon?!!

Friendlies, no issue having a look at different players. It's when he starts Jordan Henderson against a 'Malta' type team instead of Phil Foden that my toys get hurled out of the pram !

If they need a fall guy, Gordon's your man.

Literally.

Playing regularly and having a decent season = worth a look by the England manager

Decent enough player but his incessant diving and play acting lets him down. Grealish was the same but became acceptable as he matured.

Tarkowski teaches Braithwaite and the wet behind the ears guy gets the job! Southgate is obsessed with young players who are yet to have all the ingredients.

I like the fact that Kalvin Phillips has more chance of being selected when he’s not playing.

Branthwaite has arguably been one of the CBs of the season

Not sure how anyone can criticise that decision

Southgate previously selects experienced players not playing or out of form, for qualifying & tournament games, and gets criticised

Southgate now selects uncapped players, for playing regularly and having good a season, for a couple of meaningless friendlies, and gets criticised

He really can’t win can he

I’m not overly worried about the AG selection, it’s his reliance on the likes of Maguire, Henderson and a woefully out of form and ineffective Rashford that should worry everyone who still has any interest left in the national team. Well, that and the fact he’ll do his best to stifle any creativity these lads are capable of.

It’s the nature of the beast that we won’t all agree on his selections, but your first paragraph tells you everything you need to know about GS and his old boys club.

It's a particularly poor set of defenders.

Branthwaite is worth a look - he just looks like another steady eddie for me though. The next in the long line of English CB that Dyche has developed, but who will ultimately be found wanting when exposed to a more open formation.
Gomez looks good when he plays CB with VVD and awful when he doesn't.
Konsa and Dunk are nothing more than a stop gaps.
Maguire tends to do well for England but everyone knows he's limited.
Stones is better as a CDM than a CB as he's prone to making errors when he's the last man.

It feels a long time since we were choosing from the likes of Campbell, Ferdinand and Terry.

This really stands out for me.
We have probably our most potent and dangerous midfield and attack we have had in a long time, maybe ever.
Then you look at the defence and gk. It’s polar opposites and the reason we won’t be winning any tournaments.
The way Southgate plays, we will be a really boring frustrating team that does not impose and concedes really sloppy/easy goals.

I still haven’t forgiven him (GS) for his naïvety shown in the second half of the Italy match.

Interesting that he kept picking Phillips while sat on City's bench with the stupid argument he had never let England down so he gets picked made by Southgate, then when he is playing for a club he gets dropped and told his club form isn't currently good enough.

Has he? I genuinely don't know because I don't watch football on tv most of the time. Do Everton have a watertight defence that justifies his selection? Or is Southgate keeping those loveable Everonians sweet so he can sit safely in the seat Kenwright used to use?

So basically GS has pocked the best English CHs?

That squad doesn't strike me as being particularly young, more of a blend really.

Agree

The Everton fans I know have already resigned themselves to the fact he's going to a top 6 club for £30m plus in the summer

They think he's going all the way to the top

No arguement with Gordon as he has been playing well this season. Some games I have watched he has been unplayable at times.

If they're the best we have on offer it's a poor do, that's all I'll say.
