As an androgynous life form I wouldn’t want to be Man of the Match and it would upset me. I wouldn’t play in a mens league though. Nothing wrong with this terminology for this match. Changes are being made by organisations to try and be relevant and up to date but they are not thought out properly.

It is important to some people though and they do have a purpose.
I imagine they are. What is the purpose in todays age, purely out of interest?

In any case, I didn’t bring this irrelevant comparison to the table and haven’t suggested we do away with people’s titles.

Why would they be? Do you realise how ridiculous these comparisons are with using the term ‘player of the match’ instead of ‘man of the match’. Have a word with yourself.

going to make my tea now but last comment on this ridiculous subject:

changing 'man of the match' to 'person of the match' is a misguided quest for inclusivity. it aids nobody and doesn't do anything apart from annoy strange people like me.

i'm as liberal as it comes but throwing the baby out with the bathwater springs to mind.

now for some pasta.

Entertaining thread.

50 posts about football and 150 posts about a misguided attempt in society at large to remove all definitions of a woman / girl. Now we have no women of the match, gender neutral toilets, no safe spaces for women, no fair competition for women, no “she” allowed in emails in favour of “their”, the word “mother” replaced by “birthing parent” by the Bank of England. Need I go on?

Nothing to do with politics either for once, just misguided craziness. Why? Because it doesn’t do women and girls any favours. They are a extremely special part of our species with qualities different to men and they should be celebrated as such, rather than erased from the dictionary.

That’s why Riley in (his?) attempts in this thread are well meaning, but, I am sure, wrong.

It is always entertaining to see how these threads can get so odd topic!

For my two pence worth, Riley uses the argument that its the right thing to do - well who decides that? People on that side of the debate just decide for everyone that they are right and anyone else is wrong.

Not that I am overly bothered, but calling it 'man of the match' in a men's football match doesn't sound wrong to me

How is this an example of society removing all definitions of a woman/girl? We are simply talking about changing the term ‘man of the match’ to ‘player of the match’ so that the all-encompassing term can be used for people of all age and gender. What an overreaction.

MAN of the match is an award for the best man on the pitch in a game with 22+ men playing, no need to change it at all

Well it already has been changed. I’m quite aware why the award was called man of the match, and it does what it says on the tin in men’s football. But the term cannot be applied to women’s or kid’s football so it’s just an attempt to use an inclusive, one size fits all term - and obviously not an attempt to remove all definitions of women or girls as was bizarrely claimed by Crosspool.

They can't suspend the league, I mean where would English sides send their underperforming players then?

sad thing is, i bet not a single woman asked for the terminology to be changed. I don't get why either way offends anybody but it didn't need changing.
