Re: 1966
Great pic, and certainly worthy of a comment......That was one of the 29 league goals that Irvine scored in that '65/'66 season that I referred to on another thread. It was in a sequence of 6 consecutive games in which Willie scored, hitting the net 9 times in those games......the man just loved to score goals.

Re: 1966
I see there's a headline lower down on the page letting us know that the Manchester United youngster, George Best, passed Busby's test. Maybe it was a test at that United party in Belgrade mentioned later in the article, where the senior pros set youngsters initiation tests and they let Matt know.
Anyone know what the test might have been?

Scored just one week before he broke the post war record for league goals in a season at Villa.
The greatest goal scorer I have ever seen play for Burnley and am ever likely to.

George had been struggling with cartilage problems for a while, in the end he missed several games at the end of the season when it was decided he needed an operation.Claret Toni wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 3:45 pmI see there's a headline lower down on the page letting us know that the Manchester United youngster, George Best, passed Busby's test. Sometimes thought had he been English he would have missed England's World Cup win summer 1966 due to the injury.
He was ok again at the start of 1966/67.
