How we get the ball into the box

Post by aggi » Sat Apr 20, 2024 12:12 pm

Was reading an Athletic article on how teams most commonly get the ball into the box, e.g. playmaker playing through to centre forward, cross coming in, keeper launching it.

This was the Burnley section ...

Not enough data to really judge – Burnley
Sorry! Burnley’s numbers are so low that it’s just not worthy of discussion. Vitinho has played the ball from outside the box into Jacob Bruun Larsen inside the box a total of four times all season, with no obvious pattern to the passes.

That is so poor at this stage of the season. The summary could be, tippy tappy passes around the edge of the box until we lose it and then get counter attacked.

With so much of the game now given over to analysis and stats, having no readable data is hilariously concerning.

That’s a shocking appraisal. We’ve played wingers all season and all of Koleosho, JBL & Odobert have put some top crosses in. Sadly our cutting edge have found various ways to screw it up.
My biggest complaint is fannying around for the perfect situation to cross. There isn’t one. Just get the ball in there and see what develops.

Not in any way denying we are ****, but is this not just an example of why you can't make sensible conclusions about football from data alone? Anyone who has watched 33 Burnley games this season knows how we get the ball into the box.

Another reason why not playing Rodriguez has hindered us.

People can talk about individual errors, lack of fitness, suicidal passes, lack of effort etc etc but the main reason for us to be in the position that we are is because we are completely toothless. The last few games have really highlighted this - we’ve been in the games and had plenty of possession but ultimately we create very little.

It's not really the main reason though is it. We have scored enough to be able to stay up but we've given away goals all season. I'm not sure how you've managed to watch us all season and come to the conclusion that our attacking threat is our main problem.

This thread is a classic example of people jumping on a negative without any context.

The article (which I’ve actually read) is about common combinations ie the most frequently combining pairs in each team to get a ball into the box. For example Odegaard to Saka is Arsenals.

This doesn’t mean that Burnley haven’t been inadequate this season in the attacking third. Of course they have, but I’m not sure the article itself is any more than copy filler.

Cox has managed to find “patterns” from teams who have scored less or not many more goals than us this season, so having a pattern or most frequent combo doesn’t necessarily indicate an effective attack.

True but it does raise the point as to why we don't have a recognise pattern of play upfront this season, in contrast to last.

You can have any opinion you want.

If we’d have had more bite we’d have beaten Wolves, Everton and Brighton recently - despite errors. We’re toothless.
