1980 Umbro Top
Love this! Anyone that’s bought one, what’s the sizing like? Haven’t bought a shirt for years but might have to get this one. Old badge and no sponsor. Perfect.
Re: 1980 Umbro Top
It’s a thing of beauty and is definitely on my shopping list.

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
It depends on the material for me. I fancied the old Admiral '82 England shirt but the official remakes were big heavy things made with modern material and to modern sizes for fatties. Saw them on others and they looked awful.
No idea what the Burnley one is like but if its the old tight fitting material then it would look well smart. Id prefer the yellow '82 POCO top personally

Would look much better with a Chinese betting company plastered across the front.

Exactly my reaction. It’s the Spall Orient shirt. There should be Umbro flashing on the sleeves I think for starters.
After saying that, I might treat myself, lovely shirt.

It’s practically the 2000 home shirt (first division one under stan with no sponsor).

The 1980 shirt had the diamonds on the shoulders and sleeves. Yes, nice shirt but it isn’t a 1980 retro shirt.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Mar 13, 2021 8:34 pmExactly my reaction. It’s the Spall Orient shirt. There should be Umbro flashing on the sleeves I think for starters.

Seen photos showing the umbro diamonds down the sleeves
Re: 1980 Umbro Top
If you zoom in you can see the umbro logos down the sleeves. Looks a nice design but the material looks crap to me. Like the one CFC referenced above from 2000. That had horrible material that plucked every time the wind blow.

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
Two photos here. Not sure of the years. But one with the diamonds on the shoulder, one without. But the Umbro logo is also the wrong colour. Should be blue, not gold.
Re: 1980 Umbro Top
I have an original of this Umbro shirt in long sleeve. The Umbro sign is gold and the logo and badge are printed on this. On the match worn/player shirts the Umbro sign was blue and the logo and badge were stitched. As ClaretTony mentions, on the match worn/player shirts the diamonds are on the shoulder/the claret part of the shirt; on my replica they stop at the shoulder
They weren't exact replicas like today.
Anyone remember the 87-88 shirts? Even the first 11 shirts were a right mis match. Some had the Multipart sponsor, others didn't, some had the Burnley crest, others didn't. I have the home and away shirt and the logo (a giant 'E') is half way down the chest on one and almost touching the collar on the other!

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
You can see my original one at the bottom right......
Re: 1980 Umbro Top
Shirts with no sponsors always look better. Just looking at the shirts above, it's striking how much the colour of the actual claret has changed from year to year.
If you were to market Burnley globally then the colouring is very important, what would the pantone colour be? Do we stick to the same colour, or does it matter if there are slight differences? Quite interesting thea the FUN88 top looks similar in colour to the classic Endsleigh 91/92 championship top.

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
There’s no real consistency in the shirts we wore back then. As you can see from this 80-81 programme cover there was a version of this shirt that the first team wore without the diamonds on the shoulder.Chuckypad wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 8:32 amI have an original of this Umbro shirt in long sleeve. Re: 1980 Umbro Top
I think some are being rather picky as to the shirts looks/comparisons
The diamonds are clearly present on the sleeves. Wrong colour for the logo on the chest? At least it has a logo, a lot of retro replica shirts these days don't even have one

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
I've ordered one of these 'new' ones, and like the post above I have the original replica with the yellow Umbro badge (kids size as I was only 9 at the time), so it's exactly like that one.
After seeing the suggestion that this new version wasn't an accurate replica I thought I'd check further :
a) I dug out my old shirt from 79-80 and confirmed it was indeed the same - Umbro tape on the sleeves only and Yellow Umbro badge. Only difference to the actual playing shirt was the colour of the Umbro badge - blue on the players shirt.
b) I revisited some of my old programmes, and also checked a couple of the games highlights on Youtube from 79-80 and 80-81.
I'm certain that in the 79-80 season the shirt the players wore only had the Umbro tape on the sleeves and not the shoulders. (season we had blue shorts and socks)
Then in the 80-81 season we switched back to white shorts and socks, and whilst there are a couple of stock photos in the programme of players wearing shirts with the tape on the shoulders again I don't think we wore that shirt in the home games.
To add to the confusion the artist's image on the front of the programmes in 79-80 shows a player wearing a shirt with the taping on the shoulders, which wasn't the case!
And then in 80-81 there's a couple of squad photos where on one presumably pre-season we've got blue socks on, but shirts with taping on the sleeves only, then a photo I presume later in 80-81 with the white shorts and socks, and the players are actually wearing different shirts - 5 or 6 with the taping on the shoulders and the rest with it only on the sleeves!
At the end of the day I think it looks great, and I still think it's an accurate representation of what the players were wearing in 79-80 and 80-81, apart from the colour of the Umbro badge.
I just want Umbro to produce a replica of the Yellow away shirt from that time now!

79-80 programme with the artists image not accurately representing the worn shirt!
Not something I'd ever noticed before this debate came up!

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
I’ve been looking at buying a logo free top for a while; I really do not like being an advertising board for betting companies. Also, I wanted one from the club as I preferred my money to go to the club rather than a repro company (just my thing I’m afraid). Anyway, saw the shirt on the clubs twitter feed on Friday and I think it looks superb. I fought the club’s shop website (it really is shocking) and ordered the shirt. Excellent delivery service meant that the shirt arrived this morning along with a complementary Burnley FC 2020/21 annual; I’ll pass that on to my grandson
Here’s a picture of the shirt. Regardless of how truly authentic it is, I think it looks great. This is size L, which is what I normally buy club shirts in and it fits perfectly.

Looks brilliant. And actually does look very much like the shirt of the time. Which shows the clubs marketing up again as you would never know that was the shirt that was hidden away on the website.ICL wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 9:34 amI’ve been looking at buying a logo free top for a while; I really do not like being an advertising board for betting companies. Mine also arrived this morning from the club. Shirt looks great. Really pleased with it.
Added to the authentic Umbro 'V' replica I've now got 'grown-up' versions of the first 2 shirts I had when I was a kid.

Got mine today, absolutely love it.
Also got the annual with mine, wasn't sure they'd messed up or not but evidently not.

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
They’ve released another retro replica today. Away kit from 1988 (without the SPALL branding). This was actually the first away kit I had as a kid.
I’ve not bought one yet but it’s good to see the retail department working in bringing the different retro ranges and shirts out.

Re: 1980 Umbro Top
Received this beauty in the post today. Now on sale from the club shop so I got my order in. In hindsight I could have called in to the shop before the game on Sunday....
Nearly a year ago I said on this thread I just wanted them to produce the yellow shirt now as it's one that I'd always wanted. Brings back memories of my first years as a Claret from 1977 onwards, watching the likes of Kindon, James, Ingham, Noble.....
A picture of it being modelled appeared on a promotional tweet from the club shop a couple of months ago on Twitter, but when I and a couple of others enquired when it was going on sale we got no response.
I'm presuming you couldn't buy these away shirts in the late 70s (can't remember as I was only 9 )

Liking the yellow kit, certainly are better without the sponsor
