Burnley Crowned Champions of England
GAME 42: Burnley v Sunderland, Turf Moor, Saturday 7th May 1921
The curtain fell on Burnley’s epic season with a home match against Sunderland at Turf Moor on Saturday the 7th of May 1921. With goalkeeper Jerry Dawson injured, Len Moorwood making his first team debut, deputised in goal. Todmorden born former Burnley half-back Jack Mitton turned out for the Wearsiders. The Clarets outplayed Sunderland for the first 20 minutes, with Bob Kelly and Billy Nesbitt showing some beautiful football skills and it was Nesbitt who opened the scoring for Burnley on ten minutes. Half way through the first half, Sunderland came more into the game and equalised though captain Charlie Buchan on 30 minutes with a defensive mix-up, Buchan simply tapping-in past Moorwood. Just before the interval Sunderland scored again through Marshall after Burnley full back Dave Taylor received an elbow in the face but Marshall’s goal was given. Twenty minutes into the second half the Clarets equalised. A Billy Watson free-kick found Bob Kelly, Kelly controlling the ball with his forehead, before striking it past Dempster in the Sunderland goal, the game ending 2-2.
Shortly after the final whistle, John McKenna, President of the Football League presented Burnley captain Tommy Boyle with the League Championship trophy. McKenna began his speech mentioning that Preston North End and Sheffield United had previously shared the record for 22 matches unbeaten in a season and that a new record of thirty games unbeaten had now been set, a greater feat than the other two clubs. McKenna had the greatest pleasure in asking captain Tommy Boyle to accept the trophy. Boyle stepped forward and raised the trophy and accepted his Championship medal. As part of his speech, Tommy said he was pleased to be the captain of Burnley and that the team had fully earned the League trophy this year. He then thanked the players, directors and all the spectators for the support they had given the team during the year.
Burnley: Moorwood, Smelt and D Taylor, Basnett Boyle and Watson, Nesbitt, Kelly, Anderson, Cross and Mosscrop.
Sunderland: Dempster, Hobson and England, Mitton, Parker and Poole, Best, Power, Buchan, Marshall and Martin
Burnley 2, Sunderland 2.
Attendance: 22,034

Superb Mike, thanks. What an achievement for the club. Are you the author of the book Tommy Boyle Broken Hero? It's a brilliant read about the club, the man and the times he lived in
Re: Burnley Crowned Champions of England
Yes I wrote the Boyle story. Just completed the film too.

A great achievement. I see BPA came bottom. My favourite non-league team.
