Re: England v Croatia
I missed the exciting game showing in tv that Shearer and Jenas watched where England played fast flowing exciting football
I saw the boring sideways and backwards passing game with Mings and Stones tripping over each other and Foden running into defenders
Sorry, but England are still a poor team, overrated by the media with a poor manager

Re: England v Croatia
A team that always beat us and were runners up in the world cup are average?
It wasn't that bad. Easy to deal with for Pickford.
They are trying to inject some positively and support for the team. The key difference between England and other teams have been the media coverage. We are negative by nature and quick to bash our team. Other countries are supportive of theirs.
It may not have been the most convincing performance but as I said already Croatia are our nemesis and a very good side. Saying we didn't play well is a bit like saying Burnley didn't play well digging a result out against Arsenal.

Imagine Burnley fans complaining about a defensively solid hard fought 1-0 win
Re: England v Croatia
Excellent opening performance. Not sure what some fans expect? Deserved win and clean sheet against a team that knocked us out of the most recent tournament. We had the better chances - Foden was unlucky and Kane should have scored - and limited Croatia to literally nothing. I’ve criticised Mings and while Croatia didnt have much up top, he delivered a very composed performance.
Not sure Tripps at left back is for me though. Southgate seems to suggest its for his leadership and experience. Perhaps if Maguire gets fit then he will partner Shaw with him. Well in control of the group now.

Absolutely right about injecting positivity. Some of the negativity after a solid win against a decent side is curious.superdimitri wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 4:43 pmA team that always beat us and were runners up in the world cup are average?

I disagree. They're a hard team to beat and we often find it hard against them. The backbone of their team is very similar and the way they play trying to get under your skin is very much still a thing. Not sure how you can't see that to be honest.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 4:47 pmAs for “ a team that always beats us “ get a grip ffs , that has no bearing whatsoever and means nothing to any current crop of players of any generation . Re: England v Croatia
England got a higher xG today against world cup finalists than we managed in 70% of our games last season. We never looked like conceding, we've topped the group, it's the hottest day of the year and there's beers in the fridge (ymmv). Cheer up lads!

A well managed game by England who created the most danger even though it was sporadic.
They were always going to have some decent possession with Modric, Kovacic and Perisic in their side, the big miss for them from a few years ago was Mandzukic, Rebic and Kramaric were peripheral at best.

The only negative I can think of was the result was too good and we are nearer to finishing top of the group - I'd rather we came second.

They don’t and without Mandzukic (sp?) and a 3 year older Modric are certainly not the same team.superdimitri wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 4:43 pmA team that always beat us and were runners up in the world cup are average?
Most importantly I didn’t say it was a bad performance, just not the ******** of total football some are making it out to be.

The team that always beat us and were runners up in the WC weren't playing today.
An average Croatia side were tho... and we managed to put them to the sword, so all's well.
Saturday is a big test, the Scots will be as up for it as they always are against us.
Philips did very well today, very well indeed.

Boring game, I fell asleep during the second half & after reading the match report & what people have to say to on here I don’t think I missed much, from the sounds of it we did what we had to do but going forwards we need to improve in a colossal way if we are to be taken seriously in this tournament.

Is that supposed to mean something? People are giving there opinions which are mixed, it was a 1 nil game played out in sweltering heat it wasn’t what I’d call a thriller, it was ok a few odd decent performances mainly Phillips & mount didn’t do too bad. I’ve watched lower league football & being more interested than the 55 mins I did watch today being honest.

WC semi we had 45% possession, it was 50/50 today and we used the ball much better for the most part. I thought we did ok today considering the conditions and the opposition.

Re: England v Croatia
Easy. Burnley fans are used to watching a GOOD team. Because that’s what we are, a good TEAM. I think maybe that the point is this England team aren’t as good as they SHOULD be, given their individual talent. Great players, not a great team… at least not yet.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:02 pmNot sure how any Burnley fan can say England are a poor team
England are LESS than the sum of their parts, presumably because of the instructions given to them on how to set up and play the game.

Re: England v Croatia
England are a new, young and developing team. Clearly not the finished article. Bellingham is 17. Foden Phillips Rice Mings have less than 20 caps between them. Give them chance. Kane looked a tad off it today but im sure he will come good.bobinho wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:15 pmEasy. Burnley fans are used to watching a GOOD team. Because that’s what we are, a good TEAM. Re: England v Croatia
Didn't see much of it since my granddaughter needed me to play with her. Ironically, I was able to see the pundits at half time. Had it been Radio 4's 'Just A Minute' it contained plenty of repetition, not too much deviation but not even a hint of pausing. They were like clockwork dolls wound up to their maximum with Shearer in particular holding the microphone ìn a manner suggesting that karaoke might be on his agenda sometime soon. And how many people does it take to tell everyone that it was hot? t was hot just prior to kick off but then an hour later just before the second half we were reliably informed by some lady at pitchside that it was still hot. Incredible.
Re: England v Croatia
Didn't England beat them previously as well in the Nations league?

But you look stupid if you’re expecting PL fast paced action from International football because it’s never really been like that. International football is mainly defensive low tempo football in general it reminds me of French league footybobinho wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:15 pmEasy. Re: England v Croatia
Hard to judge from 90 minutes, but this Croatia don't look the force they were in 2018, however they are an experienced international outfit, and today was never going to be an end-to-end flowing football contest, and one goal either way was likely to settle the match, thankfully for England we grabbed that goal, and then comfortably saw out the rest of the game, and that's encouraging as in the past England have been guilty of throwing away leads, so it might not be the most exciting start, but I'll happily take a 1-0 and the 3 points from what could have been a tricky banana skin first up.bobinho wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:01 pmThe team that always beat us and were runners up in the WC weren't playing today.

Slow start to a competition is ideal as the tub thumping Sun and others might lay off the we can win it headlines and who knows how far we can go with less pressure. Not the best of performances but a win is a win.

Precisely if England had continued in the vein of the first 10-15 minutes they'd have been on their knees by HT, you have to play the conditions as well as the opponents.

This thread is about today’s game. I don’t see people claiming we’re going to beat a super power. Most people are just praising what was a very good and solid performance. The fact you didn’t see the match but are agreeing with a critical poster’s analysis shows your agenda.

I can remember Brazil played fast paced, so did Argentina,. Holland were an absolute delight as have been Germany, France, Spain, Italy in their pomp and currently Belgium. The rest knock it side to side because in a competition they are 'also rans'; a bit like Burnley who are just glad to be in the competition with little or no chance of winning it.

Erm, I would suggest that to have an opinion on how well England played you ideally would have watched all of the game. Failing that I would suggest that at least watching a single minute of the game may be beneficial.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:17 pmI only watched 55 mins myself, to have an opinion in rileybobs world how long do we get? 5 mins 10 mins 15 mins or another set time, he’s still allowed his opinion he’s probably based it upon what he’s read & how he feels.

Maybe he just looked at the stats after all that’s the most important thing or it’s believed to be by some people. You would need to ask him how he’s based his opinion on England’s performance today.
