Dont show this to Forest fans, otherwise their nickname would change to the 'angry ones'

I remember WBA when I was young as The Throstles but then in the 70's perhaps it became Baggies. No idea why.

Likewise, but Baggies has been around since the early 1900s too.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 10:51 amI remember WBA when I was young as The Throstles but then in the 70's perhaps it became Baggies. No idea why.
From their club historian:
‘In its early days The Hawthorns had only two entrances, one behind each goal.
‘On match days the gatekeepers would gather up the takings at each end and be escorted by policemen along the sides of the pitch to the centre line where their was a small office under the stand.
‘The gate money, mostly in pennies, amounted to a considerable sum and was carried in large cloth bags.
‘It wasn’t long before some wag in the crowd started shouting ‘here come the bag men!’ at their appearance in front of the main stand, and this developed into a chant of “here come the Baggies!”, giving the team its unofficial nickname.’

Re: Nicknames
There was a procession of similar bags across the bottom of the Bee Hole End right up until its demise, as I recall.
I'm sure at some clubs the instruction would've been to make the bags look as empty as possible so we can under declare the attendance and avoid donating too much to HMRC.

Throstles came when they moved to their current ground. Apparently throstle is a local word for a thrush which can be found in hawthorn bushes.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 12:11 pmSo, the Throstles was just based on their club badge then?

Re: Nicknames
Weren’t we also called “the royalites “ or something like that due to being one of the teams watched in the cup final by a reigning monarch?

Re: Nicknames
Yep, certainly pre-dates the cup final. I think we were the first football club to be visited by royalty or something.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:24 pmI think it came from Prince Albert going on the Turf after he’d officially opened Victoria Hospital.

Why are Darlington the Quakers? Pity the Shakers aren't around any more. Well they are but not at the Gigg.

I can recall the ground being referred to as 'The Throstles' Nest'. Wasn't just a local term, Throstle was quite commonly used throughout the UK.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:20 pmThrostles came when they moved to their current ground.
