VAR at the Euros
VAR at the Euros
It seems to be a lot better than how it has been used in the Premier League. One of the improvements seems to be an unwillingness to intervene unless there has been an obvious error. I still hate the bloody thing though

Re: VAR at the Euros
The biggest change required right now in the PL is to get the referees and assistants to get back to actually reffing and making decisions at the right time, instead of just not bothering and hoping that VAR will help them out. The game should be managed in real time.
Agree wholeheartedly that not getting involved unless its an obvious error is going well. I'd have that all day...

It has felt much better. Hopefully that continues and the premier league learns from it.

Denmark penalty anyone?
Re: VAR at the Euros
That was a travesty but justice prevailed. Isn’t it so much better, though, to be talking about the one incident that VAR should have got involved with instead of the endless number of delays and interfering that we’ve had in the Premier League?

VAR should have got involved with Ukraine's first goal tonight, and then sent the entire midfield three of the Cloggies off.
Shocking stuff, and no wonder Roy Keane was foaming at the mouth.

It's better because they don't know each other so aren't afraid to go against the ref.

Re: VAR at the Euros
Very refreshing not to have Sky/BT commentators and Summarisers constantly gabbling on about VAR and replaying incidents over and over as if to influence the outcome. It's being used here as it was intended to be used!
Re: VAR at the Euros
The European refs don't seem to give free kicks based on the volume of the squeal from the diving player either.

Tell you what, though, they need to get rid of that ridiculous rule of the linesman keeping his flag down when the player is offside. What a stupid system that has become! There’s been 2 or 3 instances where even I know it’s offside, even though I’m sat at an angle to the TV, watching from an awkward camera angle. Just call it and stop all this pissin around
Re: VAR at the Euros
The offside flag rule is just rubbish. Overall, I dislike VAR but agree it appears to have been much better in the early matches of the tournament so far. No long agonising waits.
The Hungary goal and France's 2nd disallowed ones looked obvious offside - just get the flag up

Re: VAR at the Euros
It does seem ridiculous when the player is a yard offside and they let play go on for nearly a minute before ruling out a goal.
Having said that Ronaldo looked well offside for his second against Hungary and it didn't even seem to be reviewed.
Definitely an improvement on what we've seen in the Premier League.

Re: VAR at the Euros
Ronaldo looked off - you assume VAR is looking at everything anyway, even if the TV isn't showing multiple replays

Re: VAR at the Euros
It seems to have gone the other way to be honest. The Premier League is as bad as anywhere for 'squealing' and rolling about.
I quite like the European refs, they seem to ignore it and let a lot more go. This idea the Prem is more physical isn't borne out in what we see in the Champions League and these tournaments. It's our players that are the big babies now, and our refs that fall for it.
Someone like Jack Grealish could be in for a shock.. if he ever gets on the pitch.

Re: VAR at the Euros
Not flagging until the end of the move has to go… it stops fans being able to celebrate goals… and that is after all the point of it all.
It removes all the excitement of the game

I’d prefer it if the assistant made a signal, even if it’s not raising the flag, to signify that the flag will be raised at the end of the goalscoring opportunity.

He can use the comms to let the referee know that he will be flagging, nobody else needs to know -----fans don't matter in the world of elite football unless you are sat watching on TV somewhere. Very sad, but very true.

Much better games than PL. body contact allowed, what a breath of fresh air. Far more flow to the match.

What if he flags at the time and gets it wrong as would probably have happened with Ronaldo's second?elwaclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 1:11 pmNot flagging until the end of the move has to go… it stops fans being able to celebrate goals… and that is after all the point of it all.

I can't believe there are still people that don't understand why they're told not to flag until the end of the move.

Re: VAR at the Euros
There was an incident in the home game against Liverpool when the assistant flagged Chris Wood offside despite him being five yards inside. The ref blew having seen the flag which ruled out any possibility of Wood going on to score. I know it’s frustrating but if he flags and the ref blows then a wrong can’t be corrected.Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 7:57 pmWhat if he flags at the time and gets it wrong as would probably have happened with Ronaldo's second?

There do sees seem to be far fewer VAR stoppages and when it is used, decisions are being made much quicker, rather than after watching dozens of replays.

Re: VAR at the Euros
I cannot believe that people cannot understand, footballers have always played to the whistle not to the flag. Linesmen have always waved their flags without offsides or fouls being blown up, while play continued until the referee confirmed the decision… which is were VAR if needed could helpStan Tastic wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 7:57 pmWhat if he flags at the time and gets it wrong as would probably have happened with Ronaldo's second?

Look, I know it's difficult for you, but read CT's example of Wood being wrongfully flagged offside, and then consider how foolish you've made yourself look.

I have not lost any argument. My final comment was intended to be what is was… please don’t try and belittle me, or act superior. In fact I’d rather not converse at all, if it’s all the same to you. I have zero respect for your opinion so please go and play your petty games elsewhereStan Tastic wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:20 pmThat's not very polite, resorting to abuse because you've lost the argument.

Re: VAR at the Euros
It has just highlighted so far, how in general,p!ss poor our officials are and how the PL implement VAR as a whole.
We import the best players to the PL, perhaps now is the time to start importing the best officials too

As for offside, they have made it impossible for the linesman to judge close offsides by removing the "level" option. That's why the delay, because in the olden days, if the linesman had to judge between the relevant portion of one man's armpit and the outer edge of the other man's toenail, he would have said "sod it, that looks level" and called it onside. Now it can't be level, so he has to make his best effort to judge between the armpit and the toenail, and he will be wrong half the time. So they delay to avoid disallowing a shedload of legal goals.

Re: VAR at the Euros
But that was not the comment I made that drew a snide reply. I merely said, players were always taught not to react to the flag. So if VAR is employed at the end fans and players have been “flagged” and VAR is checking. It is how I always thought that was the way it would be used… NO PLAYER stops for a flag, as schoolboys we were taught to play to the whistle… and it means that players and fans can actually enjoy the emotion of scoring again.dsr wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 11:38 pmWhen your argument is "you can stick your argument up your ...
