Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
was this expected? Not seen anyone mention it.
With Vyds part of the Euros our striker options might be a bit limited early season.

He should come back match fit then.
Good luck to the lad.

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
I think we need to replace Barnes or Rodriguez, arguably both but 1 is more realistic in this window.

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
I saw this the other week but sort of dismissed it but only if NZ reached the final would he be missing all pre-season even if selected. The bigger concern is their games in January that could see him miss part of the season.

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
The last of their group games is 28th July. Would we not give him time off, even if they go out at that stage, considering the travelling he will have done, meaning he will effectively miss all of pre season ?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 9:13 amI saw this the other week but sort of dismissed it but only if NZ reached the final would be be missing all pre-season. Don’t think it’s a bad thing to be in the Olympics, but I don’t think it should be for “elite” players.
Should be for players from lower-leagues imo
Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
I went to Wembley in 2012. It was rubbish unlike the rest of the Olympics which was brilliant. I think Sordell was on the bench.

Good for him. Obviously it isnt the world cup. But to represent your country in the olympics in any discipline is brilliant. Also might get him and us more exposure out in the far east, who knows!?

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
Wood's attendance at the Olympics is purely at the discretion of Burnley Football Club or more maybe more importantly the manager.
Clubs do not have to release players for the Olympics in the same way they do for full internationals and have the right to not let them go.

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
If Chris Wood fancies playing in the Olympics absolutely Burnley should back him to do so. We have to expect good quality players to be missing for periods of the season, it is one way Burnley can really appeal to internationals who may be on the fringe of the biggest clubs.
Fitness should not be much of an issue, as New Zealand being a small nation will see the Olympics as a chance to really raise the countries sporting profile… so they will not be going to sight see.

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
Yeah amateur sports like the Olympic boxing is all amateur, boxers have a chance to turn professional but then can't qualify to represent their nation at the Olympics.

He might have to quarantine for 10 days coming from Japan.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 9:22 amThe last of their group games is 28th July. Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
GB men didn't qualify for this year's Olympics. Qualification is based on how well the under 21s do in their european championship. I think GB men did qualify for the 2016 Olympics by virtue of England under 21s making the semi-finals of the euros, but Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all vetoed sending a GB men's team, even if it was made up entirely of English players.

Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
Yes and quite rightly too. There has been pressure for years for a Great British team, although that has diminished somewhat with a number of country’s breaking up… the other FA’s are not going to risk undermining their national teams for what would in effect be England + a few from the dominionsClaretCliffofDover wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 2:09 pmGB men didn't qualify for this year's Olympics. Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
He's still had a decent break this summer. As long as he's back for our first game don't really see an issue. If he wants to play we shouldn't stand in his way.
Re: Chris Wood in NZ Olympic Squad
As he hasn’t played for NZ for a long time then if I were him I would retire from international football immediately. No benefit to him or his personal career playing in a third rate event. Massively damaging if he were to pick up an injury
