Mike Conroy, Steve Harper. Were we really thinking that either or both of them.could make a.significant.difference?

Steve Harper more than Mike Conroy at the time. Harper gave us a torrid time the season before.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 1:09 pmMike Conroy, Steve Harper. Were we really thinking that either or both of them.could make a.significant.difference?

Hadn’t he? Conroy was an unknown to us but Harper had been outstanding against us for PNE.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 1:38 pmSteve Harper more than Mike Conroy at the time. Harper gave us a torrid time the season before.

Re: ARTICLE: Casper makes second signing as pre-season starts
Ah! the pre-Bosman days, week to week contracts well players haggled over a new deal.
Conroy and Harper were great captures on frees, especially the latter, who at those levels always looked a class act.
Casper assembled a decent squad, the problem was he couldn't get them playing, and it was only when Mullen take the reins that they really showed their abilities to the fullest extent.
Interesting that PNE were trying to get players off their wage bill, and the ones they wanted rid off were still contracted so they couldn't be easily moved on, different days indeed.
150k for Warren Joyce would have been a fortune for us back then, if we'd have forked out the readies would he have been our record signing at the time?

I have a soft spot for Steve Harper. Like all wingers he was inconsistent but every season there was a 5 game purple patch where he was very good. One of the best goals he scored was against Aldershot and it subsequently got wiped from the record books.

Conroy cost us around £40,000. Bosmans weren’t free back then.tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 4:46 pmAh! the pre-Bosman days, week to week contracts well players haggled over a new deal.

How unusual
Re: ARTICLE: Casper makes second signing as pre-season starts
I remember Steve Harper being very much maligned then being one of our best players a level up. A strange one.

Talking of JM back there has he settled for retirement with no connection with the professional game or is he advising /coaching anywhere has anyone heard.
Nothing to suggest he’s active on wiki for some time.

Re: ARTICLE: Casper makes second signing as pre-season starts
I like these articles but any chance the title could have ARCHIVES or FLASHBACK or something similar at the start?
I’m that desperate for a signing I didn’t read it correctly on NewsNow and thought we’d signed a player!

One of the best £40,000 ever spent then :)his goals were essential towards firing us to promotion.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 5:11 pmConroy cost us around £40,000. Bosmans weren’t free back then.
Just reading his bio, I never realised he'd played for Blackpool, Burnley, & PNE, that must be a rarity.

Others that come to mind who have played for all three are Tony Ellis, Gary Parkinson, David Eyres and Clarke Carlisle.
Re: ARTICLE: Casper makes second signing as pre-season starts
And just 1 team missing from that list......he never did manage to play for Accrington !

Was it the next season we played Moscow Dynamo in a pre-season at the Turf, surely can't have been this one if we're off to Russia? We got hammered. They were brilliant, or that's how I remember it anyway, they looked like they were playing at a different speed to us.

You are spot on, summer 1992 and we lost 4-2.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 6:59 pmWas it the next season we played Moscow Dynamo in a pre-season at the Turf, surely can't have been this one if we're off to Russia?
