I rate Martinez much higher than Ramsdale.
I think that Arsenal were quite intelligent/responsible in their strategy of putting money into a stadium to get a higher regular income etc. and have shot themselves in the foot by a number of expensive poor signings in the last 10 years

That is absolutely crazy money. Ramsdale looks like a really poor goalkeeper with the presence of a goldfish.

I know . Thats just what I thought. Championship at best. Its been reported in todays times. And yes it really does make you wonder Popes worth
Re: Arsenal......you couldnt write it!!!!
Just goes to show. A player is worth what a selling club is prepared to sell for or what a buying club is prepared to pay.
That said. I am sure there are better keepers out there for £30 million than Ramsdale.

Wow! Madness. Also has 3 relegations on his CV and he is only 23. Chesterfield (on loan), Bournemouth and Sheff Utd.

Ramsdale had a tough time at Sheffield United initially but turned things round and won their player of the year (albeit in a relegation season),

Re: Arsenal......you couldnt write it!!!!
Martinez came in late season for Arsenal and was outstanding. Must have had the conversation with Arteta and was told Leno is number 1. Don’t know how is contract stood but £20m might have been a good deal then.
Is Leno still number 1? That’s a silly amount of money to pay for a back up.
As I’ve said many times all these young keepers have phenomenal reflexes and make amazing saves but many can’t organise their defence and make poor decisions. Ramsdale is one of these.

Re: Arsenal......you couldnt write it!!!!
He is nowhere near a keeper of that value. Martinez absolutely shone at Villa and is an organiser. Pope is in a different league. When he didn't play our 2 backups were similar in not coming off the line for crosses, lack of communication and organisation. Pope is top drawer at this as was Heaton, both never stop talking.

WOW-thats some fee. If this goes through it could set a new bar similar to when Ross McCormack (a fairly ordinary striker) setting a new high for a Championship player when he joined Fulham. Ramsdale is a very brave young keeper-not a bad shot stopper, but no where near good enough for the England squad. I rate Sam Johnstone of WBA higher. Makes the Hennessy business look very shrewd

Goalkeepers with poor teams are often the ones who get recognised pulling off some fantastic saves and being MOM. Playing for a Top team or any team requires something more than shot stopping though. But that's the first thing most of us spot.leightonjameslegend wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 8:28 amWow! Madness. Arsenal must have money to burn if they're paying £30m+ for Ramsdale, I'd agree SJ looks the better prospect for me.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:29 amWOW-thats some fee. What's AR like with his feet if he's going to The Emirates surely that'll be a prerequisite given that Arsenal insist on playing out from the back.

Crack on...... there must be another Dozen in your note Book. Our goalkeeping coach spotted more than "Shot stopping " with Tom and Pope......and signing Hennessey could be a very shrewd move.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 12:05 pmWorked out for Tom Heaton, after Bristol City got relegated to League 1 though !

Our goalkeeping coach made Tom and Pope into more than shot stoppers, don't think he'd have had any input in there signings, and I'm sure he will make hennessey a better keeper aswell.

Mercer had a big input in signing PopeBarlickclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:16 pmOur goalkeeping coach made Tom and Pope into more than shot stoppers, don't think he'd have had any input in there signings, and I'm sure he will make hennessey a better keeper aswell.
This is from piece in the Athletic
While Tom Heaton was a signing Dyche wanted, when it came to Pope, having watched him almost by accident at York, Mercer worked closely with chief scout Martin Hodge — another former goalkeeper — on monitoring him further. He remained on his radar and when Charlton got relegated from the Championship in 2016 at the same time Burnley were leaving that division as title winners, making a move for a then 24-year-old Pope became a no-brainer.

Arsenal are a car crash at the minute, owners who refuse to spend and refuse to sell the club, their squad is stacked with players who have been there for years and simply aren't good enough, A rookie manager who looks so far out of his depth, they play boring football too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Arsenal get relegated in the near future, that's how far they've regressed recently.
They won like 5 games in a row last year at the end to paper over the cracks and they stole 8th spot. They're an absolute shambles though, it's incredible how quickly they've fell apart into a midtable side. Wenger used to guarantee top 4. There's quite a few at Arsenal who I wouldn't mind here.
Nelson, Maitland Niles, Willock. Seemingly all available for transfer, young prospects, Arsenal aren't Liverpool, they typically don't drive a hard bargain when selling.

Not.
If we built one (like The Reebok)………even that might tip me over the edge and rather push a trolley round Tesco…….

He wasn’t behind O’Connell as Henderson was when Sheffield had the better season, I’m not suggesting ramsdale better than Henderson but I think they really missed O’Connell last season defensively & with his presence it’s logical to assume they would have conceded less based on O’Connell form the season before, but he’s certainly not worth 30 mil anyhow.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:03 amRamsdale had a tough time at Sheffield United initially but turned things round and won their player of the year (albeit in a relegation season),

Just that they had been more sensible financially than some of their rivals but wasted that money with their choice of transfer purchase

Arsenal have offered 6 mill, if he’s 32 million pope must be 100 & Norris 30.
Re: Arsenal......you couldnt write it!!!!
Pickford makes 'Great saves' for Pickford. Those same saves would be made routine by Pope and Pope's great saves would be goals if Pickford was keeping.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:35 amPickford is a classic example of a keeper who makes great saves

Did The Times actually say that Arsenal are going to pay £32m for Ramsdale?
