Re: Sir Bobby Robson
A classy man for sure.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
Hard to disagree with those words. Quite how they sit alongside the current ‘need’ for followers, tweets and the like, I don’t know.
I can’t believe it’s twelve years since he passed. Football is worse off for him not being around - a proper gent.

Re: Sir Bobby Robson
What a thoroughly nice bloke.
Broke the mould when he sadly passed away.
RIP Sir Bobby.

Re: Sir Bobby Robson
A gentleman. Watched a programme about his life a couple of months ago and it was fascinating... look at the clubs he managed, the countries he worked in and also his achievements. No one had a bad word to say about him. Top man. His words ring true even today and especially so ahead of this coming season.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
A football legend, lived and played the game beyond reproach, so desperately unlucky with England and I reckon we would have won the euros with him in charge of the players available now.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
We lost the Euros because at the end the pressure of penalties was too great. That would have been the case whoever was in charge.
Bobby Robson was a great manager no doubt. He was hounded out of Newcastle by the fans, as most managers have been, then they built a statue to him. Hypocrites.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
With more flair in the game it wouldn't have come to penalties IMHO, that's what make football great we all have different opinions especially in hindsight.Chobulous wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 2:40 pmWe lost the Euros because at the end the pressure of penalties was too great. Re: Sir Bobby Robson
I had the pleasure of his and his wife's company in a private box at York Races circa 2004. A true gentleman who took as much interest in the people he was entertaining as they clearly were in him.

Re: Sir Bobby Robson
A true legend of the game, and to have the longevity of managerial career that he did at both domestic and international level, shows just how good he was, and his playing career wasn't half bad either back in the day.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
I met him in 2001. An absolute gentleman and wonderful human being. Went out of his way to be so pleasant.StuffyClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 2:47 pmI had the pleasure of his and his wife's company in a private box at York Races circa 2004. He said the same to me about you TonyClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 2:50 pmYou lucky man - Sir Bobby is someone I would have really liked to have met
Funnily enough, I think I won a place in the box due to my association with this sites predecessor. I think I had joined up to an online betting site (Bet365 maybe) via links on CM and was invited to the Races by the betting company. There were about half a dozen of us, each permitted to take a guest. As well as Sir Bobby and his missus, I think Freddie Fletcher and his missus were there and a couple of sports journalists and reps of the betting company.

He's right about the clambering up the steps part, it was me as a young boy dragging my Granddad up deep into his 80s while he'd stop for a chat with someone new after every completed step

That sounds like him. I miss him telling me about playing against Nat Lofthouse.

Yes in goal for Burnley school boys One of his proudest moments, although I can't remember the scoreClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 3:31 pmThat sounds like him. I miss him telling me about playing against Nat Lofthouse.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
I remember him bringing the newspaper article to a game for me to read. I used to love his stories and humour.
Can still picture walking up the Bob Lord steps and chatting to everyone. He’d shake everyone’s hand, stop and say “have they added an extra flight of stairs”

Only someone who really loved the game and experienced that "something special" about football - a child's introduction to the game through attending a match - could have written that. It's so simple and yet so difficult to explain to people who haven't experienced it.
Re: Sir Bobby Robson
Words that resonate with me so much. I still get that feeling now when I walk up the steps and see the players warming up on the pitch. Cannot wait for the Brighton game.
Sir Bobby was a giant of the game.

Agree powerful words. That last para just says so much that true fans and Dad's will understand. Great footie man.
