Cornet & Vydra injuries
Any updates on Vyds and Cornet? Do we know when we will find out any news?
Those 2 will be vital at the weekend.

I'd be extremely surprised if Cornet is even in the squad for the weekend.
Vydra would be perfect vs Norwich though so fingers crossed.

Hate to say I told you so....Cornet shouldn't have played against Rochdale or at least brought off when we were winning handsomely.

Re: Cornet & Vydra injuries
surely that can only have helped him to adapt, the Rochdale game was considerably slower than the Leicester game, which was played at 100mph from the very start. The Prem is so quick.Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 11:47 amHate to say I told you so....Cornet shouldn't have played against Rochdale or at least brought off when we were winning handsomely.

Vydra pulled up as well, something is wrong, either were overtraining or not preparing right. Were only 6 games in.burnley007 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 11:48 amsurely that can only have helped him to adapt, the Rochdale game was considerably slower than the Leicester game, which was played at 100mph from the very start. Can't imagine Cornet will be anywhere near the Norwich game but at least after that there's an international break and City away (which we can probably almost write off, let's be honest) - hopefully he's back for the important games against Southampton and Brentford.

Re: Cornet & Vydra injuries
Jay's done his hamstring to an extent he'll be out a little while
Vydra was knackered and something happened with his back, I expect him to play at the weekend
Cornet is a tweak, his hamstring didn't go fully otherwise he wouldn't have walked all the way around the pitch and then over to the away end at full time (same as Vydra did) - I expect he'll be out at the weekend

You've got a double "I told you so" actually. You complained when Cornet didn't play against Everton and you said he should, and you complained when Cornet did play against Rochdale when you said he shouldn't. If only he had played more minutes in the PL and less in the League Cup, his hamstring might have been entirely different v. Leicester.Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 11:47 amHate to say I told you so....Cornet shouldn't have played against Rochdale or at least brought off when we were winning handsomely.

A lot of Monday morning Quarterbacking going on here.
As for Vydra.....Westergaard deliberately kneed him in the back.....revenge for the torrid time he'd had all game. He clearly meant to hurt him, just hope it's not a Rib.

Fantastic goal though looking forward to seeing at lot more of Cornet, 3 more players of his ilk and relegation worries will be a distant menory.

Stephens was on our bench a lot last season, more than I thought before checking the stats, but he rarely started , 3 PL starts in total last season, and he only completed one 90 minutes at home to Southampton.AfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 12:20 pmI accept that we bought Roberts already carrying/recovering from an injury, but has Stephens ever been fit since he arrived?

Even the slightest of hamstring strains take a couple of weeks to heal up so it's likely Maxwel Cornet will return v Southampton at the earliest.
Re: Cornet & Vydra injuries
I would love to be wrong but doubt very much Max will feature on Saturday. He should then stay at TM during the international break. We just cannot afford to take risks.

Re: Cornet & Vydra injuries
We can probably manage without Cornet, but Vydra would be a big miss for the Norwich game, especially with Jay Rod side-lined for a few weeks by all accounts, and like you I despair of Barnes playing up top again, he offers nothing these days, no goal threat, no pace to trouble defenders, and he rarely even wins free-kicks now, and it was noticeable how we immediately reverted to playing it long once he was introduced on Saturday.Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 1:53 pmNever mind I’ve seen now. Barnes needs to try and get a Championship club in January if he can, he'd still be a handful at that level, but sadly his PL days are long behind him now.burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 3:05 pmPlease not Barnes again, he just looks lost. He's enjoyed a decent Burnley career, but as with Vokes before him, now is the time for him to move on, best for him, and best for the club, otherwise his Burnley legacy is in danger of being tarnished, and after all the service, goals and memories he's provided that would be a sad ending to the best chapter of his entire career, and he doesn't deserve that.

Seems a bit odd that SD shipped out Vokes when the time was right but for some reason has kept Barnes when it's clear he's struggling at times.tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 3:15 pmBarnes needs to try and get a Championship club in January if he can, he'd still be a handful at that level, but sadly his PL days are long behind him now.

I am amazed at how much stick Barnes gets. If he’s past it, it doesn’t say much about the Jay and Vydra.
Still our second best striker in terms of goals scored over the past few seasons.

Probably because Jay and Vyds offer us other qualities even when they're not scoring. Whereas Barnes doesn't anymore.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 4:53 pmI am amazed at how much stick Barnes gets. If he’s past it, it doesn’t say much about the Jay and Vydra.

Barnes has barely scored in his last couple of seasons has he, and when he's paired with Wood we revert to being one-dimensional again.
And it doesn't take a genius to notice Wood only went on his goal scoring spree when he was partnered with Vydra last season.
A few seasons ago Barnes was a menace in the PL, and he managed to get under the skin of defenders, as well as chipping in with some useful goals.
Last season he netted 3 PL goals in total, and the season prior he notched 6, admittedly he did miss a large chunk of that campaign, but after scoring a few early doors, he went on a lengthy drought.
Now I'll agree Jay & Vydra are hardly prolific, but at least if they aren't scoring they'll be contributing in other ways, which Barnes simply doesn't do now.
Finally Barnes is 32, so if anything he'll likely decline in his impact as he ages, and the stats back this opinion up.
But the biggest factor for me is our style of play when we play 2 big lads up top, compare how we played in the Arsenal and Leicester games when Barnes and Vydra were on the pitch respectively.
I'm pragmatic and if the Barnes/Wood combo was still effective, and we were getting results, then I'd tolerate it as it's helping us get points, but the reality is teams are now wise to how to combat their physicality, therefore we need to have another option to stretch opposition defenders, and Vydra is our best striker at doing this.
Ideally we'd get another forward alongside Wood who could score 10-15 a season, but someone in that mould doesn't come cheap. hence why we need to utilise our resources as best we can, and it's apparent to most people that our most effective pairing is Vydra & Wood.

Since the start of the 19/20 season to date Barnes has scored just 9 goals and in that period received more Yellow Cards (10).
Dyche is always reluctant to jettison his "old faithfuls" regardless of the fact that the player is clearly on a downward spiral.
The fact that Barnes remains the "second best striker" as you put it, doesn't say much for the others does it?

Plus woods best goal scoring season came whilst partnered with Barnes and Jay.
It may be apparent that it is the best partnership but in reality it is not.

Re: Cornet & Vydra injuries
If we persist with the Barnes/Wood partnership then I can't see us collecting many points, or even scoring many goals, what worked a year or two ago is now obsolete.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 5:35 pmBarnes scored the same as Vydra in less appearances and more than Jay in less appearances last season.

And yes you are quite correct both Barnes and Wood hit double figures back in 18/19, but they haven't hit those heights since, and realistically aren't likely too again.
It is a concern that we're so reliant on Wood for goals, and this is an area we could do with rectifying soon, if not in January, then definitely in the summer window.
Both Barnes and Vydra are out of contract next year, so we might not have any option but to consider replacements for both, but if I had to keep one it would have to be Vydra.
