Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
You can often feel a little sympathy for the misser of a penalty in a shoot-out but in this case that certainly does not apply. Captain and he does that. Unforgiveable.
Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
Flying North/South not much time difference so Jet Lag shouldn't be a factor, and he will have nigh on a week plus to recover from the flight

Most of Africa doesn't have a lot of difference to GMT as it's directly south. When I was in South Africa for a couple of winters with my cricket it seemed weird that there was only a 1 hour, 2 hours when our clocks went back in the winter, difference from GMT for such a long journey

The Ivory Coast keeper in the penalty shootout already looked like a beaten man before it started. Terrible body language and like has been said he was off his line for most of them. The African equivalent of Peter Shilton

Gutted for Max and gutted for Burnley. What an honour it would have been to have a AFCON winner play for us.

Not sure about jet lag or travel fatigue but his biggest challenge will be going from 32 degrees in Cameroon to about 5 here.

Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
Just caught the score, pity for the Ivory Coast, but on balance better for us in the longer term.
So he'll now be available to face Watford, meanwhile Dennis who they stopped from going on international duty is suspended for that game.
Karma is a funny thing isn't it.

Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
Agree. Neither was Clemence or Jennings, two other great keepers. Best at that time was Paul Cooper at Ipswich and probably the best I've seen for us was Marlon Beresford.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 7:46 pmWas Shilton ever good on pwenalties? I don't recall him being too sharp with them

Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
Beresford in his 1st spell with us had a blinding record in saving pens, 2nd spell not so much as I recall.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 7:54 pmAgree. Wasn't his second spell at a higher level?
He was pretty good at saving them first time around.
I've just realised I've called them "pwenalties" gotta laugh at myself

Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
His 2nd spell was probably in the Championship, or whatever it was knows as at that time, so yea a higher level, but he was also older, and perhaps lacked the speed of his earlier career.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 8:04 pmWasn't his second spell at a higher level?

On the subject of pwenalties:
Our own, and Northern Ireland's, Bailey Peacock-Farrell is really good at saving them.

Great news! Harsh on Cornet but it’ll be great to have him back after missing only one game!! UTC.
Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
You'd think that better players would take better penalties but that never seems to be the case.

Re: All Egypt today aren’t we
The trouble with Shilton was that he always waited until the kick was taken before diving, he would never try and anticipate which way the ball would go. In Italia 90 he went the right way each time but as long as the ball was struck firmly and towards the corner he was never going to save it. Would have been fine if any of the Germans had attempted a Panenka though.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 7:46 pmWas Shilton ever good on pwenalties? Unless I'm misremembering Harry Thomson saved every penalty taken against him one season until the very last game when Alan Ball put one past him.

Ah yeah, wonder whether Klopp will want them both back pronto or give them a period off like we did with Maxwel?
I’m not going to get too excited about it. He’s a slave driver so he might have a plane waiting for them both
