If this is true, then it is too far. They shouldn't be interfering with what parents wish to feed their children.

Yes, stating environmental issues; it's causing quite a stir in the village and beyond; even being mentioned in the nationals and TV.
Some are saying it's wrong as this may be the only hot meal that kids get. The Head isn't without controversial issues in the past either.
It's quite a hotbed of controversy within the local community, and also within farming too; albeit fish is still on the menu!!

From The Mirror
"Headteacher Rachel Tomlinson said the school switched to vegetarian meals to educate children about the environmental impact of eating meat".
So it doesn't sound like a long term thing to me, though the article doesn't state how long the 'ban' is for.
"Mum Zoe Douglas described it as “a joke” and said she is now looking to move her daughter Amelia to a different school."
Sounds a bit OTT...

This is an interesting watch, most slaughter houses shut their gates, but this guy actually discusses the meat production inside a slaughter house with the owners who are very transparent. Intensive farming is an issue, and meat production needs to be moved to a regenerative style, but could people afford it is the bigger question?
The video is very informative though, and a lot centres on animal welfare.

Well, nothing wrong with a healthy, hot school meal that is vegetarian
But I guess it should really depend on parental choice, though I do applaud the reasoning behind it (and this is from a meat eater)

Yes it’s true, think they intend to carry on indefinitely, it’s been that way for about a year now.
A teacher did say she was glad to debate it with anyone, I challenged her on Madagascar rain forests being destroyed to grow Palm oil which is now in just about everything we buy. I asked are they teaching the kids about this destruction to further growing products to feed vegetarians .
No surprise it got no answer.
Rain forests are being destroyed to grow Palm oil way more than for rear meat, but that does not fit with the woke agenda so they will not recognise it.

I dunno about you, but we've probably cut in half our meat consumption over the past few years, because of the health risks, the environmental damage and the cost

I’d not be happy I must admit, I’d not move schools but I do think if she wants to educate them, and she does have a point on some things, she really needs to educate herself also.

School will be the only place some children in these classes get any form of meat and nutrition like that. I think it’s a bizarre decision.

Re: Barrowford Primary School....
She comes over as a very alternative type of person, a lot of teachers left when she took over as head of the school. One of the previous controversial things that made headlines was that there are 'no naughty children'. There was no disciplinary policy within school, albeit I am not sure whether that has changed now.

I think Lancasterclaret is right, we need to be aware and cut our meat consumption, and as stated it should be by parental consent, not the head teachers views only.

Spot on, both my Daughters are veggie, and have been for over 30 years, they are healthy human beings and they chose this, me and MrsP supported them in this choice following discussions about nutrition. My Granddaughter who is coming up to 12 has now been veggie for about 3 years, however her twin Brother eats meat, and strangely loves Sushi, which was a shock to us!!Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 7:29 pmImportant to state here that you can get a balanced diet and a healthy one without meat, and the idea that you can't really does need combating

Fair enough. For those on school meals out of choice, who don’t like the policy, can change to packed lunches and ignore the advice. It’s those without the choice that I feel sorry for, but I suppose you have to respect that the head chooses the menu if you’re not paying.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 7:27 pmThey’re advising people to not have meat in lunchboxes

I went to Barrowford county primary school a very long time ago. I attended school dinner when I was about 5 year old. I remember we was all told to be quiet and stop talking by a teacher and said something along the lines ‘or you’ll be shot’. I was terrified that he was actually going shoot us. Sounds like some attitudes have changed.

If a child is unlucky like myself and has nut allergies and has Birch allergy syndrome. What do you suggest feeding them??
It’s never going to be a balanced diet.
No nuts or seeds.
Just about all fruit is out. Cherries, pears, apples , peaches, berries etc.
Uncooked tomatoes and peas.
A policy that rules out meat could be really unfair on some kids.

Agreed. My kids (after a school trip to a farm) decided to become vegetarian at ages 6 and 8. My son is nearly 40 now and is still a veggie, my daughter, a few years younger, decided about 10 years ago that she'd start to partake of seafood but still no other meat. Hasn't done their health/mental capacity any harm whatsoever.ALP wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 7:35 pmSpot on, both my Daughters are veggie, and have been for over 30 years, they are healthy human beings and they chose this, me and MrsP supported them in this choice following discussions about nutrition. I eat a lot of fruit/veg/pulses but some meat occasionally. It's not necessary to eat meat for good health but I dont consider it right to dictate to other people what food they can/cant eat or drink. (Offering advice is fine).

It should be up to the parents & the lady’s got no right to be interfering in what the kids eat, her own personal belief's shouldn’t be forced on to other peoples, she needs to keep her nose out & stop meddling in things which are none of her business & don’t concern her. I’m a strict vegetarian but If people want to eat meat it’s none of my business.

Wonder what the reaction would be if the decision was reversed ie meat mandatory at every lunchtime. Even if you're a veggie.
Personally I eat too much meat and strive to eat less, but not sure if it's right to force this on people.
On the environmental issue it's so complex it's difficult to judge, too much greenwashing about. I remember when emails said "don't print me and save a tree", now everything is going from plastic to paper based packaging. What about the trees!!

Being able to eat a healthy diet without meat, doesn't give this person the right to ban children from eating it for their lunch.
The head teacher seems like the sort of person who should be nowhere near a position of authority over a large group of children

Don’t think anyone is saying you can’t. You can also get a good balanced diet with a bit of everything. Too many people do eat too much meat and no harm in reducing consumption. It’s about choice though. This teacher should not be trying to impose her views on children. And to add to my food issues , I became type 2 diabetic.
So just a simple example, a bowl of cornflakes is going to be around 50grams of carbs. That’s going to raise my blood sugars by 7 to 10 mmol/L. Which will take me me 24 hours to get back to normal levels. A full English will raise it by 1 .
You cannot and should not be a blanket imposition of rules.

We recently looked round the school for our son and it was the head that showed us around. As others have said, very alternative views - no punishment, no rewards, all the classrooms had plain white walls so as not to over-stimulate them.
She does come across as a bit bonkers initially, but had decent arguments to backup her reasoning, it just wasn’t for us.

100% right, there should be informed choice at every level.
