Happy St George's Day
Happy St George's Day
That's if anyone is interested, St George doesn't seem to get much publicity does he. Mind you, for someone born in Turkey and never actually put a foot in England so the story goes, is he actually worthy of being our Saint ? But at least he nailed that Dragon.
Anyway......Happy St George's Day and any excuse for a drink later

Re: Happy St George's Day
I've got my St George's cross t-shirt on but unfortunately its a bit chilly not to wear a pullover over it when I go out in a short while. Gong back a couple of decades, I used to live very close to a florist and always picked up a single rose for my lapel on the day but I'm not sure if florists still do much of that business nowadays.
Ive lived in Wales for a couple of fairly lengthy stints in my life so tend to celebrate 1st March too.
Weird how it appears that more English people are exercised by St Patricks Day than St George's Day though.

It's not really celebrated up here so I'll be keeping my St George's cross tshirt under my pullover...Aclaret wrote: ↑Sat Apr 23, 2022 11:11 amThat's if anyone is interested, St George doesn't seem to get much publicity does he. We celebrate it over here in Spain, many English bars deck out the St. George bunting and flags etc and we use it as an excuse to have a few beers together.

Raised the St George’s flag this morning, it’s flying high and proud in the front garden. And if that offends anyone I don’t care.

"St. George was actually Turkish and therefore an immgrant so he's not even English..."
This is one of the most tiresome things that people want to post on the internet every year. It's so predictable and dull you're never that the so-called "Parkinsons Law" kicks in and you can't be sure if they're being ironic or 'meta'.
Either way, it's lame.

Re: Happy St George's Day
Twitter et al will be full of those socially awkward types saying “ he was Turkish / Palestinian you know “ like they’re being really edgy . Of course it’s all symbolic nonsense , mainly brought in by the Kings Edward tied to chivalric chest thumping balderdash of the day . To greatly paraphrase Oscar Wilde “ an age where people believed in everything but knew nothing “

Saint Patrick wasn't Oirish (he was born in Roman Britain around 380ad didn't set foot in Ireland until he was 16) ...Aclaret wrote: ↑Sat Apr 23, 2022 11:11 amThat's if anyone is interested, St George doesn't seem to get much publicity does he. Saint Andrew not Scottish but born in Galilee Israel, and also never set foot in Britain .... (he died in Greece in 60ad)
The only one of the Home nation Saints that was born in the country he represents is Saint David, a Welsh Bishop of Mynyw born in 500ad...
To all those who say we shouldn't raise a Glass to St George just cos he is a Turk shame on you ...
I enjoyed a nice glass of Timmy Taylors Boltmaker this evening in the Yorkshire Sunshine here in LP and raised my Glass accordingly

I annexed Calais by throwing a few plastic chairs about, put dogsh1t through immigrants letterboxes, fired off of few Sieg Heil's and managed to get a lick of Farage's balls.
I think I got the sandal wearing narrative spot on.
All hail St George (with sympathy for the Dragon).

Re: Happy St George's Day
So while the country celebrates St George killing a dragon that never existed....
William Shakespeare was born 23 April 1564 and strangely died on his 52nd birthday in 1616. William was renowned for his enthusiastic celebrating and maybe a blocked artery
and too much alcohol led to his demise?
However, 52 was considered quite a good length of life in those days. Many died much younger.
