The FA Cup Final

Post by karatekid » Sat May 14, 2022 9:42 am

I’m not too bothered about who wins but why is it being played whilst the season is still up and running? I’m sure it was always played the weekend after the season finished.
Is it due to the winter break prolonging the season perhaps?

It's been played while the PL season is ongoing for several seasons now, and I totally agree yet another showpiece event that's been sadly ruined as a spectacle, for me it always marked the end of the season and was in it's day the big match of the year, now it's almost seen as just a nuisance to some teams.

Like you I'm not fussed who wins, just hope there's plenty of goals and excitement to enjoy.

It was always the last domestic game of the season and always played on the first Saturday in May.

BBC versus ITV?
Both are showing the cup final, which is the best and why?

I used to love Cup Final day as a kid. It was exciting as it was usually the only live domestic game you watch on TV. The build up to the game at the clubs hotels, following the team buses to Wembley and all the punditry was a great watch whilst munching on a quarter of sherbet lemons and a can of Fanta orange.

David Coleman v Hugh John's. Cup Final day was very special even if the game, invariably, wasn't. Who remembers the whole game being shown again the following day at Three o'clock in the afternoon?
I can still name team line ups from games played decades ago but I couldn't tell you which teams played in the final last year.

I loved the build-up to the CF, they used to have a "Great Cup Finals of the Past" section i think (years ago) you could phone up the BBC and ask for a particular goal to be shown. Great day in the season.

Now it seems to be a vehicle (on ITV at least) to pack in as many ads for junk food, delivery services and bookies.
The great god money again. :|

The FA cup final just isn't that special anymore.
2013, Wigan won it and Portsmouth before them in 2008
Aside from Leicester last year, it's generally one of the "big" clubs who win it, Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Utd or Liverpool.
Everton and Spurs have both won it once since 1990.

The bigger teams tend to blood their younger players in it until it gets closer to the final and then they take it more seriously.

The early rounds tend to be more interesting, especially if a lower/non league team goes on a bit of a (giant killing) run.

Doesn’t help that it’s the same handful of teams every year in the final. Couldn’t care less who wins today.

Used to be massive family occasion, all round at someone's house a Jacob's join, grown ups with a few beers etc almost as revered as birthdays and Christmas. Now it is just another bland game.

As others have said, it use to be a big occasion, regardless of which teams were in the final or who you supported.
It was THE game to end the season, the week after the final league game, with a 3pm kick off

Full day of coverage on tv, breakfast with the teams at their hotel, the coach journey to Wembley.

Yes far too many fixtures at Wembley nowadays, it used to be a once in a career event to play there for many players, now the elite guys can be appearing there 2 or 3 times a season.

Maybe a bit of both, but being able to watch a live game on the tv was special then.
You use to go back into school on the Monday and talk about the game and maybe recreate moments from it

Now, there’s a game being shown everyday of the week

People who have no interest in watching the FA Cup final moaning about the FA Cup final becoming less special is akin to those people who know longer spend their time in pubs moaning about old pubs closing down.

Times change and we now get wall to wall live sports coverage which means people can pick and choose the events that interests them. If you think its worth going back to the 80's where Grandstand was about the peak of regular sporting entertainment just so one game a year will be more special then I think you take for granted how good we have it compared to back then.

Plenty on here were fully supportive of Dyche resting players for a 5th round FA Cup match to play Crystal Palace away and I bet a fair lot of those fans will be the ones who whinge once a year about cup final day

More than 'moaning' about Cup Final Day I think it's just a case of being whimsical about those of the past. A live game almost every day of the week will suit some people fine; others view the 'once a year' live match with great fondness. It was definitely an annual occasion where I recall not understanding why anybody would want to do anything else other than be in their house(or a friends) watching the Cup Final. There was a real feeling of emptiness after the game as the realisation sunk in that football was off the menu for the next three and a half months. Times have changed obviously but unless your club is involved in the final there appears to be a more casual attitude to it.

Part of the whole Liverpool/Chelsea rivalry is the notion that all Liverpool fans are working-class socialists and all Chelsea fans are Kensington Tories, so I assume it’s to stoke that more than anything. Or maybe they’re just trying to draw attention to what a crap song it is. Who knows?

The f a cup is still a great competition for non-league and lower league teams.
It's only the spoilt entitled types that don't look forward to it unless their manager is going to play the b-team.
There are so many games to pick from to watch nowadays. Sheffield utd v forest was today's highlight. Chelsea v Liverpool (whatever the competition) ranks below eurovision. At least someone I like might win that.

0-0 at the break, but I'm not sure how given the amount of chances for both sides, could be ET and pens again as the LC final was.
