Any students of history will have seen the pics of the carnage after the Falaise Gap in 1944, these pics from the failed Russian crossing at Bilhorivka are very similar

Here's an interesting but long video of the build up to the war and the start of the war from a young Russian officer's perspective. Filmed with his own phone it seems. Mostly it's before the war. It's a pretty humanizing look at his life. I'm not sure who put the film together but I doubt it was the Russians.

I saw the last minute or two of that around 2/3 weeks ago. They said that the Russian who had that on phone had been captured (alive) and that they (Ukrainians) would release more of his recorded footage in due course. Looks like theyve now done that.Elbarad wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 2:51 pmHere's an interesting but long video of the build up to the war and the start of the war from a young Russian officer's perspective. There's a video of him being interrogated as well but it's in Russian and the available translation is very bad. Can't make heads or tails of it.

It is clear now that Russians will accept a retreat if it framed and presented as a victory in Russia. Putin/ Kremlin can manufacture a “win” just as they manufactured consent for the war. This is what folks still don’t get about Putin’s Russia.

She’s probably quite right on what Putin would accept, but it is not what the West will accept I suspect. Ukraine have made it clear they want their territory back and the West know any ‘Victory’ for Putin will do nothing to keep the Balkans safe, nothing to prevent Russia rebuilding and launching another conquest.Gaia wrote: ↑Sat May 21, 2022 2:28 pmDr Olga Onuch, of Manchester uni

It has been mentioned a thousand times Putin only respects strength and long term planning… something he believes the West lacks. For long term peace he needs humbling and disabling… It needs to be crystal clear Putin has not won, even to Russians, for future stability.

Help Alexei Navalny’s team spread the truth about Russia’s war and Putin’s corruption
Help us defeat Putin's propaganda! We want to create an honest media channel where Russians can have access to uncensored reporting about the war in Ukraine.
Dear friends, it's a miracle! In just 15 days, we raised over $140,000. This amount will cover two months of our newsroom work. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for being our donors! You are the best!

Yes, heavy casualties indeed. Zelensky said during a press briefing on May 22 that 50-100 soldiers may be dying every day defending Ukraine in “the most difficult direction,” in the country’s eastern regions.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 6:05 pmEssentially there is heavy fighting in the Donbass, and lines are moving forward very slowly, and both sides are taking heavy losses

Looks like that the Russians having all their units in the Donbass is having an effect
Sounds like the Russian Plan D encirclement (after the attempts to take Ukraine, take Kiev, and encircle the entire Donbass) of Svierdonestk/Luchyansk is going to succeed
Need a map really, but I can't find one, but its sounds like the only road out is now under artillery fire

Might it not enable Putin to tell the Russian public that he had "won " his " special operation", thereby leading to a downscaling of the offensive?

I just don't know tbh
If Putin gets any territory out of this, then he's going to regard it as a "win", and he's going to want Ukraine to give up as much as possible
I'm not sure appeasing Putin is the way forward, actually, I'm very sure that appeasing Putin is a really bad idea

Re: Russia Invades
This is from late yesterday, and I think its more fluid now because once the initial frontline fortifications have been broken through, then its a lot harder to slow down armour
It will still need a lot of work to seal any encirclement, and even more to actually take the Ukrainian positions, but its still a Russian tactical victory
But it took them 85 days to take Mariupol, and Severedonestk and Luchyamsk will be even more fortified than that

I know that Ukraine have been training the reserves and would be pushing them forward soon. I wonder if this is a deliberately planned pull back to more defendable positions ready for a another advance from them. Only time will tell

Pretty sure those reserves will go to relieve front line units, who will then refit and rest before they become the units that mount the major counter attack

Precisely this. Putin was appeased in 2014, or at least felt little consequence to his actions. Didn’t work out too well. Dictators such as Putin see that as weakness.
That’s not to say NATO getting stuck in (like some voices at the other end of the argument are suggesting) should happen. But maintaining current policies do seem, slowly but surely, to be working.
Putin needs to lose, and to be seen to have lost.

I suspect pulling troops out and seeing the enemy concentrate will not upset Ukraine too much. The opportunity to employ an ever increasing number of drone/missile attacks on concentrated positions must be mouthwatering, and would reserve manpower and fighting strength.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 4:28 pmNo way that Ukraine counter attacks where Russia is both strongest in troops, tanks and artillery, and also has extensive supply network behind the line

Russia running out of tanks
I'm guessing, and this is only a guess, is that the Russians know this, and are driving much harder at the Ukrainian lines, trying to achieve successes before they are reduced to T-62 tank units (which as the report says, are essentially a death trap in the front line)
