NEW DRIVER INSURANCE

Post by Targetman » Thu Jun 09, 2022 12:32 pm

A family member has just passed his driving test this week and has been quoted some ridiculous prices for insurance.

He has used a couple of search engines and the best quotes have varied between £1,900 - £2,600 paying by monthly direct debit. It is slightly cheaper to pay 12 months up front but he can't afford to do that.
Having a 'black box' or tracker fitted isn't an option for him due to his shift patterns at work.

Just wondered if anyone has had similar problems within their family and did they manage to get anything cheaper than those quotes?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Fudge the search.

Say it's kept in a garage/locked car park.

Can they add themselves to someone's insurance instead? Though I believe they typically don't then generate their own NCB's.

He can still have both tracker and black box can't he if he explains work patterns?
I know a woman who has a tracker through her Aviva insurance app, because anytime her car came into our workshop we had to take care when we were road testing it

Adding an experienced driver (such as a parent) as an additional (but not main) named driver to the policy can sometimes lower the premium.

Admiral were cheapest when my son passed his test and was shopping around for new driver insurance but that was a while ago

Add their parents names as second drivers (assuming that they have clean licences)....that should bring the price down.

For anyone with kids that are learning, get them insured as a learner on their own car (if they have one) and start accumulating NCB at a much lower rate. My kids paid about £65/mth as learners and it only increased to about £85/mth when the first of them passed her test (the other one is still learning).

Of course, a lot of the cost depends on the car and the location.

A couple of years ago when my son passed we went through auto trader looking at all the cars he liked and put the details into a comparison web site, the cheapest turned out to be a 9 year old fiesta at £750 for the year, we checked a lot of cars though. We also added myself and my wife to his insurance as more experienced drivers bring the quote down

My lad is with Admiral too

Also, don't just rely on comparison websites as not all insurers show up on there

Yes I realise not all companies show up on comparison sites. My current insurer LV quoted £2,650 and that was with me as an added driver. I'm selling him my car, a corsa, LV currently insure this car for myself at £218 for 12 months.

I can add him to the policy but don't want to do that as he needs to start building up his own No Claims Bonus.

Is named driver no claims not still a thing? I know the Co-op used to offer that but its going on 12 years since i was actively involved on the motor side of things?

Also check all levels of voluntary excess. Often past the 1st 50 or 100 quid it makes shite all difference to the premium

I used ByMiles (a tracker one that billed by the mile but had no restrictions) just after I passed. I wasn't doing that many miles so it worked out quite a lot cheaper than all the other options. I got some referral code from moneysavingexpert.com which gave a load of free miles too, I guess there are probably others as well.

Just to say for those who mentioned Admiral.....
they have quoted him £6,626.38p and that is with me as a named driver. I have 15 years no claims bonus.

The car is only worth £2000.

Issue is not what your car is worth, but what he might smash into. That £6k won't get very far on a Tesla repair, or even a PI claim in a serious accident.

Thanks anyway.

Just checked my lads renewal (still a learner) .... £553 vs £731 last year with Admiral on a 10yr old Peugeot 107. My daughters was similar and went up by about £300 when she passed her test. She's now aged 20, just bought a brand new Audi A1 and its costing her about £80/mth

Have you tried Endsleigh?

When I first passed (admittedly 26yrs ago) they had a "sub-company" for 17-25yr olds which was the best deal for me

Best to be on parents insurance, if young, until much older. Then start own.

Thats strange then from Admiral. Presume your lads insurance is in his name?
Do you know if they got the insurance premiums online or did they ring Admiral? Our quote was done on their website.

What car/engine is that on. Sounds like it may be too powerful. Insurance companies really don’t like new drivers with anything larger than a 1.6

My Grandson Heath and Grandaughter live in Woking (when they aren`t at University) they share a 10yr old Peugeot 207. My Stepdaughter and her Husband are aaaalso named drivers and I am sure its only around £650 a year (I stand to be corrected). I think their younger Brother (who is just turned 18) is now on the policy as he has just pased his driving test too.

The policy is in Heaths name (He is the eldest) He now has nearly 3 yrs no claims and when he comes out of Uni is getting his own car then his Sister wil be the policy holder.

Always best to build up their own NCD

That must be a recent change, it was only a couple of years ago I went with them.

One other random one is NFU Mutual, the National Farmer's Union, which is sometimes cheaper.

Find out what cars are the cheapest to insure, do some online quotes as prices can differ between engine sizes, number of doors etc, then buy one - can be a massive difference, e.g. my daughter's Seat Mii was £900 - she was 17 and just passed her test. She built up her own NCD then

Gob smacked that young kids are driving around in their own shiny new Audi's and the like. Surely better ways of spending money.
In terms of car insurance, the first question to be asking, is there a need for the vehicle? Is there a cheaper way to get to work? Can the family make do with 'poolng' cars? Many drive ways are awash with vehicles that rarely go anywhere! It's a British sickness!!
On from that, having a young person as a named driver on a parents policy should be considered. By the time that young person has aged 3-4 years insurance premiums drop drastically regardless of this obsession with No Claims discounts.

She's doing a nursing degree apprenticeship while working full-time....she can spend her money how she wants as long as she doesn't come cap in hand to me.

Meanwhile, she has friends who are doing the same degree at university and they are going to come out with thousands of pounds worth of debt.

Exactly right, my nephew took his car in for a service and the black box picked up a speeding offence when the garage road tested it, he's a musician and has a black box fitted, my sister had to inform the insurance company that he works late nights and they where happy about it. Having the box brought it down inside £1000 and he's only 17, you just just have to shop around really.

Corsa's should be avoided by new drivers, because the car is considered a favourite among boy racers, for modding and ultimately crashing.

Amusingly there was a Nova gsi on eBay last year .....
It had been crashed into, and then left in, a pond for a good number of years before being found and dragged out.

Last time I saw the auction it was going for nearly £2k....despite not much of it being salvageable

The Nova was called a Corsa in mainland Europe, that's why the Corsa-B is named as such in the UK which confused people who didn't realise the Nova had another name

Sort of what I meant GIADJ

"Nova" = "Not going" in Spanish hence why it wasn't called that in Europe ...

I did a bit of research for my son about 5 years ago to determine the cheapest car for a new driver to insure and the result was a Ford KA. He bought a 2009 one and it cost him £1200 with a black box for the first year at 18 years old. As soon as he got to 21 it came down a lot.

Ok well that price is ridiculous. As has been said try the insurance comparison sites with names drivers, different mileages etc. for example they don’t like people doing too few miles either. Also it is know that it is best value to buy it 3 weeks in advance.

I have seen very strange things happen with my own car insurance quotes in the past - it is an algorithm based thing so sometimes if all of the variables are favourable/unfavourable you can get very good/bad value quotes.

My son (17) passed his test in March. Used learners insurance to learn with as he was also learning with us in his own car (Renault Clio) which was fairly reasonable considering. We said we’d pay for his 1st years insurance expecting upwards of £2K. Did the comparison websites and ended up ringing the company with the cheapest quote because I didn’t believe the cost! Double checked through all the details on the phone and it was confirmed as all correct. Sons own 1st insurance policy fully comp, 8000 miles a year, parked on the road at night, me and his mum as named drivers and NO black box…..I had change out of £700! :o For info he is with Churchill

Just to say for those who mentioned Admiral.....
they have quoted him £6,626.38p and that is with me as a named driver. I have 15 years no claims bonus.

The car is only worth £2000.
It’s not the value of the car he’s driving. He could crash into a £100,000 car or hit a person or drive into a building.

One of the few areas of life were being older is good. It must be 20+ years ago that I sold motorcycle to a friend's son for £2k which, I'd been paying <£100 to fully comp insure but which James had to pay almost £3k third party only.

Ok thanks for that, I will give Churchill a ring tomorrow.

There’s a great broker in Barrowford? Called West Craven.

Give them a call and give them all your details and let them find you insurance instead of looking around yourself as they can usually find some great deals with their contacts,

Corsa wise, a 4 door is considered less risky than a 2 door it seems from when I passed a few years ago and obviously paying up front rather than monthly will knock off a few quid.

If you do find something through a comparison site, then make sure you use a cashback site and get £30/50 back for doing it that way - won’t seem like much but it’ll fill up the tank for him at least once for ‘free’.

Legalised theft is car insurance. 50% of premiums should be returned if no claim is made or renewal price should drop 50% until its down to manageable £2/300 a year.
