No worries, I'm sure we'll win our first home game, I mean, Waddle stop us?
Exciting Times.

My one lasting memory of that day is having to change the wheel in that ridiculous heatgawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 9:10 pmNo worries, I'm sure we'll win our first home game, I mean, Waddle stop us?

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets suffer opening day defeat at Watford
Remember the day well but not much of the game, my old stand out moment was Waddle pinging a long pass which looked to be going out for a throw in however he had put so much back spin on the ball it just stood up after bouncing, perfection, . was a wow moment, never seen such quality in the flesh (brought on div 4 football). Still think Waddle should have played more.
Didn't Huxford make his debut that red hot day?
Such was the excitement over Waddle's appointment we actually hired a car to get to the game. Same day of the Beckham goal at Selhurst.

Didn't realise that, can't remember him playing before the Watford game. Must have been one of those signings that went under the radar.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets suffer opening day defeat at Watford
I had recently moved to West London so it was a relatively short journey to Watford. I parked on the car park of an Irish club that was packed with Clarets and was met with the dulcet tones belting out "Who are ya". Yes, Rocky was there! I remember a massive following, absolutely boiling hot day and after the game a couple of Watford fans gesturing from the window of the pub that is behind what is now the away end. A Burnley fan walked forward and put his fist through the window, cue a load of police leaping on him. Not the smartest tool.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 9:18 pmMy one lasting memory of that day is having to change the wheel in that ridiculous heat
I was hoping the 1-0 defeat was a temporary set back and looking forward to Southend and Brentford away that were London friendly fixtures to look forward to....

I should have done. Stopped at the first services to wash my hands (and face, because I'd been wiping the sweat). Big sign apologising for there being no cold water in the loos, no warning that the hot water was scolding hot and you couldn't use it. Looks like it's going to be another warm one this week at Vicarage Road although at least it will be an evening kick off.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 6:58 amDid you sense at the time that it was a bad omen for the season?!

Not worried about the defeat.
We've probably watched the teams that will finish first and second.

Well that's 2 things I've now found out! It wasn't Huxford debut and Beckham didn't score against Wimbledon! How the mind plays tricks! It was very hot though and it was a red corsa.

The sense of anticipation before that game was very different to this season. We had just missed out on the play offs the year before, had not lost any major players and looked to have significantly strengthened. What could go wrong?

Let's hope it ends up very differently!!!
Took us two years, Stan arriving and Kilby's money to get over the damage done in the Waddle season. Even that nearly wasn't enough to save us in the first season.

There were no red corsas until the following year.

No, you have the team right, it was WImbledon. But it was on the opening day of 1996/97, not the Waddle season.

I remember :
1. How hot it was
2. Walking through allotments to get to the away end , at the opposite end of the ground to where we are put nowadays
4. A very big following of Clarets
5. The sheer weirdness of seeing Waddle in a Burney shirt for the first time
6. A massively disappointing performance
7. Watching Phil Eastwood and thinking "He's not good enough" !
